Cloth Nappy General Discussion #196

It's What's on Their Butt. I think it started out as WOHB (his/her) but if you have a couple in cloth, people go with their kids' initials.
You shouldn't need to strip wash, only if you start to get a build up of washing detergent, or they're a bit stinky even after washing...it's never been a routine maintenance thing for me. I think the napisan thing harks back to the days of our parents who used flats - I don't think the napisan's great for elastic and PUL. I use flats and prefolds, and still dry pailed them, although it is nice to know I can bring in the big guns for those ones if I want. :p A small amount of detergent and the sun should do just fine.

And yeah I saw the BBH hemps are a good price - I really like them, many prefer the bamboo, but I like them the same - the bamboo are slightly more absorbent but consequently take longer to dry. Both types arrive soft, and then go a bit crunchy, but my hemps are so old that they're actually quite soft again. :lol: This may also be known as 'falling apart'...

what are the best sites for nappies? I found Australian Baby Suppliers had a good range but got my new ones off the BBH site. I also found on facebook a site called Kodomo which looked pretty well priced. I know someone who makes nappies and has an e-bay store so i should probably try hers next lol

Nelle - Thanks for that. i think i have the bamboo ones but they still feel nice. A bit stiff but a nice fit on my DD. I love the minky too but like the natural and organic fibres of the others. There are sooo many out there, I can see how ppl get addicted!

There are probably heaps of stores I'm not familiar with these days (Australian Baby Supplies is one of those, thanks!). But I used to shop from Darlings Downunder, Nurture Nappies, Baby Soft Landings, The Wee Wuns...there are stacks more obviously! Those ones were sort of like the supermarkets, with lots of brands, but some of them seem to have gotten a little smaller.

Okay, I want to start learning about brands...what can you guys tell me about:
Grovia?
Pop-In?
Bonnibuns?

ooooh pop ins are one of my faves here! i put a night booster into a dream dri and it lasts 13 hours here with my little heavy wetting monkey! plus without the night booster and just the inserts, it lasts for over 4 hours without a leak! seriously thinking of purchasing some more :D

Napisan stops the nappies being absorbant if they're bamboo. bamboo is naturally antibacterial so you don't need anything added. I do put a couple of drops of lavender in the fabric softener dispenser every few washes to act like a canestan anti-fungal rinse but that's it. No optical brighteners in your washing powder/liquid either. Also PUL isn't supposed to be washed above 60 degrees to prevent it delaminating and buggering the waterproof attributes of the shell.

thanks CL i don't think i've done to much damage to them. Would i be better off setting my washing machine to warm then JIC? I always use an eco based washing powder such as eco store or Aware so i think they are ok.
I've had no sun so had to use the drier which is a pain with stains.
Just wondering who is good and puts their PUL covers in a lingerie bag? Should i be bothered? do you think it helps preserve them?
I finially worked out after looking it up on the site why there are extra velcro tabs on the BBH covers so i think that will help my covers looking nice

i'm so loving MCN's right now. So easy and my baby's bum feels so nice in the ergo or sling :)

I wash all my nappies in plain old cold water
and i never put the shells in a bra bag... i don't have one big enough!

yeah, warm is advisable but I just do cold and pump the water up a bit. I always make sure I do a pre rinse to dilute the wee because Pixie is a really heavy wetter. also if the inserts aren't full of water then they absorb all the washing water and won't clean as good. I've never bothered with a lingerie bag but I do however make sure everything is unsnapped to avoid the elastic being tugged while the clothes are spinning from the bits getting tangled. I've found the older shells that I didn't unsnap have degraded way faster in the elastic because I wasn't unsnapping at the start of my MCN using period. Shells don't last as long because of the chlorine content in the water here so I try to do what I can to get as much use as possible out of them!

DD's nappies always get stained throughout winter because I don't sun as much. It won't effect performance and they get pooed/wee-ed on anyway so I'm not too fazed.

I always just threw covers in...although do not look to me though as the pinnacle of 'taking care of nappies'. When ours fall apart I think to myself 'I deserve this'. A warm wash would be fine. Many people even use cold, just because of the energy difference - I looked in our washing machine manual the other day and the difference between a cold and warm wash is like...well I couldn't find it without getting the manual but it's REALLY significant.

thats good to know about the cold wash cycle, i'll go back to that if it still works ok and maybe just do hot every second wash.

I only ever do a hot wash on the inserts only and only when doing a stripwash/deep soak in rocking green. I probably deep clean inserts about once every 2 months unless they're smelling stale. I have a front loader so just prewash with a low water level and then pause it when all the inserts are submerged on a high water level hot load. Last deep clean was to rid the inserts of any eco store residue after Pixie had that nasty burning reaction to it. She hasn't had any reactions since we swapped to the amolin liquid except for when she was getting her 2 molars at once.

it's not so much the cattiness... just a million people commenting on nappies all at once with accronyms i don't understand ><; EG; "int" and "dets up" WTH is THAT all about?!

I still have 3 issy bear with night & day inserts if anyone is interested.

we seem to be a society that keeps putting acronyms down! it took me months to work out what FTW was! u can imagine what i kept coming up with (and yes the f stood for firetruck in my versions lol)

It is
int: interested (meaning they are interested in the nappy but usually waiting for details or checking funds)
deets up: Details are up (seller has uploaded the details of the nappy so people can now see how much it is etc)

Teresa, the cattiness is coming from a "elite and secret" MCN group that thinks they are top sh*t and keeps making fun of people and picking on them. It's crap but I am dealing with it on the MCN chatter page (cause I am admin) soo over it. Don't worry, they will find other places to stir soon and our page will go back to normal. :)
