Cloth Nappies #182

Hi All,

I won't be in here much for awhile.
We have had major issues at home and a big blue with my FIL and we are now looking for a new place to live.
In the meantime, I have decided to put Jeremy in full time disposables until we find a place, move and get settled.
To deal with the stress of the situation we are pretty much only in the house to sleep which limits my ability and time to do any laundry (I'm staying up super late tonight just to get clothes and the last load of cloth nappies on the line).
I will pop in whenever I can to lurk and will let you all know when we have moved and settled in!

Bimboo - i haev two ideas for you

1st - try her in some sidesnappers
and
2nd - measure her rise and only buy sidesnappers that the maker/seller tells you, are compatible with YOUR child's rise

How to measure rise?
get a tape measure (under three dollars at the supermarket)
start measuring at her belly button
take the tape down, under her legs and up the other side
stop measuring at the small of her back
that is her RISE

any nappy you buy, needs to have a RISE of at LEAST that number, if not a few more cms, to allow for growing room.

So find some sidesnapper nappies you are interested in, and email the sites/wahms to enquire "my child's rise is Xcm, what is the rise of your Y nappy? would that rise suit MY child?

This will hopefully prevent you buying unsuitable nappies (too short in the rise for your little giraffe).

My DD suited SS very well, when she had chubby thighs (from 4 - 11 months) and then when she lost the rolls (from 11 months - 27 months when she tt-d), i was so impressed with the adjustability of the SS. They are so adjustable that they cope with a massive change in shape, no problems.

One extra thing, i learnt (eventually!) that not ALL sidesnappers suited my DD. When i started out, i had no clue there was a difference between nappies, in CROTCH WIDTH. After buying (by mistake due to my ignorance) many WIDE crotch nappies that did not fit my DD right, and then accidentally buying some NARROW crotch nappies, that fitted my DD GREAT, i came to the conclusion - ok, there is such a thing as NARROW and WIDE crotch nappies, my child obv suits the narrow ones, so i made a concerted effort to hunt down the narrow crotch, sidesnapper brands. Yes, alot of emails were sent, but the sellers and makers were very helpful, telling me the width in centimetres, so i could compare that, with the crotch width of the nappies that suited her best.

I tell you this, just in case your DD happens to suit one in particular. i think i spent a fair bit of money, before i discovered what she really needed, so if i can save someone else doing what i did, i'm happy to do that.

Hey Gigi :) Its been quite rainy down here, so thank god I have a big stash or else the kids would be in disposables again!!!! Its quite pretty down here, and very cheap to buy propery - which will be good for us!! Means I can be a SAHM instead of returning to work when the next baby is 3 months old like I had to with DS and Miss M :D

Am sooo converted to GF's, Just sooo in love. am selling a bunch of mine that I dont use and when we grow out of the med itti's and they are sold, I will go and get 7 GF's. The finish on those nappies is lovely.
Not much happening here, am using my BBB heaps more now, they are fitting lil man heaps better now.
I also find that if Adam only has to "learn" how to do 1or 2 types of nappies, then I can get him to so them up on the "right" snaps so they fit good.

What cover are you using with the BBH fitteds at night???

Genesa Forge's are areal quality, narrower crotch, side snapping optional nappy that come in night, super night, and super, super night options Snap in ones the ones I've got - love em.

hey bimboo - wow twins and a 2y.o in cloth - hail thee!!

a good option for the little ones might be booroi prefolds and covers - they have a great double leg gusset to keep in all that NB BF "goodness" lol... also kissaluvs contoured fitteds are great

B - well she must just be a super duper wetter!! I've had the BBH PUL's leak at the legs and tops before but not the wool covers of the maz fleece covers but my DD isn't a huge wetter but that must be very frustrating.

The OSFM will very likely be too big for newborns esp being twins they will prob be smaller so the prefolds seem to be the popular choice. My DD was itti bitti so I would expect any subsequent children I have to possibly be tiny as well so will be using my OSFM stash once older but plan on buying prefolds and newborn covers to do until then. When/if it happens that is ;-)

All you cloth guru's - What do we think of nappy knickers? I am thinking of getting another lot of nappies in the larger sizes and though nappy knicker type ones might be good as I thought they could be used later for TT and for night use?? Is that right? Anyone done this?

Also what is your favourite swim nappy?

Bimboo - I've found that I get leaks out of every PUL cover except for mother-ease Rikki ones, they are really awesome, and very trustworthy!!! Expensive, but worth it. Its all I reach for now cos I know the others just leak. Have to get some more actually, don't have enough for three kids in cloth!!

Sarah - we use monkey doodlez swim nappies here. can't help you with the knickers though cos I don't have any in my stash, and haven't even thought about it for DS, although he probably should be toilet trained by now, but I've been a bit busy!!!!

Been lurking for awhile / not getting on BB as I've been trying to do some uni work and sewing for DS's baptism (Sun just gone) with a boy who doesn't like me getting too much done in one sitting (and uni programs that don't like my home internet connection)

a slight woo-hoo - DS had his first full night in cloth last Friday (but hasn't made it all night since - been a bit slack:( )

Little squirt question and pocket MCNs - when LSing pockets (I've got some GKs and BGs) do you remove the pocket stuffing first or after washing? I only got our LS installed on Sat by my dad (too hard for DH to work out) and so am just getting used to it. I was removing the stuffing before washing in the machine before (when putting into the bucket) but now I'm not sure. DH will have to do whichever when I head back to school at the end of Oct so want to make sure he knows what to do - mainly so he doesn't go straight to the sposies :rolleyes:.

I introduced myself on this thread a few weeks ago and then my computer promptly went on the fritz! But I'm back on line now! Just to refresh - I use mainly pocket nappies on my almost 7mo old daughter - green kids and bumgenius. I have a few other pocket brands as well as a few baby beehind fitteds and some itti bitti snap ins.

I just spent a week in Cairns and used disposals and hated it - they smell so much more then cloth!

Liz - I spray the pockets with the inserts in them. Then I dump it all in the bucket, and take the inserts out just before putting in the washing machine.

12 days north was just the bomb!!!! Our stash of auriels, Gf's and WC NN came with us......OMG my nappies dried in one day. I couldnt believe it!!!!

Had a ball....although I was ready to kill Jed in the car yesterday....long story but 10+ hours in the car with a pompis arse is enough for maz lol.

I am absolutely loving our GF night nickers. I managed to score 7 of them secondhand before we went away and we used them the whole time on Vy...friggen awesome!!!!

Not happy with AP!!!! I paid $25 to have my mail held while we were away and I found 2 internationally posted parcel's stuffed into our mail box and a pick up slip from monday LAST WEEK!!!! Wait until they open at 9am

So used my 8 cloths yesterday (still trying to decide which brand i like best and i'm not allowed to spend too much money til we get loan pre approval cleared), was a bad idea because was a baby non-poo day and we had a seeping mess at 7am because was in a sposie. bring on the hot weather so i can get nappies dried overnight.

Swinging towards a bulk of ct because they seem to dry uber quick compared to the bbh aio (3 days of swearing at them on the line till they dried), fit her fantastic and have managed to contain the power poos! *sigh* have to wait til mid oct tho. Maybe if i discreetly order a few at a time?

Making an offer on the lovely house that my partner and i love today so cross fingers for me please!

Yes rent and mortgage would be a PITA to do on one wage.

Well we have the benifit of the property being part of a divorce settlement and it's been listed over a month and vacant for 4 but apparently the guy is a bit of a tight wad because he is advertising for 30k over what the property is worth. Realtor is a sweety (still don't trust him but it helps) and is recommending all the checks which we'd do regardless. Funny thing is that if we get the house, my partner will have to do the settlement whilst I'm in melb as it'd be Nov and I won't be getting into it til Jan! At least my partner is productive about things and doesn't take the ostrich approach. I'll be getting back to Kal with a new house and all the utilities set up :P Lucky we don't have any furniture to move as we're in a fully furnished rental place!

Been a long time since I posted. But we are still fully cloth bummed here and I now have the swing of washing and getting them dry. I also have grown my stash so I only have to wash every 1.5-2 days which has been handy with all the appointments we have at the moment. But Grace is starting to grow out of her smalls, so on the hunt now for mediums!

Anyhoo, nappy talk. Have sold a bunch of mine and am going to order 7 from GF as soon as lil man grows out of his ittis. I am going to get all embriodered ones so that he always has flash nappies. They seem to hold their resale fairly well so i can justify it.
Thank god for clothes horses, all my washing stayed inside today, went out to the post office this arvo and if I didnt have a temp gauge in my car, I would have sworn I was driving through snowy white-out conditions. Its eerie...

Maz - were they the GF Nappy Knickers on Vy? I ordered a Pink Ai2 Windpro Fleece Pair of the Med Knicker Nappies to trial on DD to see if I want to use these when the time comes to upgrade to a larger size for Elly exp as will hopefully have 2 (and only 2 - Bimboo has me slightly worried now :lol:) in cloth so can justify buying a little stash of larges for later.

Does anyone use swim nappies? I have a Imse Vimse one I bought for DD but was suprised it was just a little plasticy underpants type thing - are they all like that?

Quick Q: has anyone found they need additional boosters with the Bonnibuns aio? Thinking I have a freakishly heavy wetting baby here or i might need to wash a couple more times to get absorbancy up. Love the fit on her, they dry great and aren't incredibly bulky. she's started rolling but gets stroppy if I put a bbh or ct on because they're quite bulky.

Yeah swimming nappies are just like little plastic undies, they are designed just to hold poo in, so it hopefully doesn't escape in the pool. They are not absorbent at all so its ideal to put them on bub just before going in the water or risk getting wee'd on. You would be surprised how many parents( including me) i see at the pool with wet patches on them...I have a new job as a baby swimming instructor.

Ok ladies have a question here I have just been given a pile of minappies by a girlfriend who brought them used them once and then went to sposies. They are just plain terry nappies with some flannel inside. I was wondering if i could jazz them up at all.
I was thinking of having a go at making a few covers to go over them as well. BUt wondered if maybe i could dye them somehow

Tan - I've just ordered some dyes to jazz up the fitteds I'm making out of bamboo fleece, we could have a dying party to try to work out how to do it? I'm also experimenting with different fabrics to make covers and pockets, so company is always welcome (not that I am a great sewer or anything ;) )

I got a swim nappy from the pool! Not sure on the brand but I figured they wouldn't have an issue with it of it came from them ;)

On the fluffy front, guess who forgot to put a nappy liner in when lil one did a giganto poo yesterday :wall: Proves I shouldn't talk on the phone pre coffee when sleep deprived and try change a nappy! On the bright side to quote an earlier post the MCN was fantastic "pootainment" and if she was in a sposie it would have been an up back job!
