    Strange goings on

Strange things have been happening here recently. I think I've worked out what it is, but I just wanted to share and see if anyone has had something similar happen.

DD has been fully breastfed from birth. We still feed using the football/twin hold as it's the position I find easiest with my big boobs. Her attachement is generally good - these days she basically attaches herself.

Last week she did a poo that had some dark brown/blackish flecks through it. I had no idea what was going on. However then her next poos were normal, so I just put it down to one of the many mysteries of breastfed baby poo! Then a couple of days
ago it happened again, but then her poos started going a bit darker in general (still yellow but sort of brownish too, and still with the darker flecks). I was wondering what was going on. A quick google search led me to think it may be a bit of blood. I wasn't sure if that meant she'd got some blood when feeding from me, or if there was a problem in her actual tummy.

Then last night she was having her last feed before we went to bed. It hurt a little when she attached, but no worse than a lot of other times - (she attaches well for the most part, but I think both she and I have got a bit lazy with it recently). She's fallen asleep on the boob, and when she came off there was this big glob of blood-y something on my nipple - maybe about the size of a pea, or a bit smaller. As you can imagine, I freaked out. I had no idea what it was. It didn't really look like my nipple was damaged. I had no idea what it was or where it came from. I checked DD's mouth but couldn't see any blood or glob. However, her saliva while clear smelled like blood.

After talking with DH and him examining my nipple we decided that the blood glob must have come from my nipple.

Then this morning, as I sort of expected, DD's poo was very strange - it was black. I can only assume that she must have swallowed a lot of blood with last night's feed .

Since last night I have been really making sure she attaches properly, and now I'm kind of just waiting for her poos to go back to normal .

I guess the point of my post is to find out if this sounds like what is going on... and if anyone else has had anything like this happen to them.

Apart from the weird poos and one blood-y glob I've seen everything else is normal and DD seems fine - happy, eating, sleeping, etc.

I agree it sounds like blood, but I'm not sure why there would be blood without damage to your nipple. Have you tried expressing to see if your milk is bloody? If this were me I would be phoning the MCHN for advice, or maybe popping to the GP.

I'd get on to an LC for some medical advice just to make sure. The blood is either coming from you - your nipple or somewhere inside (don't even know how that might work) - or from her.

I think there has been some damage to the nipple - there is one small spot that is kind of 'open' like blood could come from there - but it's only very small.

I haven't tried expressing, but might now.

I have a MCHN appointment on Tuesday, so will definitely be mentioning it then.

I would go straight to a gp without passing go, that blood may not be coming from you. Please don't wait to take bub to a doctor.

I'll most likely take DD to doctors tomorrow to be on the safe side.

Have changed another nappy - poo still black. I expressed 120ml from the side that had the blood-y glob and there was no blood in the milk. After expressing I could see the damaged part of my nipple much easier though.

Hopefully it's just from your nipple, but it's definitely better to be sure about that. also hope your nipp le is ok

I have no idea, but definitely take her to the doc tomorrow just to make sure everything is ok. Summerhill is open on a Sunday. We'll reschedule our shopping trip

one of my SILs had her DS vomit after bf, and blood came out - turned out that it was from a smallish crack in her nipple.

but I'd get it checked out, for peace of mind.

    that all is well, sterla!

Oh S that sounds very worrying. I have no idea, I hope the gp can clear it up for you!

So her poo this morning was dark brown with a few whitish curds, not black like yesterday. Also had a yellow tinge when I was wiping her. Hopefully this means her poos are heading back to normal.

We're about to call that 24 hour parenting line for advice. Our GP is only on call today, but is then open from 5pm tonight so we might just go then, as apart from the weird poos DD is absolutely fine.

I called the 24 hour parent helpline and the woman I talked to told me that it was best to assume the worst and take her straight to emergency. So, DH and dropped DS with my parents and went in. It took ages to to even get to the front of the line, and then we got the impression that we certainly weren't classed as an emergency. We waited for an hour or so, then DD woke for a feed and nappy change. Her poos by then were definitely heading back to normal. We were in emergency for 2 hours and I think maybe two or three people were seen, and looking around there were plenty of people worse off, so we decided to leave after talking to the nurse we checked in with. She said because she's otherwise fine it was okay, and yes, we wouldn't be seen for a many many hours.
Since then DD's poos are basically back to normal - yellow again with just a few darker flecks. She is otherwise completely fine (as she has always been) - feeding fine, sleeping, happy when awake.

So, with all this in mind we may take her to the GP tomorrow when it's not such a hassle to get in - or if not then, I have a MCHN appointment Tuesday morning anyway.

I can only guess that she swallowed a lot of blood from my damaged nipple - but of course I can't know for sure.

I hate our hospital down here, it's way too busy cos of the problems you have just getting to see a GP!!!

Glad her poo is back to normal.

I hope that it's nothing, and that your GP can put your mind at ease - and get you seen promptly by an appropriate person, if further investigation is required.
