Circumcision

Hi ladies,

Not sure if this is the right place to post - sorry if it is.

I have just found out I'm having a boy and wanted to know about the circumcision (which DF and I would like to happen) - but i've heard some places won't do this after the birth and we'd have to book DS in for another appointment a few mths down the track.

Can anyone shed any further information about this? If it helps DS will be born at the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital.

when i thought dd was a boy, i rang the hospital where i was giving birth and found out if they done them, and i also rang my gp to find out if he does them. It turned out that the hospital didnt do them, but my gp did.

so maybe ringing around and see what they say

but be prepared for some questions and not so nice comments, alot of people dont like them these days, but hey its your baby and your family and your beliefs (sp?)

if i am ever lucky enough to fall pregnant again and i have a boy i will be getting him done.

Congrats on finding out you are having a boy

We found out at our 12 weeks scan that we are also having a blue one and I immediately started researching how circumcision is conducted in Australia (I am from South Africa) because DH and I both feel really strongly about getting it done.

I spoke to my OB and he said that they do not perform circumcisions at hospitals (I am in QLD and can only tell you how it works here) and that you have to have it done privately, elsewhere. I also got told that it was really frowned upon by the paediatric medical community blah blah. So, as mummy2chloe said, expect frowns, judgemental responses and preaching from many!

Firstly I would decide on the manner in which you would like him circumcised i.e. the full-on cut and stitch or the "Plastibell" technique (we are opting for the latter). Once you have researched and worked that out, I would say that the best thing to do it to ask you OB or GP for further advice and the name of a specialist operating in Adelaide.

With regards to waiting "a couple of months", when I called our specialist they were talking about "weeks" and said that the the sooner that we could have it done the better. So again, I would get some names and call around and try and get the little tyke "done" as soon as possible after the birth.

Ask at the hospital first. Most public hospitals dont do them but they maybe bale to give you a list of private OBs who do.

I had alot of issues finding ANYONE to help me with info at the hospital i went to. I ended up phoning a peadiactric surgeon who did the procedure but not til 12 months. There is a few other methods that can be done ASAP. I would research early. Also like mentioned above expect lots of comments. GL.

Definitely ask around, but be prepared for alot of negative attitudes and refusal to help by some people. When we had our son, the midwives and hospital staff were very unhelpful. they just kept putting me off - (often just saying "well, if you really want that done there is plenty of time for that later"). It was very frustrating. In the end we just rang around the various dr surgeries and pead. surgeons in Canberra to find someone. We only just managed to get DS in on time as the dr who does them here only does them on boys under 1mth.

Definitely research before you have bubs - no matter what lines people feed you about 'there is plenty of time'. We are having another boy and are going to book him in for two or three weeks after his EDD, so that we know we get him in.
