Any advice on prefolds for a newborn?

Hi there,

I know this question must get asked a lot, but what would people advise as a cloth nappy for a newborn?

I've read that prefolds are a good option- and this seems to make sense to me as I bought a couple of AIO's and it does look like this would be an expensive item if you had to buy enough to use exclusively, and then bub would grow out of them! The OSFA look huge for a newborn too!

I found some info on Bambino mio- prefold with a cover. Has anyone used these?? What other brands are good for prefolds and in reality how many did you need. Am hoping these are husband compatible...

Also was a bit confused by the nappy bin and laundry bag on the website- what is the laundry bag for??

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm scared of spending loads of money and then it being the wrong thing!

I didn't use that specific brand, but I would think prefolds are basically all the same. Bamboo ones are more absorbent, but you don't really have to worry about that with newborns cos you change them so often.

I think I have about 16 lined up for the next bub, but I have lots of fitteds and AIO's too.

I'm confused about the laundry bag - unless its a wet bag you are talking about? I have 3 wetbags for going out and about, and I have 3 nappy buckets for 2 in cloth full time.

I love my prefolds and highly recommend them to people!

Prefolds are great for a newborn, as long as you have a good cover. I like the motherease rikki covers for my prefolds.
How many do you need... If you are looking at 8-10 nappy changes a day, and washing every second day then I think a min of two doz is a good number in case you miss a wash... And remember you can use the prefolds later for stuffing in pocket nappys.
And you can get them ready in the cover for DH, so all he has to do is pop them on.

Thanks! Very good advice. Just read the website properly about the bag- apparently fits inside the nappy bucket and then you throw the whole bag in the wash (it's netting) to "avoid rehandling" - sounds good to me!!

Think I will give these a go.

Would you use something different for nightime or just boost up the same covers and prefolds??

Although I love the AIO's this seems like a more econimocal option!

I used prefolds until she started sleeping for longer than 3 hours in one go - then it just wasn't absorbent enough so put her in a nappy for those sleeps I knew was going to be longer - IYKWIM?

I agree with Arimeh. With my DS he was in about a 3-4hr routine 24hrs a day, so had very regular nappy changes when he was newborn. I did have some little booster strips that I made that I could put in for extra absorbency. But I really didn't use them after the first few times...
