Temperatures- how long until you see a doctor?

My dd (2) has only ever had one bad temp, a few months ago, which turned out to be a kidney infection. We left it 48 hours before seeing a doctor and she was one very sick little girl by the time we got there.

This morning she's woken with a temp and vomitting (she seems to vomit with a temp). Still not complaining of any pain but I can't get panadol into her as she just brings everything up.

Im a bit paranoid after last time and would love to take her straight to the doctors but the reality is, the wont do anything when she only got the temp this morning right?

So how long would/do you wait?

the vomitting and not keeping anything down would worry me more than the temp. give nurse on call a ring.

I dring nurse on call and see what they say and also make a late arvo appointment at the drs which you can cancel if you dont need it

If you give panadol and it doesn't come down within an hour or two then take her to the Dr. If she is vomiting and can't keep down panadol then I'd take her in.

We rarely see a dr re fevers. As the saying goes, treat the child not the fever. If she is unwell and it's concerning you then it's time to see the dr.

Generally here we give it a day or two to see what's going to come of it. We don't give panadol unless they are clearly unwell and need it back down.. Ds vomits with fever sometimes, and dd gets terrible headaches if she gets over 39, so then I give them something for it.

Keep an eye on her behavior and fluid intake. Ringing health direct or nurse on call is a good idea.

She's complained that it hurts to wee so I've booked her in anyway. She went downhill quickly last time so I dare not risk it again. If they send us home with nothing at least I'll be able to sleep tonight! Thank you ladies x

When it comes to temperatures I tend not to use them as a guide to when I go to the drs instead I go when my child needs one or is showing signs of something brewing with or without a temp - does that make sense??

If they're not showing any other symptoms I tend to stay home and given nurofen. If nurofen doesn't bring it down I'll consider taking them to the dr then.

I think you've done the right thing taking her to the dr if she's complaining about that, hope all is ok!

Good job mum getting her to the dr. Hope she gets better soon. Nothing worse than your little one being sick - breaks your heart.

Glad you got on top of it early, hope the abtibiotics kick in soon and she feels better. Did she have an ultrasound of her kidneys last time? DD2 had a UTI as a little one and the GP treated it, but when we went to emergency for something else they said all children her age (18 months at the time) should have a Ultrasound even if they only get one UTI to check there are no renal problems. They may have changed practice now but maybe worth asking about if they havent if this her second UTI
