I had my first Son in Feb 05 as an elective ceasar as he was breech, I had a great recovery and op. However, in the weeks leading up to my ceasar I was very upset over the prospect of surgery etc. I delayed having another bub, but im now due in July this year and my ob has popped me down for a 2nd elective ceasar, whilst I have weighed up the option of VBAC, the prospect of VBAC seems scarier to me, for the fear of the unknown and im worried i'd end up in a ceasar after labour etc.. But im still panicking about a 2nd ceasar.. how was other's 2nd ceasar experiences.. ? I have this fear of death that I just cant shake, which I know is probably an irrational fear as my ob says this is the least likely of all complications.. am I just being silly?
Honestly for me my 2nd ceasar was my best recovery of all. I had the least pain, was feeling myself the quickest. I had absolutely no problems at all with my 2nd.
I have just come out of my 3rd ceasar and it was a little harder on my body. I still have some tenderness now. But again no problems with it either. I've never had any infections or complications with them. It's normal to feel scared. I felt really scared with my 3rd one but there were no problems.
Don't give up entirely on the idea of a vbac though. I regret my decision to not try one with my 2nd. Mainly because recovery with 3 under 4 is hard work I'm sure everything will work out no matter which path you go.
My second c/s (elective) was the perfect outcome for me (considering the emerg one i had first time around).
I knew what to expect, only second time around I knew I'd be carrying my baby boy out into recovery on my chest - first time around i never had that opportunity.
I'm 38 wks now with number 3, and aiming for a VBA2C - did u know the end results for a successful VBAC vs VBA2C are fairly similar in Australia. If breech was the reason for your first c/s then you're in good steed to give a VBAC a crack.
I'll admit, I'm scared and excited about the prospect of a VBA2C as I've never been in labour before, nor had my waters break. Rest assured though, even to experience some part of labour is good for your body and your baby (and subsequent pg's if you're planning more kids in the future).
I've hired a doula for this birth, and she has taught me a lot about 'the hospital system' in my State, and birth itself. She posed the ever important question of 'you've gotta think "what are you willing, and not willing to trade off"? For me, worst case scenario is to not be concious for my bubs birth, eg - having to be rushed for an emerg c/s with no time to administer a spinal block hence, they would have to 'knock me out' for the c/section. That's worst case. But in saying that there are many tell tale signs of things going pear shaped eg, bleeding, fetal distress, my BP dropping etc - so I'll be watching out for those signs (as will my DH and doula, student midwife and hospital midwife) and should any of those compromises appear, I'd be seriously looking at ditching the VBA2C and opting for the c/section.
You've got to do your research, knowledge is power. Ob's will use many scare tactics.....(read my thread titled something along the lines of 'I just want a VBA2C', its a vent thread lol).
