Jaundice @ day 2 - Does it matter if its overcast?

LOL I wonder if my title made anyone scratch their heads...
But yeah, Mr #5 is looking yellow, midwife left about an hour ago after taking some blood to check his bilirubin levels. Will hear in about an hour the results.

but Im just wondering, he is by the window & has been pretty much all day. But its pretty overcast today. Would it still help? Being overcast & all.... I guess it would wouldn't it, I mean after all you can still get sunburn on a cloudy day....

I'm not sure if it will help, but it certainly won't hurt. Hopefully you get his bloods back fast so he can get phototherapy if he needs it xx

Yep still keep him near the window as there is still UV rays even on a cloudy day.

I hope his SBR is not too high requiring phototherapy.

She said anything 200 or below & she will be back in the morning to repeat. Less then 150 then she will back in the afternoon. So I guess if its more then 200 we will have to go back in... She will call around 5. So another 30 min or so & we will know.

Sorry hun, are those numbers meant to be the other way round? Is he feeding well, peeing well, pooing, and active when he is awake? It isn't common for a term baby to need phototherapy just so you know. :hugs:

This happened to DD. She had to be readmitted to hospital at 6 days for a couple of days under lights. Mind you, she was 3 1/2 weeks early...But when I look at pics of her she is soooo yellow. I didnt even seem to notice it much at the time.

I would definitely keep him by the window. Overcast or not, those UV rays are doing him good!

Maybe? I had the kids & the other nurse that was with her all talking at the same time, I was trying to follow best I could lol.

He is feeding well, But I am waking him, he is sleeping most the time & stirs every 2/3 hours but not really waking. I just see that he is stiring & get him up & feed him. I wont let him go more then 3 hours. BUT He has only wee'd 4 times since he was born. Only once in the last 24 hours & it was very concentrated & smelly. He is pooing ok, nearly into those BF baby poo's not the black poo anymore. But yeah, sleepy & not weeing & yellow.

It would be better to actually take him outside rather than just near a window.

The numbers are right, you want the BR number to be lower less than 150 would mean that you can have a longer span between tests, higher and repeat test sooner to see if they are rising or stabilising, if they are rising then he would go under lights.

Both of my girls were jaundiced, DD1 was under lights when she was born (BR well over 200) and almost again 10 weeks of age (BR was 162), DD2 we chose not to test in agreeance with the Paed as she was being breastfed and the same thing in the body that breaks down the breast milk works to reduce the BR level. So he just looked at how alert she was and how often she was feeding and that there was urine (never weighed urine), she was stopped putting on weight but he just gave her more time and she got there on her own.

But both girls were prem.

Hope the levels come back down. Ds was full term and had to go under the lights for 48 hours at day three.
