Paid Parental Leave Question - When to claim to minimize tax withheld

    BG (or anyone!!)

When I am on maternity leave I am planning on claiming the Govt Paid Parental Leave payments, but leaving it until the end of my leave because with my Employers Maternity Leave, My Annual Leave and My Long Service Leave there will only be 14 weeks remaining that are unpaid.

So I figure if I claim the GPPL scheme for the last 4 weeks of my other entitlements + the last 14 unpaid weeks (18 weeks in total) I will be better off as this will mean for 14 of those 18 weeks the tax withheld will be less as there is no other income to push the tax withheld up - does that make sense?

Am I on the right track?

    TIA
    Naomi

yeah that's what i'd be doing
is there any way you can hold 4 weeks of your other leave (long service or rec) so that it doesn't overlap at all - and then use that for a family break when you've been back at work for a while? that's what i'd be doing. you just have to make sure its all completed before you go back to work, and before bub's first birthday.

I didn't think you could overlap? I didn't think you were allowed to??

I'd be doing it how BG suggested - use all the government entitlements, some work entitlements and keep any 'extra' work entitlements for future use (ie: LSL).

Im doing the same. Taking a months annual leave, work maternity leave at 1/2 pay then the government PPL so that nothing overlaps. I do have a small period where I wont be paid but I have already saved the $$ to cover mortgage/bills over those weeks.

I have LSL but decided to leave that alone so we can have a family holiday a little later on when bubs is a bit bigger.

There is no reason they can't overlap. The only thing you can't do us return to work before the 18 weeks is paid. And it has to be paid in full by bibs first birthday.

I did think of that but The GPPL is significantly less than my usual pay so if I only rely on the GPPL when I have other entitlements avail we'll struggle. Am thinking that while I'll lose extra in tax for those four weeks I am still getting more than the baby bonus so I am still ahead over all

ok, so why not take those 4 weeks of extra as half pay instead of full pay, so that it overlaps for 8 weeks...
