Willow - Swaddlebees are very narrow in the crotch. They dont suit my kids at all, yet they are perfect for Bilby. I would buy 1 or 2 to see if they suit but if bubs is a wide crotch bub then they wont suit.

Alioops, i found one exception to that, the OSFA Swaddlebees are a wide crotch style, but all their other nappy styles, are narrow crotch.

swaddlebees make SO many different nappies, it's mind boggling!

• sized fitteds
• sized fitted pockets
• sized PUL pockets with microfleece inner
• sized PUL pockets with organic velour inner
• sized PUL AIO hybrids

(the above are all narrow crotch)

• OSFA PUL gronappi (and a mini gronappi)

(the only wide crotch thing they make)

• swaddlebees wool covers
• swaddlebees pul covers
• swaddlebees fleecy wraps
• they make prefolds, pocket inserts, etc

and there is MORE but i'm sure you get the drift!!

I guess i like the flush inners like with pockets.

DD and DS are having solid poos now so not a huge issue with runny poo but like with BBH - having to un snap and squirt so many sides.

Perhaps i should go back to pockets then..

yep, she who donnae like unsnapping boosters, is best served by pocket nappies. you still gotta fish the insert out, but usually only have to squirt ONE thing (the pocket inner).

go forth and buy pocket nappies, i beseech you oh Pink One and you will be less LS challenged!

Hi Everybody

Haven't posted in here for a while but I just wanted to share my news - I just got my first fluff!!! We have a store on the other side of the city (1.5 hr drive away) that mum, DD and I went to today to try out all the nappies and covers and everything. We had a ball and even got to see the shop assistants bubs get changed and what a MCN look like putting on!

So in the end, cause I can't decide what I want, we got 4 'real nappies' covers - small, 3 babybeehind hemp nappies AIO / OSFM, 2 parents and pumpinks PUL nappies and one parents and pumpkins night nappie. I have been given a stack of prefold nappies that I'll be using with the covers but I think I might now need to get some boosters.

From experienced MCN'ers how does that sound for a start? I'm going to be half disposable and half cloth to begin with so DH learns and then we'll be getting more as we become better using them. Is there anything else I need to get? I'm getting a nappy bucket tomorrow and I have to get a used nappy bag yet, but anything else?

to prepare for a newborn, i would also suggest

- half a metre of MICROPOLARFLEECE (brand is called Little Additions) at your nearest spotlight, should be under $10 easily. Cut it up into 10 x 30cm strips to be stay dry liners for inside your bub's prefolds.

- one or two wetbags, to store used nappies in, when you're out of the house, the baby beehinds one is very economical, good size too and surprisingly for the cost, uses very good quality materials. just not the funkiest looking one (plain purple). that didn't bother me though.

- one or two newborn sized covers with leg gussets, they are made especially to use with prefolds and are great for pootainment of the nb explosive poops. I got mine from Nature's Cradle, but they no longer stock them (bambino mio), imse vimse, bummibrites (nc might have those in nb size), thirsties, motherease (NC used to stock these, get the RIKKI one, not the AIRFLOW).

- a dozen bamboo foldups/trifolds/prefolds - different brands call them the different names, bascially, two layers of bamboo, 30 x 30cm, fold it into three, place that into nb sized cover. (i laid inside, a microfleece liner too, to catch the worst of the poop).

examples are:
the peapods bamboo inserts (at nature's cradle)
the cushie tushie bamboo trifolds (also at NC)
the baby beehinds bamboo foldups
the bamboo prefolds at booroi

these will be THE nappy for your bub at nb stage
at other stages, they will become
- inserts for your pocket nappies
- extra boosting for night nappies
so useful to have in your stash, all the way to toilet training.

in your city is also another shop, called Rainbow Tree, that sells mcn stuff.

- a little squirt, to rinse the poop off each nappy.

- a pair of newborn sized flongies, as you're going to have a nb in winter. twins in cloth on ozebaby site, or bizybee on the wahmnaps site has nb flongies reduced right now. they wash in the machine, dry so quick too. flongies are both a nappy cover AND either trousers (day) or pj pants (night).

- a nappy free time mat, so your baby can kick around with a naked bottom each day, without ruining your carpet etc. sometimes these are sold as mattress protectors e.g the swaddlebees one at nature's cradle.

it's good you got a few options to try out on your nb.

be aware if you are using cloth AND disposables simulataneously, they are two VERY different styles of nappying.

e.g you CAN leave a sposie on your bub for four hours no worries
it is advisable to change a nb in cloth, much more frequently. we did "as needed", not by the clock, that is a very good way to avoid nappy rash too. When you know you're going to be using those nappies again (when they're clean), there is more incentive to change them more often, as you're not worried about wasting money (another sposie in the bin).

it's also alot easier to be aware of your baby's output, which is useful if you have any medical problems with the bub, when you're using MCN.

i know how far Gawler is from NC, quite a hike isn't it?

i worked out by the time i spent the petrol money, buying online (and paying flat postage fee) to nappy sites, was actually economical.

have a look at some of the bigger nappy sites, like nurturenappies, the weewuns, darlingsdownunder, babysoftlandings, ozbabytrends, babyblossom, the list is so long!

and don't forget 2nd hand mcn sites, like buy for baby, trading rooms on forums, nappy chic, monkey's undies. (yeh, wot a name!!!).

if you DO happen to go back to NC, i'd highly recommend the Gadimals pockets in small, for when your bub gets past the nb stage. excellent product and they don't have many left, but i did see some in small size.

also the NC hemp healing balm, is a magic potion for nappy rash, get the little jar of that stuff, it's excellent. no other shops seem to sell it.

Oh my goodness Gigi - I'm going to print out your post so that I can go though the ideas one by one - they are brilliant! Thank you so much for your help. I was looking at boosters and wasn't sure which ones to get, but I know I can get the peapod ones very locally so I'll head down there and grab them.

Hey hun - although I am still only relatively new - I am totally in love with Ecobubs ..... plenty of room for a booster as well if you want to get more out of them .... and Greenkids seems to fit well and have been foolproof as well so far - hope that helps in some way :)

PP - If the BumG's suit then Baby Kanga's might be ok. I also have Mommy's Touch. The new Magicalls are a hybrid pocket/aio. I am going to try an Ecobubs when Leah arrives, it is in the suitcase now.

Ryatha - The peapods bamboo boosters are great, I just dont think very highly of the pockets. I have a few of the boosters and 1 of the pockets, and the boosters are a really good size to allow for different shaped pockets.

Ali, we don't have any ceiling fans here and our stand alone fan got eaten by DPs parrot (well the cords did anyway lol) but I do feel better knowing that I can do 'quick' drys for the prewashes rather than all line dries!

Well...we are home....
cloth whilst on holidays is easy peasy!!!! Was thinking i would have a complete meltdown and end up buying sposies...BUT nope...was soo easy :)

Met the ever gorgeous purple haired maz :p and got fluf in person :D was ever soo exciting...hubby was even bursting when i got back to check out the new NN!!!!

I was going back to the hotel to put Jack to sleep as he just would NOT settle for DH and (this was arounf 9pm) then was going to go back to bowling...hah! do you think he would go to sleep?? not on your life...... he is not well...so did not sleep til near 12.30pm :( so didn't even get to say bye to maz...and didn't get to go bowling :(
Although dinner was gorgeous..and the company well worth the trip :)

Ok - went to spotlight today and got:
The micro polar fleece as suggested (DH wanted me to get the brown one so the poos aren't as noticeable!) and while I was there I thought why dont I get some flanellete and terry towling and make some of my own wipes... So the next few days are going to be busy sewing!

I've also ordered a pair of flongies - on special, and a wetbag, also on special!

Next on my list is to go get some of the bamboo foldups/trifolds and prefolds... I think I have some that were given to me but I don't know what they are made of, will need to find out.

Alioops - Where do you get ecobubs? I've searched around and not found them anywhere...

That would be a prefold? size has me confused cos i think mine are around 30 x 30 though.

Ryatha - I think Mel has them, unless I have the name wrong and it is ecobots? They are the ones with the wool outer and the pocket opening at the front, just to confuse us.

Fluff - Oh NO on not getting to spend more time with Maz!!! But WOOHOOO on holidays with cloth being easy!!! We are thinking about sometime when our bills are in order using some of DH's AL for a trip to Cairns, and if we do we would stay at a caravan park that has laundry facilities, or rent a holiday house for the weekend or something. I think I would find it a bit easier than when we are headed south because my Mum has a small machine and Dad is a bit thingy about poo in the machine, even though I rinse it all.

Katie - My newborn Booroi prefolds are about 34cm x 30cm. I suspect the size you have been given is a larger size.

I have cotton prefolds for my newborn, will these be enough or should I get some bamboo or hemp boosters as well?

I also just read something that suggested a bit of time in the tumble dryer will give leaking PUL's a bit more water proofing. Has anyone heard this or tried it? I have been given some NB covers that got soaked in nappisan and leak a bit so it is worth trying I think. Let me know if this is a very silly idea.

Ryatha- I have read that bamboo is 60% more absorbent than cotton and I love the softness of bamboo compared to cotton, which is why I am looking at bamboo ones to get. My DD currently wears one of her (clean) BBH bamboo fitted nappies on her head during the day and takes it into bed with her at night- she loves the feel of it that much!

I have checked the Booroi site and prefolds some in:
34x34cm
40x40cm
37x53cm (which is the one that I must have)
What size would be the best to buy for a n/b if I wanted a dozen? Six of 34 and six of 40? And do they just get folded in half or thirds then placed into the cover? No Snappies? No wrapping around the waist?
