ok so if i get pocket nappies - i can get different brands, and some will be one size fits all and some won't ? is that correct? can you just stuff any brand with any .. stuffing? And the pocket nappies don't need a cover on the outside? is that right?
in short (cos I'm feeding) - yes! :P
ok. so pocket nappies would probably be best for me - or AIO's - and some are dependent on size and some aren't. So let me sum up what I THINK I'm getting through my thick skull
Pocket nappies are good because they are quick drying, don't need an outer cover and can be shoved with as much stuff to suit childs needs - and can come in one size fits all or sized to fit.
AIO's - are good because they don't need an outer cover OR an insert but take longer to dry and come sized to fit.
Am I on the right track? I'm feeling a little bamboozled..
Thanks Mel for all your questions - they were what I would have asked. Now I'm all clear too! I reckon pockets might be a good idea.

Yep you're definitely right. Coming into winter, I know I'll appreciate the pockets, since they'll dry quickly on a clotheshorse, and since inserts/boosters have no elastic, they can be tumble dried if they need a hurry-up. :)

OK well I think I have made up my mind on what I will be testing first!! I have my eye on a couple of pockets on ebay (and i figure if i don't like them they were only $15) and I think for nighttime I will try to ecobumz from canada. Definitely will be looking at more brands though - I didn't realise they were sooo cute!!!!! what have I been doing for the last 16 months.. I musta been crazy!!!!
Ok, so I have washed all the nappies.
I am not game enough to wash the PUL and wool covers yet. But will get to it when the weather is nicer on Monday/Tuesday.
With the wool covers , you have to lanonised it? I saw Lansinoh - but on the package it says its for breastfeeding?? Is this the correct product? Its about $18+ for a small tube?
Oh, I have also recieved my bumgenius 3.0, but not game enough to wash it yet. I will wait for my bub to arrive to try it on for size then go from there. I believe I have enough nappies to last me a few days!
What type of wool covers Catriona? If they're BBH ones, many of us don't bother to lanolise the BBH ones. Your PUL covers and BumG's will dry pretty quickly, so you don't necessarily need to wait for a sunny day for those!
And yep, Lansinoh's fine, dissolve a pea sized amount in hot water, mix that with some lukewarm water, soak your cover for I think an hour or more (can be overnight), dry gently (like rolling in a towel to wring out the extra moisture and then lay flat).
How's that for a textbook explanation! :P
That's definitely for knitted wool covers, for the BBH covers, I machine wash them and don't lanolise, they're pretty tough. They'd probably stink less if I lanolised...
Just DON'T wash in hot. That can be a very tough and unfun lesson to learn.
And to the uninitiated, beware of Janie AND Maz, they BOTH are addicts who will lead you down their slippery slope to nappy addiction and then you will never be the same...perhaps that's not a bad thing though? :think:

honey the pul covers dry in no time honestly..invest in a clothes horse and put them on there. i also bought one of those little rounde peg things from the reject shop. its has about 20 pegs stuck onto it, I peg all my boosters on one and wipes on another. much easier to put all the little stuff on one thing and put that on the line. I also put my nappys ont he clothes horse so when it rains outside, I can just get the whole thing in one go and take it inside :):
As for lanolising...blah, I never do it (yes im lazy but hey got 4 kids, who has the time) Ive changed over to fleecie covers cause they dry a hell of alot quicker them wool ones and their cheaper. Bu tin saying that there is nothing as nice as a gorgeous pair of knitted longies ahhhhhh and never put your wool cover inthe dry either hon...I felted my knitted longies due to Jed putting them in the 'normal' warm wash and they disapeared in the leg of something...thank god I have a little boy that can still wear them but it wreaks them so badly.

I realised that I had done the wash in Omo matic front loader powder!! :wall:
I read on the wash instructions not to use anything with brigtheners etc etc.... will this wreck my BBB? Its too late now if it has.. but they all look alright though.

I use what ever im washing my other stuff in but ive found it hand for myself to do the following.
I put a full scope into a 2 litre bottle of water and let it dissolve, I then use about 1/4 of that bottle with every wash of nappies. I dont have to worry about putting to much powder in.
You wont have wrecked your BB's hun. you wil have to eventually do a strip wash down the track due to build up but you are along way of that atm.
Catriona, normal washing powder should be fine........just don't use the ones that have softeners or optical brighteners added.
I use Amolin/Purity, and now sometimes Earth Choice liquid, as that's what I use for the rest of our washing.
I have no idea what I use...depends what mood I'm in, and what I can find! :P But yeah, you don't need to use as much as the instructions say, for my front loader it says 1/2 a scoop and I use less than a 1/4. Plain water and agitation from the machine does most of the work.
As Maz says, you won't have wrecked your nappies, just if you did that all the time they'd wear or fade quicker than normal, and using too much detergent, the detergent might build up in your nappies and make them less absorbent. (The same rule can apply for towels and tea-towels too!)

Um...off the top of my head, I think I make trifolds about 30x30cm, and perhaps boosters 12x30cm? That's in theory anyway, after I cut them out all wonky and then overlock them all wonky, who knows what size they are - definitely they're not all the same size as each other, I'm a rubbish sewer!
If you've got a booster that you really like the size of, then I reckon you should just copy that!
ok....my dear Mum has told me to buy some of 'these' nappies i have been talking about and she will pay!
The only thing is that i'm not sure really what to get. I have some BBH bamboo fitteds and Magic Alls coming (paying them off).
But I also want to get some tots bots but not sure which ones - either the originals (like the snappi fastening) or bamboozles. I am leaning more towards the cotton originals as i already have some bamboo ones coming? I have found a package of 15 where i can mix whatever styles or just stick to the same one.
What do you guys think?? Would love advice from someone who uses tots bots.....and covers aswell what brand covers?

I love our Tots Bots, we have mostly Cottons and Bamboozles. Here's the low down: Cottons are quicker to dry but bulkier, slightly less absorbent but easily boosted really. Bamboozles are very very trim but as with any bamboo, take ages to dry.
So, in winter I am loving the cottons for drying (but have to use size 1 on the newer bub) whereas the bamboozles are a pain for drying, often have to finish them off in the dryer but the newer bub is wearing size 2's because they're quite a slinky nappy - so good value!
I'll let someone else cover covers. My eyes are hanging out of my head.

I am using sposies - even though i always said i wanted to use cloth, i just never got around to taking the plunge.
I have no idea what to buy, and everytime i look in the stores and on-line there seem to be 1,000,000 nappies, and someone loves them and someone else hates them (IYKWIM).
Am i right in thinking I should buy a few of each to see what we all like and what works best?
I have a sewing machine (:redface:) but it is older than me and it really only gets used to mend things, and I've made a few bibs with it too. Should i contemplate making some MCN - or just buy them to start with?
Liam is a super heavy wetter too.

Hi Lenny! :) What state do you live in? If you live near one of the girls in cloth nappy chatter, we might be able to show you what we have and that can help with confusion a lot.
My bub's around the same age as yours, and at the moment I'm liking Baby BeeHinds, Tots Bots, GreenKids pockets, BumGenius pockets, BerryPlush AIO's. They're all pretty mainstream brands too, you can't really go too wrong with those, and because they're well known, they're pretty easy to on-sell if they don't work for you. Oh, I'm using Motherease Rikki, Tots Bots and Mazalicious covers too.
But yep, you're right, a few of each isn't a bad idea to get a feel for things.
As for sewing, definitely have a crack at it if you want! If you're making fitted nappies, as long as you've got a good cover, it probably doesn't matter if the first few nappies you make miss the mark a little. :P
Hi I am Karla and I am very new to the whole MCN thing. So far I am using Hautes Pockets and I am waiting for my BumGenius' and Happy Heiny's to arrive.
I have read that you aren't meant to use nappy rash creams with the nappies - DS is teething and has a nice red bottom to match his nice red cheeks so I need to use something.
Can someone help with a suggestion - I would prefer something I can get from the supermarket or chemist.

I'm in Langwarrin. I actually went to a BB meet up half because i wanted to meet BG and Mel, and half because i wanted to talk to some of the ladies (like Maz etc) about MCN. Needless to say i'm a bit shy (:redface:) and just sat quietly. I'm pleased i meet some nice people, though!
The only MCNs i've seen IRL are pea-pods and they don't really get rave reviews on BB.
Can you tell me if you buy your MCNs of the net (ebay, WAHMs etc) or from a store? I'd love to find a store that has a few so i can look and compare. I'd love to see them (feel them, touch them) , so if someone can help me out i'd be grateful.

Two questions though.What is the best type to use at night? DS is quite a heavy wetter but I don't want to be changing him all night long.I also don't like the idea of him feeling the wetness.

In Melbourne the only place to get MCN is on the net, although the lovely lady at theweewuns lives not far out of melbourne and you can organise to go and pick them up from her house and have a bit of a look. She has a great range of MCN. There is also darlingsdownunder in melb.

ETA- Some nappies have a stay dry layer, usually microfleece, sometimes suede cloth and other things! These takes moisture away from baby's bum leaving it dry! If you have a nappy without this layer, (for eg might have bamboo,hemp or organic cotton against bum) you can easily cut up microfibre to use as liners. Having said that most of my nappies have a stay dry layer. ;)

3. How many newborn sized covers should I buy?
Some covers don't come in newborn size (e.g. baby beehinds), so should I look at Tot Bots PUL, Bummis PUL, Stacinator Wool, Eenee Snib ... What would you suggest? I don't want to blow budgets on newborn sizes.
Hi Kuraiza! It's a lot to take in at first isn't it!?

Ummm...a month? Perhaps? Maybe 2 months. Chances are your bub will be bigger than 3kg though, Si was 7.9lb which made him 3600g I think. And he was about 4kg by 4 weeks.
It'll also depend on how quickly bub puts on weight, some do it fast, some more slowly.
2. What covers do you recommend for a newborn over flannie or terry flats?
I love Motherease Rikkis. Worth the money. Anything with gussets (extra security around the legs) are great for the first 6 months I reckon.
As an aside, keep in mind that flannelette flats will be MUCH trimmer on your tiny newborn than terry towelling flats - I'd stick to the flannys at first personally.
3. How many newborn sized covers should I buy?
I had 4 I think - 2 eenees snibs and 2 Bummis Original covers. We were out of the snibs at about 3 weeks, and the Originals by about 6. Into the small ME Rikkis at about 4 weeks.
I know what you mean about not blowing the budget on newborn covers. Here are some tips:
- try and find covers with a good weight range - say, 3kg to 6kg.
- Keep in mind whether you're planning on more than one child - that helped me justify some things, knowing that both my boys have gotten use from nappies and they're still good for another or so.
- You can always re-sell some of your covers on buyforbaby (ebay doesn't do the used nappy thing) to reclaim a bit of your money. You could always try looking for nb covers on there too?

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions for wool or fleece covers for nighttimes? It's hard to tell which brands would be good, as they don't have gussetted legs on the wool or fleece covers.
Newborn flats do or don't need any boosters folded in to the origami?
I don't use wool for young babies at night - they don't toss and turn so you can get compression leaks, also, if they explode out of a nappy, it's easier to rinse or wash a PUL cover, as opposed to handwashing wool. I'll sometimes use fleece during the day as bub gets more mobile, but until bub is moving enough to facilitate the evaporation (how wool and fleece work) I stick to PUL.
Others might use wool so young though, pop in to general chatter and ask if you're interested in wool and newborns. :)

Not long to go before my bub's born and I'm trying really hard to get ready so I can bypass ever using disposables. I have just a couple more things to figure out:
I already have a bunch of microfibre boosters that came with my 6 BumGenius V3 plus some microfibre rags I can fold up which I thought might be useful to fold inside a flat nappy at night (of course, not touching baby's skin).
Should I purchase some bamboo boosters in preparation for a newborn, or will it be a little while before I need them (if so, how long)?
Nature's Cradle sells Mother Ease brand bamboo boosters for a great price, can anyone recommend these boosters or otherwise? I emailed nature's cradle a week or 2 back, but I never had a response which worries me. Can anyone recommend this web site? I don't know what the deal is, do they ship from SA to QLD or is it a local-only store?
Nature's Cradle also sell "hourglass fleece liners". Is this a good shape inside flats and/or MCNs like bumgenius? Do I need liners for a newborn? Actually, there's a waiting list for this product so if they're good I might as well go ahead and order them.

Bamboo is great! If you do what everyone else does and change a nappy at every feed, you probably won't need bamboo until the feeds space out a bit more. Perhaps starting at 4 weeks? It's hard to know until bub is here really. :P
Haven't tried the Motherease Bamboo, but like I said, any bamboo is good. I haven't dealt with Nature's Cradle, but some of the others have - perhaps ask in General Chatter. There are nappy shops in Queensland too, Pookey Pockets has a bricks and mortar shop somewhere around Brisbane, and Nurture Nappies are Qland based. Baby BeeHinds sell good bamboo boosters, they're based in NSW, and you can buy through them, they might be stocked in a store, or you might have a demonstrator in your area.
To be honest, I don't bother with liners until bub is on solids. Until then, breastmilk poop is runny enough that it soaks into the nappy, and it just all goes in the machine. No worries. Solids changes things though (I use flushable liners for that 'transition week' where it's all gloop, and then it firms up enough to use fleece - who ever knew we'd be discussing poo in such detail?).
As for the hourglass shape - I've never used an hourglass liner (too lazy to cut anything but rectangles), but it could be good. I have some hourglass boosters that I quite like, for my tummy sleepers. I suppose shape is a preference thing. :)
