we have been missing in action as we have ahd a gastro type bug go through the family its taken two weeks to go through all the kids and me. Hoping we are back to normal now.
Lachlan is still a bit grumpy and has gone of solids just wants booby again... at least the shocking poos have stopped and i am confident enough to go fluffy full time now.

I have been researching Cloth Nappies ever since I found out I was pregnant and am in love :D I have just bought my very first mcn ever and am just awaiting delivery from Arimeh's store - So excited! Welcome to my new addiction right?!
As this is my first baby, I have much to learn about Cloth Nappies (AND EVERYTHING ELSE!) but am hoping you could fill me in a little??
I have fallen in love with particular brands of MCN's these include:
Cushie Tushies
Itti Bitti's
and
Baby Beehinds
There are a few more but these 3 are my top picks so far - Now, from what I have learned, every nappie doesn't fit every bub quite right so I am hoping I can buy maybe 2-3 of each brand that I like before bubs arrives, use disposables as well as the few mcn's I'll have for a little while once he's here and then once I figure out which mcn's fits him best, go and buy up big then... Would that be the best way to do it?
We already know he's quite a long bub - Makes sense as we are long/tall kind of people too... Maybe he'll grow into his legs by the time he arrives, I don't know, but just wondering how you all got started on cloth for your first? Did you buy before they arrived or wait and do the trial and error thing with brands after bub was born?? Cheers for any advice! Am a bit clueless but keen to learn and already excited about cloth!

My kids are long and skinny too - cos my DH is 6 foot 7 - so they take after him (cos I'm quite short!)
I didn't start cloth until DS was 14 months old - so didn't do the newborn thing with him. I used disposables fulltime with Miss M until she was about a week old, and then went to cloth part time (sposies at night) until she was two weeks, then went full time cloth. My favs for her were prefolds and covers cos she had skinny legs, so I always got a really good seal, especially with covers with leg gussets. I brought a LOT of nappies before she was born, as I was pretty sure that she would be the same body type as DS - from the information I had from ultrasounds and the fact that her long legs were sticking into my ribs!!!
So I was lucky - I had something to compare it to! But, if I was in your position, thats exactly what I would be doing - buying a few and waiting till bubs gets here. Its hard not to buy though ;)
Tan - yukko gastro - I hate it. Two weeks is sooo long too! Arghhh I think I would have gone insane.
AFM - yup we're moving to the cold cold state - scary scary. Have to ring OB's and stuff today in tassie and see how they are with a VBA2C - or I could be brave like Nelle and homebirth it ;) hehehehehehe

You might find getting some flanny flats and good covers (I used mother ease rikki) the best for the newborn stage. A lot of babies wont fit into small nappies for a month or 2, and they start on newborn nappies. IMO It's a waste of $ as they aren't in them long enough. I am lucky I only had a couple of NB MCN because Ash was straight into smalls at 5kg born. So don't be scared off if the small nappies dont fit properly for a few months.
IM with MissyMoo. Flannel flats or prefolds for the first month or 4 as in our case ROFL. MInd you we did have AIO's and AI2's in NB and as our little man was so little for so long we had alot of use out of them...BUT Vy outgrew NB nappies way to quickly and was into smalls before we knew it. And honestly you changethere bums so much more when their NB that its a waste almost to have put a AIO on only to chang eit so quickly....in saying that though I made s ure I had some magical's in my nappy bag for when we were out and about....hell of alot easier chucking one of them on then worrying about putting a prefold on then a cover IFYKWIM
Get a cover that has tight elastic around the legs or gussetts to help prevent NB poo blow outs too. Ive heard that Rikki's are really good... I ever used them personally so cant say. All though I did have a tots bots that we used a bit when he finally grew into it. PUL covers turn my stomach :sick:

Wow - these GF night nappies are soooooo prrty, (bumblebee and caterpillar) and MY GOODNESS the boosters in them!!! I can't even comprehend what a super, or a super, super night would look like! I love them already, definately another fan of the sidesnappers here.
Ew to all the gastro babies mum's - that can't be pleasant. I had 5 poo's yesterday from DD - I couldn't believe it, and they weren't even gastroey and I was getting annoyed, like having a NB again.
Alicia - CT's and Baby beehinds are my favourites also and am still wanting to try IB's but am too scabby to buy sized nappies :rolleyes:- but I have the AIO one sized ones and am sure they would be too bulky on a newborn at first, so the other girls are right - pre-folds/flats and covers or even cheap terry fitteds (I have some from Ebay that fit NB well) and good covers if want to use cloth from start unless you have a nice chunky bub. (Champion Effort Missymoo!!) Now, Maz is being all modest in her response to you but she sells THE BEST fleece covers hands down in her store or the nappy buckets store, and maybe Arimeh's stores, they have the best leg sealage, are soft and prrty as well.
Arimeh - I didn't know you'd decided to go straight away (I miss so many things, these forums are too big for me) but hopefully won't be so much stress on you looking after 2.5 kids on your own this way. All the best, how exciting.

Alicia - hello and welcome to the madhouse! I agree that you really need to trial several different nappies to find what suits best (for us it wasnt until the last few trials that I have really found the best ones for her). In the early days I agree with what the others have said and would just like to add that I think its a good idea to stick to natural fibre inners at first - for us I found DD was getting reactions to suedecloth and microfleece, only when i switched to natural fibres only did it go away. Not sure if you have checked out Booroi, but you can get yourself some fantastic prefolds and covers from there, even if you do get the small/size 1's its still going to be cheaper than a few boxes of NB sposies :) But you have to do your groove - if you have someone around to help with the washing etc n the early days then great use cloth full time from day 1, if not don't be too hard on yourself, enjoy your newborn and just use the sposies!

bwahahah I don't change my mind that much ;) It just came to me yesterday how selfish I felt that I was being not going to tassie with craig because I want my VBA2C. So whether I get it or not (and I'll still try and find an OB that supports them - otherwise homebirth is the go) then at least my family will be altogether as they should be.:

Kitt3n - I hear ya on the wraps - I made myself a long wrap from cotton voile and it has just been the BEST as my bub goes through phases of wanting to be carried everywhere and my neck can't take it - but the wraps are soooo comfy the way they distribute all over you and she's as happy as larry in there. PS - How do you pronounce Laa? Is it La like the musical note, or Leia like Star Wars or something else - I don't think I've come across a Laa before and I keep meaning on asking whenever I see your sig :)
Mel - I don't think it's selfish at all as it's obviously important to you, but I am the same and don't think I could go without DH for that long either - hopefully you will find a supportive OB - perhaps your existing OB can give you a referral or recommendation that might make it easier?
I feel like a zombie today. Miss E thought it would be wonderful to wake up at 5 and not go to sleep and after waking at 3, 4 and 6:30 yesterday (mainly to do giant poos, yeah that's just what I feel like spritzing out of nappies at that hour of night :doh:) Anyhoo I am zoned out. Which is sad I know, but I'd just gotten so used to her sleeping through from 7 - 7 my system feels like it's been shocked by a NB again.

sas - i have a vatanai and a couple of other wraps on the way - they truly kick a!! its just like a big bear hug. Laa is just her nickname - her little newborn cries were more like the musical note "laa" than waaa waaa waaah, so her daddy gave her that nickname. her real name is matisse :lol:

I have been using flat cloth nappies exlcsively since my boy was born he is now 21months and find them easier than anything else (prob due to being brought up with them) but of course each to their own :D

Welcome to the cloth thread :) If you prefer talking to people that only use flats, there is a section that just relates to flat nappies :) I only use them in emergencies myself.:

It has been AGES since I've been in the forum!
I am now the proud mother of TWO little boys!
Jeremy Paul Wilson was born at 10:50am on Saturday 25th July 2009 and his father, older brother, and I couldn't be happier or more proud!
I successfully achieved the VBAC I was hoping for and delivered a whopper - he was 4.2 kgs and 58 cms!! Beat his older brother by half a kilo and 6 cms!
Now for the cloth related stuff - sorry mods - I should have put all that in the birth announcements section!! :redface:
Anyway, Jeremy is in cloth about 50-70% of the time and I'm hoping to have him in cloth 100% of the time very soon. A friend of mine gifted me with a near full big packet of disposable nappies which I've been alternating with the cloth.
I have a pretty big stash but it isn't that conducive to cloth for a newborn. Though he weighed 4.2 kilos at birth he has chicken legs and a scrawny bum so a lot of my stash doesn't fit him yet. So I'm doing my best with my prefolds and PUL covers and for the most part they are working well. I'm just keen to get him in some other nappies (like my Baby Beehinds for one) and they still swim on him!!
I will try to pop in here much more often as I have missed you guys! Thus far Jeremy is a MUCH better sleeper then James was but he is doing a fair bit of his sleeping in the daytime and then cluster feeds for much of the night.
Good thing my hubby and I are pro co-sleeping as that allows me to get some sleep when I need it.
I will look forward to catching up with all of you in the days and weeks to come!

have you got any NEWBORN sized PUL covers with leg gussets?
i had a 3.79kg bub, so just a tad smaller than yours, and the one mcn combo that gave us 100% leakproofness was a bamboo prefold in a nb PUL cover with leg gussets. we used them 24/7, home and out, cos leakage was much worse if it happened whilst i was out (at doctors etc), and so i stuck to what DIDN"T leak. the small aio's i had bought for "the going out bag" soon got ditched, for "what didn't leak". (prefolds and covers).
I had only bought SMALL covers when pregnant, so had to go get NB sized ones in a hurry (the smalls made for LEAK CITY). bilby was Miss chicken legs for the first four months too. so tummy and leg gapage were my #1 priority (to get rid of them).
i tried some small fleece pockets when she was around 5kg, and i got the fleece ones to work but not the PUL ones.
MAZ - which GF have you ordered? are they customs? after seeing Missymoo's bees and sealife GF creations, blimey, DROOLING doesn't even come CLOSE to describing my reaction!!

********for the new person**********, sorry, i'm too lazy to go back pages and pages of post to find your name. Yes, i think you're on the right track. but as Kitten alluded to, the ONE thing you can safely buy in advance, is bamboo prefolds and nb covers. and a few OSFA fitteds e.g Mandy Macs, Cute Tooshies. whizz kidz etc.
the bamboo prefolds/foldups etc, you will use as boosters, inserts in other stages of nappying, so it's not like you ONLY use them at nb stage. the nb covers, yes, that is the expensive bit, you ONLY use them at nb stage but they are SO USEFUL, that it's worth it.
other things to buy in advance (to make your transition into using mcn, easy) may include:
- a little squirt (to rinse the poop off the nappies before putting now sopping nappy in the dry pail)
- two nappy buckets (one in use, one washed and drying) - if you have toddlers, you can get "lockable" nappy buckets at target for $12 each
- two wetbags (one in nappy bag ready to go, one in the wash)
- a nappy free time mat
- nappy rash cream (there are petroleum based ones, and non-petroleum based ones.) The petroleum based ones (barrier creams) will need to be used with a liner, if used in mcn, else you will stop the absorbent fabrics from being absorbent.
- a clothes horse
- make sure your washing machine is in good condition, if it's on it's last legs, buy a new one NOW, or at least, research "what new machine would i buy, if the washer died soon". I say this, cos MY washing machine DIED when my bub was two months old, i was ill, and it was really bad timing, when you use MCN and REALLY rely on your washing machine working.
- zippered wash bags
- one of those little round plastic rings with the pegs on it, that you hang up socks on, to hang up all the little mcn things e.g boosters, liners.
- mild washing detergent (to avoid nappy rash) examples are ecostore, aware sensitive, euca, soapnuts - the idea is to avoid perfumes, parabens, enzymes, optical brighteners, colours etc
- a nappy bag big enough to accomodate cloth nappies and wetbag, most are designed to fit sposies only (which are much tinier)
- buy baby clothing (bottoms, onesies) a bit bigger (to accomodate the cloth bottom). if the clothing is too firm, you may get compression leaks, eg where the snaps do up in the crotch area.
- a stash of cloth wipes/face washers e.g of cotton velour, to use instead of disposable baby wipes. (Most of these have the major active ingredient of propylene glycol, which gives many bubs nappy rash). You just use water and the cloth wipe. Then "little squirt" the cloth wipe after you have cleaned up a pooey little bottom and throw the cloth wipe in with the nappies.
- half a metre of micropolar fleece, to cut up into liners. no sewing needed, the edges don't fray.
- a few dozen bamboo trifolds/foldups (at booroi)
- a four pack of nb sized PUL leg gusset covers (on sale at nurture nappies). Don't take the labels off, don't wash them, if you happen to have a bigger baby than the reccomended size for those covers, then exchange them for the bigger size.
- you are human, you are pregnant, you are NESTING, buy something "just cos it's cute" to show off your new baby's little bot.
- if you are a basic sewer, buy a metre of bamboo fleece and have a try at making some trifolds yourself - double layer of 30 x 30cm, overlock all around. you're done. fold it into three, lay that into a leg gusset cover, lie a microfleece liner on top of the bamboo - now put that combo on a teddybear for practice LOL.
- join the ozclothnappies yahoo group, wonderful resource, (read their link FAQ frequently asked questions about mcn)
- join the nappycino forum, wonderful mcn advocacy resource (read their section "how to nappy a newborn")
- go in the Great Down under Nappy Hunt in September, it's a treasure hunt, you find icons along the way and collect those (for prizes of mcn!). Many of the participating sponsors have good discounts on too, for that month.
- don't be scared of SIZED nappies. there are some brands that do generous weight ranges, i got excellent value out of nappies that went from 7 - 16kg for example. my child tt-d at around 12kg anyhoo. (i wouldn't mind if that had happened later, i MISS her being in mcn!!!).
From birth to 7 kg, we used the bamboo prefolds and covers mainly.
From 7kg to toilet training, we used mainly pocket/ all in two nappies in the 7 - 16kg size. (i read a stat that the average age for a bub in cloth to TT is 13kg, so i bought the "up to 16kg nappies thinking i had given us a 3 kg window).
my initial fear, when i was brand new like you hon, was that i would have to buy
36 x nb nappies
36 x small nappies
36 x medium nappies
36 x large nappies
36 x extra large nappies
THAT was my view of SIZED nappies ($$$$$$$$) LOL. and it scared me silly! turned out to be NOTHING like what i had feared at all.
I haven't given you links, cos we are not allowed to do that on this forum. but google will help you no end.

You have all given me much more to research! TBH I hadn't even thought about Prefolds/Flats for NB's, I was kinda hoping to be lazy and do dispoasables if my AIO's don't fit and wait until they do - Just becuase I am scared off by the research I have to do into more kinds of nappies after it took me ages to even learn the small amount I have about AIO's! Honestly, I like the AIO's beacuse they're gorgeous, great for the environment, will save me $$ in the long run (We plan to have 2-3 children) and because they seem so EASY! Just as easy as a disposable but with washing time, which I don't mind! But every other nappy seems like so much work and I am overwhelmed!
I am so confused by all the fibres available, at the Baby Expo an Itti Bitti's lady was explaining to me why she uses different nappies for night time, Bamboo with inserts or something, this all confuses me to no end! Although I do love the idea of keeping it as natural as possible! There's soooooo much to learn!
I have just bid on one of Schmickers Brand New Cushie Tushies on Buy for Babies - The Blue one with the white spots I have loved forever - Excited about that! Even DH is excited about "minky bums" :D

Well, I got most of my nappies now that I had ordered, they are washed and hanging out. Still not quiet enough to go full time though. but getting there if I was daily should have enough till I get the rest. I only have about 20 sposies left and don't want to buy anymore.
My dh made me a little squirt thing on the laundry tub, works great and only cost $30, and as I have a bad back no bending over to use it.
