    Kindy - What age?

    Hi.
I'm just wondering what age you all sent your child(ren) to big school from preschool.

Thanks for your time and responses.

    Hi Tennykins,

I think it really depends on your child - for me, DD was 4, turning 5 that march. She was definately ready "socially" and already knew most of the stuff they taught inkindy, so she was fine.

Good luck with whatever you decide, it can be so hard !!

DD#1 will go to big school next year. She will be 5 yrs and 5 months.

Ive only just seen in the last few weeks that she is 'ready'. There is no way (In nsw anyway) that i could have sent her before 2009 anyway.....

    Thanks for your replies.

We're sending our DS next year. He turns 5 in Jan so it's all good. He's only done preschool just this year.
I've just heard a few other mothers from the preschool that have children the same age as my DS say they're thinking of keeping them back until they're 6.

I just was curious as to what everyone else did.

it depends which state you live kindy/pre-school are all different but for us been in melb the cut off date is April so if your child turns 4 before april 30th then he or she can go to kindy or you have the choice if your child is young to hold back, so I had a April baby he didnt go to kindy until he was 4 turning 5, all children born after the 30th of April have to be 4 turning 5

most other states the cut of is end of june so all kids will be 3 turning 4 for the 1st half of the year or 4 turning 5 for the 2nd half of the year

does any of that make sence?

Depends on which state you are in as the rules change from state to state. When does he turn 5?
NSW its 31st July for the cut off date.

there were a few kids in dd's class who were 6 they started.... IMO they should have gone the year before, personallly i think 6 is a bit late to start

    ...6 turning 7 that is.....

I didn't know it varied from state to state. I guess I never thought about it.

My DS turns 5 on 15th Jan. We're in NSW.
I think when I started kindy I was 5 turning 6 cause our birthday was in the middle of the year.

It's hard with birthdays at the start of the year, cause they're either going to be younger then others or older, depending on which way you go. (if that makes sense)

I am a teacher in NSW and unless he has some major problems I would send him next year, he is just the right age!

Many of the schools are having days to look at the school now so maybe check out your local school.

TENNYKINS ... My Mum started me in primary school when I had turned 5 on the 14th of Jan (well, that was many moon ago, LOL) ... and I can honestly say I feel I could have benefited from starting the year after

DP had turned 5 in March when he started primary school & he admitted he felt the same as I that his parents should have started him the year after. He said he noticed the 'difference' in learning to the older kids that their parents had started them later when he was in Secondary school & in University.

Our 2 year old daughter's b'day is early May, ... & fingers crossed we intend to start her ' the year after ' she turns 5.

I didn't go to Kinder ... BUT DP did.

We intend on sending out daughter to Kinder !!

BUT then she is our only child & I guess I would love to spend that extra year at home with her too (though that's not the sole or main reason for having her at home for that extra year) !!

Our only worry is that her lil best friend will be starting the year before her (she turns 5 in the March of that year).

Such a hard decision ... all the very best in what you choose to do TENNYKINS

(I know I will be crying buckets of tears on my lil one's 1st day of school )
