How Much Motilium to help milk supply??

Hi there - I have a five week old and had issues with supply first time round and i think again this time. My GP prescribed Motilium 10mg 3 x a day but I wonder if this is adequate? My GP was aware of the affect of Motilium on breast milk but didnt really prescribe much more than the recommended amount for someone with intestinal problems which is what it is primarliy for.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Yep, 60mg is an average for milk supply... but NEVER take an amount different to what the doc tells you!!!

There is a number.... I dont know it sorry.... to call a drug info line for b/feeding mums, and they can tell you a "safe" amount.

30mg is quite low, and I was able to take up to 90mg per day... so ask again!! My doc didnt know about it for milk supply either so rang another doc to get the info he needed!!

My LC told me that most Dr's will precribe 1 tablet 3 times a day but you can take up to 3 tablets 3 times a day.

When I left hospital I was only told 1 tablet 3 times a day to help my milk come in. Then a couple months later when i needed motillium again the LC told me to take 1 tablet 3 or 4 times a day. Thats been my experience, btu ive heard of others taking more. Maybe call the ABA to ask their opinion as well or an LC?

Motillium causes an increased rate of prolactin release, this is why it increases your milk supply, but you definately need to take more then the reccomended dose for nausea to see this effect and it will take a few days to see it. Like a previous poster has said, do not take more then the amount the doctor has prescribed until you see a doctor again. The only drug information line I know that should have information on the correct dosage to take to get the desired effect would be the line at king edward hospital in perth, though the ABA may know as well. Me too. For a few weeks. Only take what your GP has recommended you do. If it doesn't feel right to you, or you feel it's not making a huge difference, perhaps go back and ask some questions? let them know.

I also took Fenugreek with mine which helped immensely! (health food store).

    Good luck hun

When I was breastfeeding DS, I was also on 2 tablets 3 times a day and that was sufficient to boost my supply. Like Shanti, I also took fenugreek (2 capsules 3 times a day).
