    What do I do?

I have just booked an appointment for DH to get his tax done (5 years!) I know I can't do my tax till he does his. So this may take quite a while. What do I do once out taxes are done? Do i need to call Centerlink and update our income estimate? Or does it automatically update when you do your taxes?
And is there anything else I need to do for Centerlink?

And one more question.....I worked, but have no tax to claim as I only worked a few weeks before EFY ended. Does this mean I don't have to do a tax return?

    Sorry for all the questions!

Not sure about the first lot of questions, but in relation to rhe few weeks you worked - the employer should have deducted some tax. If you have the payment summary it will show you how much that was. If you've only worked a few weeks in the fin year you should get all of that back, because the first few thousand you earn in any year isn't taxable. To get it back, you need to do a tax return.

    Re: What do I do?

Centrelink should have already asked you to update your income estimate prior to the start of the new financial year - usually they add $2K (or thereabouts) to your previous estimate and ask you to update if this is incorrect. Do you have an online account you can log in and check what your estimate is down as? Otherwise give them a call. They won't change the estimate based on the figure from your tax return.

I think if you are NOT lodging a tax return, then you can advise them of this (pretty sure this can be done on the online services too).

Have you received a payment summary/group certificate from your previous employer? If you have, it will show if any tax was with-held. You will get back any tax you have paid, as the tax free threshold is $18K I think.

    Re: What do I do?

I just called Centerlink to check (call back service is awesome ) My total tax witheld was 0 dollars because i only earned $1600. But I recieved PPL so that was taxed. Our income estimate was $90k combined and we will come in at not even half that. So can expect some $$ BUT tackling my DH taxes may take a couple of weeks and could result in a fine He has to drop in all the group certificates he can find to the accountant and they will do the rest.

I tried to do ETAX online 2 years ago and they wanted all of DH taxable income in order to submit mine. Does this sound right? I hadn't been receiving any Centerlink at all because I wasn't even pregnant yet.
