DD1 has preschool tomorrow. She woke up with a cold on sunday, and today she still has a bit of a runny nose and she's kind of lost her voice a bit. But otherwise I think shes back to normal energy wise, personality wise. She wants to go to school tomorrow.
But whats the general rule with colds and preschool??
Green snot and fever is a no go! Sorry TMI but that is what my childcare/kinder says, if they have a sniffle and feel well it's ok but green is a no-go zone! I sent my DD today with a bit of a cough and runny nose as well because she was happy to go, and I know they will call if she seems to be getting worse. She's at the end of a cold though and her coughs last weeks so I have to send her with a bit of it! HtH!
All the more TMI helps here. i may have to ask DH what sort of snot she has as I havent been near her in days (in fear of getting DD3 sick, which of course she is as of today )
But as usual I figure i should probably get up to date with whats a no go area with sickness when it comes to preschool!
Yeah green tends to mean an infection of some sort, so if it's just a general runny nose cold she should be fine. Most places have some info in their booklets too around gastro and colds etc. Good luck!! xoxo
I agree with Tan, but also...When I was working in childcare, we also used to have a rule that if they need their noses wiped by a carer (as in they're too little to wipe their own, or it too much snot for them to handle, lol) every 10mins, then they should stay home too. If she's coughing alot and spluttering her germs everywhere too (and spreading them around), then I would say keep her home one more day as well.
Personally I don't get the whole green snot thing because a cold is a cold you don't need green snot for it to be a cold, and personally I'd keep her home colds are spread so easily and I hate it when DD gets sick so keep the germs home I say.
True em but I know for my little ones, particularly my DD, if she gets a cold she can have a sniffly nose and cough for up to 6 weeks in mid-winter and I cannot keep her home for that time. SHe is essentially over it but has that lingering cough - having said that she can wipe her own nose and so can DS so as 3LM said, when they were younger they couldn't and I was home a lot more with them. You can check with your carers about what they feel is appropriate too - I am talking child care moreso than kinder here so might be different strokes for different folks.
Em, shes had the cold since sunday. Sunday and monday were the worst days, yesterday and today she still has a 'little sniffle' according to her. Shes wiped her nose a few times today, but she sounds really sick thanks to losing her voice!
She is the same as Tanstar's DD, she could still have a runny nose for a couple of weeks, but be fine in every other way. Thats why I ask. I cant stand it when parents send contagious kids to care, and I dont want to do that. But at the same time what is considered contagious?
Hard to know I guess but a cold is considered infectious until symptoms are gone. That's another reason they are so easily spread I guess. Sorry wasn't having a go at you just at the green snot thing because I've seen really sick kids without green snot. To be safe I'd give a cold a week and a half if just has residual symptoms and has shown rapid improvement.
What Tan says. Green snot and a fever keep them at home.
If you keep them home for every cold and sniffle they will barely go to school for the first year or two.
