Thrush

I've noticed today that my little man has a touch of thrush so i took him straight down to the Dr's and i was given a script for Daktarin, however when i went to the chemist the pharmicist was a little hesitant to give it to me as my baby is only 2 weeks old and said that because it is a gel he was worried that he would get too much of it and it would be too thick for him.So anyway he(pharmicist) phoned the Dr's and asked them about the liquid form Nilstat (i think it was called) but the Dr said no the gel is fine and just to use a tiny little bit on the end of my finger and rub it in really really well onto his tounge and also apply it to my nipples before a feed so my question is has anyone used Daktarin gel on a baby this young? And was there any issues with using it ?

we used by reccomendation when DD1 was newborn, but when i saw the health nurse she said not to use it get nilstat instead.from memory she said over 6 months for daktarin gel
DD2 they just gave me nilstat striaght away

oh p.s DD1 was fine using the gel

Thanks Skybie .... i'm kind of wishing i had got the Nilstat now as i know it is ok to use on a bub so young, but i guess if it was going to pose any danger to my little one they wouldnt have sold it too me - would they ?

I used Daktarin on my little one from 12 weeks old after many failed attempts with Nilstat.. I found Nilstat did nothing for my baby and it was awfully messy and sticky.. yes, the pharmacy will give you a very hard time about getting Daktarin however if you are sensible you will be fine. Just make sure that you spread the gel well over your finger first then spread in your babies mouth. you will be fine and the thrush will almost disappear on you - Daktarin works wonders, for me Nilstat did nothing at all..

hey westy....hope its all better by now... however i got daktarin recommended by a friend who had used it and she had it recommended to her also...
the reason it is not recommened to babies below six months is because it is meant to be a 'teaspoon' measurement after every feed and is therefore a choking hazard to any baby younger if you gave them that much...i have been using it for William and myself and havent' had any worries with him choking on it (rather he chokes more on breast milk because he is a guts!!)

p.s i used this within days from getting out of the hospital and am using it now and he is five weeks old

Hi westy,

I have used this in premature babies. We measured it in a syringe. Also it is a different antifungal drug to the one in nilstat, that might be the reason the doctor prescribed it as well. Hopefully it would have cleared up by now.

Hi Kirley..... how are you? Hope you and your little man are doing well - can't believe our babies are 5 weeks old already! Ryan has grown so much already and is a wonderful little bubba.
You said your still using the daktarin now is this because the thrush is still hanging about or has it come and gone? Ryan had it on his tounge and after a few days of the gel it cleared up, i then got a touch of it on my breast so i started using it again and it worked a treat it was gone a few days later.

muminalice, thanks for your reply it's good to know that daktarin is also used in much younger bubs (premmie) with no side effects. Things have all cleared up now
