That looks brilliant!
You know what I think ;)
Goddess!
Awesome Netix! I haven't been game to tackle fondant icing!!!!
That is great, my friend tried doing Mcqueen and it looked nothing like that (tasted great though).
Thought I'd show you the cake I made for DDs birthday
But I can't work how to paste the link from my iPad...have a look in my albums it's the only photo in there.
Unfortunately no one got to eat the McQueen cake that I made... I was waiting for when both the Man and the boy were home at a decent time so we could do the whole candle and photo and eat thing. Stupid me. That was never going to happen! Then, moved house, so in to the bin
Yesterday was DD's birthday, and I only just managed to make ice cream cupcakes. I got to the point where I just felt like dumping them all in the bin because I had such a bad time with the icing. The butter was too soft and would not whip up properly, so I now have 450-odd grams of butter in the fridge, combined with two cups od sugar, to try and use for something else. I really really wanted to make french cream icing to pipe onto the tops of the cone-cakes to look like soft serve, which I was then going to dip into melted chocolate. Again,. Since the butter wouldn't whip up, I couldn't even make buttercream. Yet again,. I don't know if it was just because of the warm butter, or because I was also using a hand blender stick thing. Because we have just moved, I am yet to find my mixing bowls for the mixmaster. I think they are in the carport. So, yesterday, at 7am, I was colouring and rolling fondant to cover each cake (25 in all). Later while in Coles while looking for some extra cake decoration, I discovered icing in a can, like whipped cream. So, all the cakes got three piped swirls.
Oh yeah, I made them for all of DD's class, because now I don't even know if we can afford to give her a party.... Double
Oh, and I had three cakes left over from school, so I took them to the Man at work, for him , his boss, and coworker (perfect number!). Can you imagine three fellas, in their mechanic garb, eating these rather dainty little cone cakes?
i want a photo of the 3 mechanics eating them!
Lol, that would have made a great photo HotI! They were meant to get their photos taken for the local paper yesterday, that would have been even funnier.... Maybe I need to make some more!
Ooooo I forgot about this thread!
Here's a side pic of DS's Adventure time cake. Can't really see but there's princess bubblegum and the ice king in front.

I am sooooo proud of this cake. Had my first play with Tylose powder. Made things soooo much more easier!

Most recent cake...
Netix this was the cake in question (that I thought I was so clever with the insides... )
It's a Star Wars Angry Birds Cake.
It's black velvet cake with Chocolate flavoured fondant, with black chocolate ganache filling.
Everyone loved it. I can't wait to do my next red velvet chocolate cake with black dark chocolate ganache now. Yum! And pretty at the same time! Or purple velvet and black... Or black velvet and strawberry white chocolate ganache with red colouring.... Or green and black... It's endless.

That looks like all kinds of awesomeness Rouge!!
So cool Rouge!!! I am still scared of fondant.
Every time I see that cake I hear the Darth Vader music in my head and start humming it...
Thanks guys! Tan I was for a while trust me. My first cakes for the first 7 years were all buttercream. The first fondant cake I did was a Ben 10 omnitrix about 3 years ago. And it was a nit are to cover. Because I had t done it before. But now it's easy as. And I only ever use spreadable ganache under the fondant for flavour and because its so stable and firm.
Rouge, those combinations sound amazing!
So, pardon my ignorance (i feel silly even asking) but is velvet just chocolate with food coloring?
I am curious about the velvet combos too! I am scared of buttercream because I have only ever used fondant.
Yep. Pretty much. It's very light chocolate cake. To do with the rising agents. Originally it was red due to the type of cocoa used. Then people used beetroot. Now it's just plain ole food colouring!
You're all kinda of awesome Rouge. I'm scared to share cake decorating efforts in the same thread as you lol
It's nice to hear that you only used buttercream for a long time. There is hope that ill get over my absolute fear of fondant eventually! At the moment I'm a ganache only person lol
Very nice Rouge! To colour your fondant, do you only use, omg, brain fade :o gel/paste food colour?
I am supposed to be helping a friend decorate a Jake and the Neverland Pirates cake this week. That should be fun!
Train cake I made for DS 5th birthday

Hey Netix yep gel to colour. Again the americolour is best. Most people I know use their KA mixer dough hook to knead in colour. I tend to do both. And I do ziplock bags for small batches.
Love the train. Very cute!
That is a very cool train!
Rouge; I had a brain fade and couldn't remember if the colours were a gel or paste. I didn't end up getting any from the cake shop when I was in Melbourne! I don't have a KA, or a machine with a dough hook. :( I need to don gloves! ;) Ziplock bags, what a great idea! I will be using that idea this week at least!
Netix if you can get some Tylose powder for fiddly things. I bought some on march and its a godsend. It turns the fondant into gumpaste which means when doing characters and finely rolled fondant (for 2D decorations etc it doesn't tear or melt in your hands). I add more or less depending what I want to do with it. The more you add the harder it will dry.
I did the black fondant by hand and I didn't have any gloves. My hands were PRETTY! Also for bolder colours it's recommended to colour the fondant a few days before so the colours can intensify and set. And with Wilton colours you need to build up with some colours to make them pop. For example for black fondant you do it blue, then purple, then black. Where as with americolor you only need the colour you want it to be.
Thanks for the tips Rouge! Most appreciated. It's just been organised that Thursday is cake day. We'll be using ordinary food colour, should I het my friend to make up the coloured fondant tonight/tomorrow?
I'd say that's a good idea. If you aren't wanting really bold colours it should be fine either way.
Here is the Jake and the Neverland Pirates cake I decorated for my friend. She made a chequerboard cake (red, blue, green), three layers, and I put the same blue Vienna cream in between the layers as I used for the piping. My friend said the cake "made her day". Which made me super happy. :)
that looks fabulous!
Fantastic!
