This is a theoretical post.
To find out, what a person who is in this situation, would be eligible for from CL, to survive on.
- single parent
- two young children
- studying
- renting privately
I was thinking they might be eligible for the following:
- Parenting Payment
- Family tax a
- Family tax b
- rent assistance ( i think that would be part of family tax b )
- JETS scheme for help with childcare ( i don't know how much this is)
- educational assistance (i don't know how much this is)
anyone on BB in similar situation?
Jane Doe is trying to work out, if they left their partner, could they survive on their own (on CL, during final months of study). So obviously, to crunch the numbers, Jane Doe needs to know what she would be entitled to, under CL and FAO.
any experience or help with this, would be greatly appreciated.

When I was on my own with my older 2 kids and studying etc, I was entitled to and receiving everything you mentioned.
I had to be in full time study to be entitled to JET and the education money and from memory, full time study was around 25-30hrs a week. This was a loooooooooooooooong time ago though![]()
I am in that exact situation, single parent, 2 kids, studying, renting privately, & now working casually.
I'm a part time student, but was eligible for JET last year (before i had a job) because I had nursing prac , which took up many hours. I think you can claim JET for up to 2 consecutive years?
The education assistance is called the Pensioner Education supplement. It's about $60 per f/n for full time study.
If you are studying it's also worth checking out any scholarships or bursaries for low income students.
HTH, am writing this from my phone!
Sorry for the butt in Gigi -
Ambah - how do you do it girl?!?
And what is this JETS I keep hearing about?!?
Love MN ;-)
JETS is a scheme for people studying full time... to put your kiddies in childcare and you pay only 10-30c a hour instead of the regular 50% rebate i believe...
MN- I'm barely managing, just hanging in there by my teeth!
JET not only subsidizes childcare costs for study, but alsofor work and training. So if you worked PT and studied PT you may still be eligible? But your CCB percentage has to be at 100% to be eligible as well (which it most likely would be if you were on a parenting payment).

JET is jobs education and training childcare - it is additional subsidy on top of normal CCB for those on certain income support payments. essentially reduces fees to baout 10c per child per hour. for employment its for the first 13 weeks (i think), training and study have different timing limits ( for study i believe it's 104 weeks - and you can take a break over summer so those 104 weeks spread over more than 2 years)
Gigi - i think you've pretty much summed it up - don't forget that she will have to apply for mainenance (unless there is some sort of exemption in place) - something else to keep in mind
Hun did you know about the online calculators on the CL website?
thanks BG - i knew about lodging for Child Support - but my own experience of the CS payments being so unreliable, prolly coloured my thinking (hence, me leaving it off the list). I think of the CS payment as a lucky dip - if it turns up - i never know how much it's going to be - so i try to budget without factoring it in. It's a bonus if it happens. But that is just my experience. I hope Jane Doe has a better experience with CS payments. (all down to how the payer is, i suppose).
Ambah, thanks for the real life experience, and mentioning the Pensioner Education Supplement. Good to know it exists, and what it's called in CL jargon.

so now, my updated list of what Jane Doe could apply for, might look like:
- parenting payment
- family tax a
- family tax b including rent assistance
- pensioner education supplement
- JET scheme to help with childcare costs
- child support
I'm sure all these responses (and any more to come), will help Jane Doe assess her situation, thanks so much everyone for responding. I'm hoping Jane Doe will visit a CL office to get it "from the horse's mouth", to make it all seem a bit more real. i know all too well, you have to crunch the numbers, before you leave the sinking ship.
