I got fluffy mail! I bought some pop-ins from the lovely NaeNae and they arrived today. She sent a dri-night booster with them - I had to google to work out how to use it - I think it'll be a while before Mr I sleeps long enough to use it going on past experience with the Duke.
I've started using my flushable liners thanks to this thread. I bought them long before Mr i was born and didn't remember to open them until yesterday.
WOIB: Pop-in! Which is probably due for a change.
Everytime I empty my bucket I put a few drops of either tea tree or eucalyptus oil on some paper towel and wipe it out (including the lid) - my nappy bucket has never smelt!:

So summer is the worst time i think.
SOme people use different containers (than trad. nappy pails). e.g flip lid bins, bins with zero lid, bin kept in laundry near open back door, etc.
What i ended up doing was
- alternating TWO nappy buckets (with lids)
- doing a daily nappy wash (usually in the morning, so the night nappy could be washed immed).
- when one bucket was emptied into the washing machine, it would be immed rinsed out with a dash of antiseptic and hot water, then put upside down to dry. If it was day time, i would leave the bucket standing upright in full sun, to allow the UV to clean the bucket insides. THen the other bucket would be put into the toilet room (where i little squirted the mcn). So there was always "one in use, one drying".
i read what other people did, considered the siting/sun of my unit, where the bucket lived, what suited the situation, my resources (including my time).
gotta do wot works for you.

So I head out to the shops before the mega heat hits today and get caught up. so it's 30+ degrees in the house at 10am when i finally get home because some bubble headed bimbo (whistles innocently) forgets to put the a/c on pre shop run. I also managed to leave the lid off the nappy bucket with it full of yesterday's teething pee nappies.......... So not doing that again. Still got 3 million boxes to unpack and a grizzly/clingy baby that's having probs adjusting to the new house, has a sniffle and refuses to nap.

Yes, nappy buckets are not heavy, but sure are awkward to carry (with your other shopping).
the LID ON or LID OFF thing is on a case by case basis. works for some, not for all. just experiment with what suits your household.
also people living in humid climates, have other techniques re the nappy bucket.
i only have experience in the hot dry heat (45 in summer).
so much of MCN-ing is empirical - try stuff out, if it works, keep doing it. if it doesn't, experiment with other ideas (usually ones you hear about here, on nappycino, on ozclothnappies etc).

I will admit that my nappies sat in the bucket longer than usual before I washed them which I'm not proud of, but we went away on an impromptu trip New Years Day so I left them and washed them when we got back the next day.
They were a tad smelly so I did a hot wash (60 degrees) and then as I was hanging them on the line I got worried that I did something wrong.
One of my BBH hemps has disintergrated around the snaps and my pea pods bamboo trifold is coming apart near the label as well.
Did I do something wrong? Or had these two nappies just lived their life?

had you little squirted the nappies BEOFRE leaving them in the nappy bucket?
cos if you have to leave the nappy wash a bit longer, LS-ing all nappies, not just the poo ones, will leave a lower urine concentration in teh bucket.
if going away, i would load the washing machine and set the machine to wash while you're gone. better to come back to a washing machine of damp but urine free nappies (that might need another wash due to sitting there damp) rather than nappies that have sat in urine all that time.
Some people only wash the nappies once a week and say it works fine. But i have read too many posts from people about disintegrating nappies (from sitting in urine) so being the cautious soul i am, i decided i wasn't going to chance it, and started doing the daily morning wash (so night nappies got washed virtually immed).
it really helps the nappies stay in good shape if you look after them.
sometimes, makers get a run of a poor quality fabric, i gather when that happens, no matter WHAT you do, you'll get holes.
i also dried my nappies in the shade (more to do with having no washing line!) and didn't experience the fading that people talk about, and no pegmarks as i used a clothes airer (did the nappies up with the snaps instead, over a rail).
so many variables as to how we all wash the nappies. (or i USED to!!)
i have no idea how old your disintegrated nappies are, to know if they have come to the end of their life.
how "hard" or "soft" your water quality is, is yet ANOTHER variable.
baby beehinds has a very good CARE OF NAPPIES section, even down to how to peg them to avoid wearing out the elastic! very very thorough.
the section is not signposted very well (last time i looked took me ages to find it) but once you DO find it, have a read, see if you are doing what they recommend.
if you ARE doing what they recommend, and you are within the warranty time, contact bbh and tell them what has happened, take photos. I am not sure if you are meant to contact them direct or the place you bought the bbh from, but i'm sure teh bbh customer service will tell you.
anyone buying for newborns, fantastic bamboo baby bargains at "beyondpinandblue". clothing and bedding. i dare you to look and not go "cluck cluck cluck" (like i did!). awww, sooo beautiful! the bamboo fabric used is so silky, smooth, breathes great. very thin jersey type, not thick like the bamboo terry or bamboo fleece used with nappies.

I suspect the nappies sat too long and that caused the problem.
The BBH hemp nappy was a 2nd hand nappy and I have no idea how old it is so I don't expect I would get any help from customer service at BBH as I didn't actually purchase it.
Thanks for your suggestions Gigi - I already knew about BBH care of nappy section and I hang my BBH nappies in the way they suggest to help the elastic last longer.
The Pea Pods trifold is probably still useable.

I feel guilty because I needed a fluff fix and went shopping with my cc.
So I got 3 more Bonnibuns workhorse because Charlie can't seem to outwet those even with the 3 sippy cups of water a day, a bonnibuns night nappy (they are DIVINE on my lil one of a night) and FINALLY a swim nappy because the new house has a pool!
got my replacement nappies for a couple that apparently were old stock and the leg elastic went. minor fluff fix. big order not due til next week so i am chewing my nails in anticipation.
Seems my day was one GIANT POO so I am back to being whiney to DP about getting a LS but first we have to pay the 8k rewiring bill (ouch) oh and get a couch, table and high chair. picnics on the floor are a tad messy now and the crumbs get irritating.
How do i get rid of blueberry stains off fluff? I know they're good for the wee one but the nappies are copping it!
Well off to dig some shoes up that are suitable to walk down the street in tomorrow! Trying to shed my festive rear-inflation to save buying yet another new wardrobe.
I haven't been in this thread for so long I'm embarrased to skulk back in :redface: Elly has started trying to pull her nappy off which is very cheeky, started with the disposables we had to use for ages, diarrhoea followed by nasty nappy rash, this kids poor bottom had to cop the 'plastic bags' for a while, now she tries to do it with her fluffy ones as well. Anyone have any tips for this (other than putting shorts over the top which seems to be the only solution thus far)?
Do you ladies with older bubs think it would be weird if I let DD sit on the little kid toilet seat on the toilet every now and then??? I know she's way to young to be actually toilet trained, but wasn't sure if should just let her get used to the toilet so she' likes it and knows what it's about when the time comes, especially if the new bub will still be little when she shows signs of readiness. She is so interested in the toilet, she follows me there and actually cries if she realizes I'm in there without her and says wee-wee, wee-wee when I go and then yukky when the loo paper comes out and giggles when it's flushed. She also tells me 'poo-poo, and screws up her nose and sniffs' as soon as she's done one - so was thinking maybe the cloth nappies are letting her know when she's dirty and I should maybe see if she doesn't mind the toilet occasionally. Mum thinks I'm mad so I haven't, but I'm not talking about TTing just, learning what its there for. What do you think? She wears GF nappy knickers a lot now so wouldn't be hard if did once a day, is it insane?

sas- IKWYM about the pulling the nappies off business... if they're velcro fastening, try putting them on back to front for a while, if you're determined that your DD should keep them on. Otherwise, side-snappers or snap-fastening nappies seem to be harder for little ones to get off or they're not as interested in trying for some reason. Maybe because they don't make that lovely velcro-ripping sound?
I got a potty and started putting it in DS's room, telling him about it, and putting DS on it (with nappy on still, at first) at about 5-6 months, just to get him used to it and let him know what it was for and that it wasn't something unnatural or to be frightened of. He took to it really well, and I just never made a big deal out of it. Then I progressively introduced a kids' toilet seat insert (about $5 from Kmart, I think) and just kept explaining that we do pee-pee and caca (his words) in the toilet and to tell me if he needed to go. I think if we hadn't had so many disruptions in the last 6 months (overseas travel, moving house, starting childcare) he would be much closer to being fully TTed. As it is, he is pretty much TTed at home now and getting better all the time at day care now that I've taken him out of the centre and he's at family daycare with older, TTed kids. It was too much for the staff to handle at the CCC as he was the ONLY kid out of 40+ that was in cloth nappies, and was the youngest kid to be at least partly TTed. It seemed too difficult to just put him on the toilet when he asked, as they were too busy with so many other kids.
We have had to go back to full-time nappies for the last week or so, as DS has had a bout of diarrhea, possibly caused by teething or a food intolerance (or both! such fun. :( ). It's too hard for him to tell me he needs to go when it's a sneaky pooh. Poor boy has a terrible rash with it, so it's no fun at all.
Like Bimboo said, it's great not to have any of those issues that a lot of kids have with toileting or a fear associated with it. There's some pretty helpful info on a website called tribalbaby. I think it's an org site.
I soooo miss shopping for fluff though! I was sorting thru some of DS's teeny NB stuff and found an itti d'lish. Almost got clucky for a minute there! Woah.

DD2 is starting move around a bit more and has the cubbiest thighs! the only things that fit her now are sidesnappers and the nappies I made for her, the rest have to go :( But that means when I sell the rest I get to go on a nappy shopping spree! :dance:

i'm another that is here but not buying so not having a lot to contribute. we seem to be doing really well with cloth though. DH and I have no issues staying on top of it all - DD has had about an hour of very very mild nappy rash in the past 8 months, never had a sposie on her bum - so i'm thinking we're doing more than ok!

Maz is your bb an ISo or a pocket/trim? mine are all ISO's.... the SS in question is a meduium long, not a OSFM... i didnt know ss did a OSFM?:

Hi all! Back after our month staying with mum & dad - they were impressed to see how cloth nappy technology has moved on since I was in terries :)
We did sposies for the (8hr) trip each way though, and the day before so her cloth could dry. Very unimpressed with poo leak from a certain expensive brand... could not wait till she could go back into cloth.
Lots of fluffy mail when we got back: more Pixie Poppits for daycare, a bumG organic because it was on special :), cute froggy Bummis cover for her fitteds as she's growing out of her small covers.
She's now in daycare 2 days/wk, so I spent last week visiting with her and showing all the staff how MCNs work. They all seem ok with it once I said 'no rinsing, just put it in the wetbag' so hopefully it will be ok.
Now am debating whether to buy the new BBH night nappy. Has anyone tried it yet? What's the fit like? Someone said it was like a Lotus, which are narrow crotch IIRC, but BBH Magicalls are wide crotch, so I'm confused...
Oh, and we finally bought a Little Squirt. But we can't use it as we can't remove the water supply pipe to put the LS fitting on! And we can't get a plumber to take the entire cistern off and install it, as LS is not Aus Standards approved. When I rang and asked about that they said it meets the Standard but they haven't got a licence number because it's too expensive... so plumbers refuse to put it in. Argh. Any ideas what to do now?

JESS - i would contact wherever you bought the LS from, and tell them what has happened. See what they suggest.
bilby's dad has enough plumbing knowhow and tools to replace a tap washer, and that enabled him to install our LS (from instructions we found on the internet by googling for it).
if the seller doens't help, i would contact nurture nappies or baby beehinds and ask them for help. (they both sell them too). i think there is enough "goodwill" in the MCN community, so even if you bought the LS from elsewhere, wouldn't matter.

I have never used the BBH MInkee Magic-Alls, can anyone tell me how they fit around the legs? I have a 20mo with chubby thighs and a 2mo with skinny thighs... any ideas if they will suit either?
Matilda does have a couple of the smooth magic-alls and they fit fine but they are velcro where the minkee ones are snaps... any ideas?
Also if I buy them is it worth buying extra boosters or not?
MAZ - Sorry I haven't got back to you about the prefolds, exploring my options at the moment and wondering if I can make it through with what I have and move her into some small AIO's :think:.
What is your carrier like Maz? I have a basic sling for Matilda, it has been great but she is now starting throw herself back in it, would yours be more supportive to prevent this? I have a Ergo too but I am not liking it at the moment...

The magic alls seem to fit DS(3) pretty good since he was 16months when we start cloth. he had skinny legs and now there a tad on the chubby side and fit good too :D
Cant help with the 2 month old but i do have a few Magic All Smalls that are a lil bigger compared to my small itti bitti, ive heard they work at night time really good because they have the pocket at the back so i hope so :D
I have extra boosters for DS for night time and it lasts the night.. pretty good considering nothing else worked.
I wasn't too much of a fan of the magicalls, but the petitalls look SO good that I had to order 3.........................
