So for someone who doesn't need any more nappies I've just bought.... guess what... new nappies. :rolleyes: There was a very funky black and white dancing skeletons GK Funtimes second on ozebaby, and just to make the postage worthwhile, I got another Anytimes which will probably end up being used as a night nappy. And I won a very cheap Snoozywun of B4B, which will come in handy because...
...as of last night, E is finally back in cloth at night. Woo hoo. And he only woke once, although this is normal this week because he's got another molar coming through. I've decided to mostly use AIOs & pockets rather than fitteds, and used a GK last night which went really well. Although I may have to pop him back in a sposie tonight, he's got a couple of spots of NR which were almost healed and have flared up again. So we're back to Sudocream and a liner - I hate the stuff but it's the only thing that works on NR for E, who seems to react to moogoo. I use pawpaw for everyday, but it doesn't do squat if he's actually rashy. Neither does bepanthen. Dunno what else I can try that doesn't need a liner, I've got a great calendula ointment but because it's a lanolin base it's even harder to get off nappies than sudocream. Any ideas?
eej - I have an Isoki bag - it's awesome for cloth because it's huge (and it has a brilliant pouch which is great if you want to leave the bag in the car and just grab the change pouch). But if you are a babywearer, it's not a good carrying bag. Even if you're not, it's a bag best slung onto a pram, because it's big and heavy, especially once laden with stuff. Just make sure that you have a baby or a large brick as a counterbalance if you attach it to a pram. But it's a fabbo bag.

I'd love to do it again - lil Jack is soooooo gorgeous and that nappy that was on his butt well... it paled in comparison to him but it was just HOT!!!!! yes, gf's - seeing os believing isnt it? Thought I would come introduce myself as I am starting MCN's in the next couple of months with DS and will with our next one once s/he is born. It was all so confusing at first but I am slowly understanding it all. Just a quick question though and your opinions....For DS who is now 18 months old almost and is no where near TTing...he is absolutely petrofied(sp?) of the toilet...how many nappies do you suggest that I get for him?? Based on washing ever second day. With sposies at the moment he is going through a average of a minimum of 6 nappies a day.

I think at around 18 months DS was going through about 7 nappies a day - 6 through the day and one at night. I wash every second day, and because I dry most of mine inside - they take two days to dry.
So I'm not a good one to ask how many you need - cos I have wayyyyyyyy too many.. LOL
Ok my question goes out to the Townsville mums mostly - do you find that your nappies,but mostly inserts/boosters, dry hard in the townsville sun? I love that my clothes are dry 10 minutes after hanging them out, but it's making my boosters stiff and not very nice to touch.
I love the sun for the smell and stain eliminating factor, so I don't really want to move them into the shade or inside. Isthere smething else I can do? I know we can't use softner and I follow all cleaning recommendations for them.
Maz - which auriels did you receive today? Are they purrrrrrfect? Our courier service here is fantastic, brings things to my front door even though our house is set back from the road and he has to find his way through our 6ft fence avoiding the dog. AP however often leave my packages out the front of the gate where I can't see them and we have PLENTY of passersby who could easily snatch them, OR throws them over the fence. Yes... throws them.
Kitt3n - I'm very jealous of your babylegs. I had been randomly checking IB all morning, then I saw your post about the sale on babylegs and headed straight there. By the time I'd reached the page they were back to full price. GRRR. Enjoy them, the soft ones are so lush!

I just had DF reading over my shoulder "What's MCN short for, what about OBV, WOHB, IB, BBH, DS, DF...etc." After giving him explanations of what seemed like a thousand abbreviations for nappy related things he looks up at me and says "what the hell is a fluff shop!?" I could only imagine what he was thinking it was....
Mel - Well my plan is to have at least 50 by the time bub is born in September. If not more.....I feel like I am already addicted but yet don't have any till we arrive back in Brisbane.
CM - when I can do it, I put my nappies on the line till they are almost dry and then in the dryer for 10 minutes to finish them off. Hasn't been done for a while because of my pelvis though.
MMM - most of my stash are OSFM, and I have about 20 NB/Small sized. In total I have about 80 and I will have 2.5 in cloth in June.
CM - most nappies will go stiff in the sun, its the speed of drying. So you could either hang them out at night or just do what I do - scrunch them when I pull them off the line :D

Aurials here too! Ari loves hers and again wanted it on ASAP - so sad the snap came off our new puppy pocket so have to visit Sam for the snap press on the weekend. Ari is carrying her nappy around, trying to put it on herself.
CM - yep have the same thing here, I hand mine out at night and then bring them in as soon as they dry in the morning (about 10am by the time the sun gets the dew out of them but they doo seem softer) or alas lots of time they go in the dryer - I know very environmentaly unsound.

just a quick question. my nappies still have a slight wee smell after i wash them(and he hasnt even pooped in one yet :( )....
at the moment i wash them with hot water and cold rinse on a long cycle and then pop them in the warm dryer(not very enviromentally friendly i know but still better than sposies) as we have had a fairly wet week. am i doing it completely wrong?? should i be giving them a quick rinse in the laundry tub before i wash them? does the sun actually get smells out aswell or is it just stains?

what is WOHB and other similar terms??
i know WOHB is 'whats on his butt', but what do the other ones mean?
Kate: Just be careful which nappies you wash hot - there are several that shouldnt be washed that hot. It will deteriorate them very quickly, or shrink them!
Try adding a drop or two of lavender or eucalyptus oil to the rinse.
If you have any sun, hang them in it, then put them in the dryer to finish them off :)
Most of the other abbreviations are nappy names...IB itti bitti, WC Wild Child, BBH baby beehinds hemp...etc

WOEB is what's on Em's butt. Is that what you were meaning Kate? For people with more than 1 in nappies they replace the H with the child's initial. Most of my posts only have E but some have S too.
The sun will sometimes help with the smell, otherwise a strip wash is likely to be needed. They are in the care section.
i have only got cushie tushies. are they ok to wash on hot?? and the cushie tushies i have are only a week old :( maybe i am not washing them fast enough once they come off his bum. i took it off him after an overnight stint and washed it the next morning. so it was 24hours before i washed it. i should probably mention i didnt dry pail it i just had it near my washing pile... does it make a difference?

For what its worth, I wash very second day, so I dont think that really makes a huge difference. Certainly putting them in a pail or not doesnt make a difference that I have noticed.
Best thing I have found for smelly nappies is about a teaspoon or so of bicarb soda and no washing powder - does the trick. I only wash cold unless I am doing a strip wash and I wet pail - I am such a black sheep here :-) I sometimes found when Ari was teething that her nappies would be smellier than other times

Sun, bicarb, and stripwash are the best things for smelly nappies. Boys also have stronger Pheromones than girls so they are likely to get smelly a bit faster with boys. Try popping some bicarb in the bucket if you are leaving them for a few days and hang outside whenever possible. I find they smell a bit faster when they only go in the dryer. They can handle up to 60 degrees wash which is higher than what most HWS go to nowadays. and low in the dryer. How many prewashes did you do Kate? I find that if I have only done 1 or not prewashed :redface: they get a bit smelly because if the manufacturing process, because the microfleece hasn't fully washed in, and the bamboo needs to get a little more absorbency.
I reckon try the sun and bicarb and if no success then strip wash.

Limey - out of curiosity, what nappies have you had problems with when washing in hot? I always wash in hot at 60 degrees - have done so now for a couple of months - all of my nappies are fine so far but degradation in the long term is my concern. The washing instructions on all of them say that hot washing is OK, I used to wash at 30 degrees (my machine won't do a cold wash on a normal cycle, only on handwash, grrr), but since I've been hot washing my nappies are no longer coming out smelly, E's nappy rash has improved heaps, and the degradation of my bamboo has stopped. Even the ones that already had some degradation have not got any worse (although I'm no longer using the worst culprits, my bamboozles, as they leave lint on everything).
Kate, I rinse all nappies before pailing, I find that this helps too (with both the smell and the degradation). Night nappies are rinsed especially thoroughly. Using less detergent may help too, if you are using too much and it is not rinsed properly, the residue can cause nappies to smell.

on the nappy bin front...we dont have one with a lid...I bought a kitchen bin with a shivel lid...do when I can throw the nappy at the lid if falls in. Also makes it easier when I wash them :)

Thanks for all of your advice about my stiff nappies ladies, I thought it was something to do with them drying so fast, DUH. I hung some out last night and I'm just bout to go bring them in now before the sun gets too hot. I'll let you know how they are.
Misskate - I have a boy and his wee is the stinkiest I've ever smelt. I find that no matter how I wash my nappies whether it's hot/cold more/less detergent etc. It never makes a difference. After I pull them out of the washing machine, even after 3 washes once because I was so annoyed at the smell, they STILL smell. But after a few hours in full sun outside, there is absolutely no smell in them at all. The sun works wonders.
I'm interested to know what nappies can't be washed on hot? Can anyone give me some examples? I'm thinking anything with bling as it would possibly melt the glue. But velour, minky, fleece etc all seem pretty heat tolerable to me?

Hey guys Im flying out to Brissy/ Redcliffe tomorrow and I wanna keep DS in cloth. Ill be there 2 to 3 weeks so how many nappies should I take? And I only have 3 small wetbags is that enough?

rhyb - depends on your washing facilities where you're staying. I took about 24 pockets and AI2s and some night nappies for a 3 week trip and it was too much, washing every 2nd day. Same, 3 wet bags to put them in. I vacuum packed them to take up less space in my luggage too, but made sure I had access to a vacuum cleaner when coming home too!

Hmm, I think I introduced the talk of gastro into the thread a while back. Well I had it for 2 weeks, and finally got rid of it. Today, DS has it :( After disinfecting the house from top to bottom all day, lots of hot washes in the washing machine etc. I now have it back :(

I bought my new washing machine yesterday and its comeing on Tuesday so the pre-washing extravaganze will begin. Just as we start to get really Autumn weather but ah well.
I also thought up a pile of questions while we were off the air, and do you think I wrote them down? :(
This is what I can think of now but not sure if it was all of them.
Can PUL go in the dryer - so things with hidden layers of PUL etc?
Are there any types of nappy fabrics that I should avoid washing together - even in seperate laundry bags?
What sort of cycle do you wash/spin them on - esp for anyone with starbunz pockets/covers, do these have to be washed on gentle - I dont want the puppies ears to fall off!
