    Registration Payment Help!

So we just got the rego for BOTH cars in the mail today and one is due a month earlier than it was last year! They're due in a couple of weeks and its way more than we can afford - its an entire fortnights pay plus some and they're due within 4 days of each other!

Does anyone know if Queensland Transport do payment arrangements or extensions?

vicroads offer 6 months of rego (not sure if it to all or just concession card holders) so definitely worth asking if qld have similar. i did 6 months so i could move the rego away from the car insurance bill that was due the same month.

For your next lot of payments, you can go to the post office and get a payment book, this will allow you to put money towards your rego throughout the year so it isn't such a bit payment when it comes time to paying it next time around.

Qld do 6 months of rego for all vehicles, the option is on your bill, which didn't come a few weeks before it is due I might add, they are sent out 6 weeks before your rego due date.

If you don't pay by the date, then you will get hit with an extra amount to pay.

They probably won't give you extensions.

in my state, the rego bill is sent out 6 weeks before it's due to. i save up for the annual bill, every fortnight, so that when it comes around, i have the money ready. A financial counsellor i saw years ago, advised me to do this (save up for annual bills, as they are a known thing, not a surprise, like an unexpected car repair). i am indebted to that person for that advice, it has taken some stress off me.

you get your annual bills, add 10% (to allow for inflation), divide by 26 - and that will tell you how much you need to save up each fortnight, in order to have enough for the annual bill, when it arrives. the best time to start doing it, is when you pay your current bill. i remember it was not easy at the start, but it got easier.

Yeah QT have a 6 month option, but we still can't afford it even if we pay both for 6 months - plus then it will be the same amount again at Christmas. We usually don't have two due at the same time but because we bought a new car turns out this year we do! We were going to pay one for a year, and one for 6 months then a year so they aren't due at the same time, but we didn't think it would be an issue having two due at once since both of them were supposed to be due in August, not July and we would have tax money

Can you just pay one rego and use one car for a month? The 6 month thing is good to be able to split them so you won't have both together next time.

Well I would but we would have to register DH's ute in that case because its technically not road worthy and we could never afford to bring it up to scratch anytime soon. Its also manual and I don't have a manual license and because DH has just had knee surgery I would be the one needing to drive.

I'm going to call them tomorrow and just ask if there's anything they can do or we can sort out - and question why the hell its due early! I've paid speeding tickets over time before, hopefully they can arrange something similar.

Sigh, its just one thing after another this month I'm so over it!

Worst comes to worst I guess we could get a parental loan from the bank of Dad but I don't think my parents are in the best position either right now...

You could do this, just check how late the payment can be before your rego will be completely cancelled and require a new roadworthy cert. to re-register. I know there's a grace period in Vic at least, but not sure how long

Yeah thats what I thought - I don't wanna pay for the same month twice! I'll look into the grace period too, even if its just 2 weeks it would give us enough time to get tax done and returned and afford it.

I hate it when I make budgets and then something throws a spanner in the works - our utilities all came late too so the last two pays we've had electricity and gas when I budgeted them for much earlier, but that had something to do with the cyclone and floods.

free rego for people with a pension card - that sounds like an urban myth.

for the OP, spiltting WHEN the rego is due again, sounds a good plan. Could you register one car for three months, the other car for six months?

have you rung the relevant department, to ask them about part payments, scheduled repayments etc. Financial counsellors have told me that utility companies are good about this (if you contact them BEFORE bill is due), so i hope the rego place is too (for your sake).

It's free in NSW - DP is on a disability pension card and the car is registered in her name, didn't cost anything last month when we registered it at the RTA.

If you let your car run out of rego even by 2 weeks it is still unregistered but you might get away with It would be best to call them and find out dont email them like I did about registration and got the email today after I already sold the car 2 weeks ago how dumb is qld transport

not sure how it works in other states but there is only a discount in Vic - they take the rego part off but you still pay compulsory third party (or they take the CPT and you pay the rego) - i'd check state by state what discounts are available

It's unregistered, but your registration is not cancelled immediately. There's a window where you can pay it late (but not drive it) without needing to get a new RWC
