Hun you don't have to dry between prewashes :)
Depending on the nappy and the layers sewn into the nappy AND the weather it can vary. In hot weather I can hang on the line and they will all be done in a day. Now it's cold it can take up to 3 days for them to dry. So these days, unless the sun is shining they all go in the drier on warm.
Love your new photo Maz! So gorgeous! And ... you know what I'm about to do don't you love .. what we talked about at the steakhouse. Or I talked :D
Rytha - yes, boosters take longer than pockets. Pockets are usually a layer of PUL and a layer of Polar / microfleece. Once the actual PUL is dry (and the longest part to dry that is the beads of water on the PUL plastic side) then they are right to go - that may only take an hour! Boosters though, well other than microfibre may be 4-6 layers of bamboo / flanno / hemp and may take up to 2 days ... I always have twice as many boosters as pockets ready to go!
Maz babe - I understand - you know that
I don't think I dried during my prewashes either - can't remember to be honest!! I don't do more than one prewash anymore, just don't leave it on them as long.. hehe... but usually its something that I've been waiting on and just HAVE to put it on them there and then
What else was I going to say? bahhh its gone.
ryatha - I'm glad the photos help.
next questions -
1) how many pre-washes should I be doing ? - I have a variety of pockets/ AIOs/AI2s of a variety of "brands". SOme are bamboo others aren't.
2) for my first wash I just did warm water (hot water system was set to 39 deg). Should I do another wash with some sort of detergent (I know it should be only a little if I do) or a strip wash for each of the nappies?
Thanks girls for the info re the pre-washes, I've done 3-4 washes now so I've given up, put them all back together and now have my nappy shelves all organised. mmmm might need to get more boosters...
I've been trying to teach DH how to use the MCN's (not that it is hard) but his reply is 'as if you'll let me near the MCN's til you have played with them for a few days' he is so right! of course until i get sick of messy NB poo!
If they are new, you're washing the synthetics to remove nasty chemicals. Half your usual detergent is fine (but not lux flakes or other pure soap) or just bi-carb. Don't use any fabric softeners or vinegar in the wash.
For the flanno / bamboo / hemp, the 4-6 prewashes are to get absorbancy. And I reckon DO dry between them .. what you're wanting to do is relax the fibre and make it a bit fluffy if possible. But having said that, I just prewash once and then only put it on Pip for an hour :)
me
Tired.... sore throat ... and a sore boob, so I hope it is not the beginning of something yuck by tomorrow morning :( must shop online to make me feel better
For some reason we did Ittis all day today - i really trust them for up to 3 hours now and cos we were out and about - thats what we grabbed!
supposed to rain here tomorrow so have 2 clothes airers with actual clothes on them (hehehe) and 1 full of nappies and boosters etc ....
Bubblebubs - are they overrated a bit? I only have one, but am still very much undecided ....
I loved pulling my wetbag out today, so pretty - cant remember what brand it is - aqua with brown swirls - Kitt3n might know cos she enabled me in the first place saying that it was so nice (brand) - and too lazy to walk to laundry and see .... but preeeety :)
Kazbah - are you able to tumble dry the bamboo/hemp warm or do you have to use cool? And is bi-carb ok for the nappies? I'm in the middle of a change over from store bought cleaners to home made ones and I have heaps of bicarb - I would love to be able to use that in the wash. :)
I tumble-dry all boosters, warm's OK but hot will muck up the snaps. Just be aware that they won't get sanitised so may smell a little more than you're used to - I put mine in UV every third wash or so, or rain if possible to remove smells.
And yes, bi-carb's fine, I use about a third of a cup.
Ryatha - Bicarb is perfect for nappy washing. Your nappies will shrink more on higher temp settings and it is likely to lift the PUL on your AIOs and things like that.
Miss Leah is doing well, filling nappies when DH is on change duty :D and feeding well. My supply is settling but OMG right now - OUCH!!!
WOLB: Berry Plush
WOEB: Zebra CT
WOSB: Caramel CT
I only do one prewash too. Then I just use them until they are full. We haven't had a leak yet. I actually think it's a waste of water, that's my reasoning for not doing it. But I hot wash nappies and that is supposed to help with the less prewash thing.
WOHB: GF super night. Yes he is down, hopefully for the night *cross fingers*
Excellent - Thanks again for the info on the pre-washes - seems like I have done all mine then... I guess as a new born I'll be changing them pretty regularly anyway and they can get extra washes then. I'll remember to put them out in the sun or rain, we seem to be getting both every day at the moment... strange Adelaide weather!
Now I am just waiting on some IB's I've ordered and hunting down some more boosters, I only have 6 and I have a feeling that is not going to be enough!
Alioops, glad to hear that you and Miss Leah are doing so well.
you might find that you wont need boosters in the beginning, your changing them every 1-2 hours anyways because they poop so much! Ashton never even wet right through anything I put on him in the beginning, so you might have some time to build up your boosters :) Have you thought of making your own? If you are handy with a sewing machine or even better have an overlocker, you can get some bamboo fleece or soemthing similar online and make some boosters yourself. They are super easy to make!
WOHB: same as before cos he is STILL SLEEPING!!!! YAY!
Mel - by boosters I think they're meaning inserts for pockets ... or stuffers ... etc.
