we use the itti's -snap ins most nights here (without the mini booster), I only change if it smells when we stir/wake for a feed (2-3am, 5-6am, the up round 8am) or if we poop while up for feed. The other night it was about 10-11 hours - strong wee smell though when it got changed. :p
Yep, folding the BBH down. All the multi-size ones seem huge on her though, even with the front fold or snap down - so much bunching at the crotch!
Bridie soaked her IB snap-in yesterday in three hours. Do they wee less at night, or is she just a heavy wetter?
May be the itti's haven't been washed enough for the absorbancy to be up enough? . They say 3 washes should get them up to full absorbancy. Or you may have a heavy wetter. My DS has eased a little with the wee-ing overnight but still has at least one change, sometimes more. Try using the extra snap in mini-booster you can get for the itti's (red snaps bit) and see if that helps.
Hi Jess, DD3 wees enough to end the drought and can outwee a night nappy. I have to change her every few hours through the day too, so I know the feeling of everything getting soaked through. I need more boosting for her than DD2.
Baby Beehinds are not the best fit for DD3, she often leaks with them and they are not absorbent enough, but they are a nappy that I use simply because I dont have too many small nappies. I just make sure I check her regularly when she is in one.
I use a Mazalicious Licious Lullabyes or an AIO WITH a prefold. I have the cot slightly raised at 1 end so she is laying flat thanks to all the padding on her bot.
Firing up this topic again ;) I just asked on facebook, and I'll probably get the same answer here, but how many nappy pins/snappis will I need if I'm using a combination of flats, MCNs, and 'sposies? Facebook answer (and logic) was that I wouldn't need more than "a few" - so 2 or 3? Is that right? For some reason I had it in my head I'd need about 10 :redface:
I'm not 100% sure I'm getting the MCNs (a friend of my DH offered to give me the ones she used for her kids a while back, but I haven't had contact with her since and I'm not sure I could afford to buy any myself just now) so it may just be the flats and 'sposies.
Also, around how many covers will I need per "size"? Do they have to be specialised nappy covers or can I use something else? I don't know what else, but is there anything else I could use in place? :lol: I think I'm a tad intimidated by the prices at the moment... Wish I knew for certain how big my bub's going to be - it'd make it easier shopping!
You will need only one pin per nappy really (maybe two depending on how you roll with your nappy changes). The 10 (which I feel is slightly more accurate) comes into play when you take into consideration snappis and pins that go walkabouts, the emergency ones you keep in the nappy bag, the ones at the change table, the ones you find in your pocket and the one stuck in the washine machine filter. When babies are newborns, you don't need pins at all, tucking is fine because they don't move much. If you google 'no pins nappy fold' there's a photo tutorial of a good pinless newborn fold.
Ah covers! Fun. For a newborn, I found 4 a good number, 2 in rotation a day, and 2 the next day. :)
When looking at covers, there should be a weight range, so just make sure it covers 3 and 4 kilos roughly. You can get some brands in discounted packs of 4, Motherease Rikkis (which I highly rate, even though they're not the cheapest) come to mind here. If you want to ask more specifically about covers that people recommend, then maybe start a new post, or ask in general chatter, and see what those who've had newies more recently are recommending these days. :) Many come with leg gussets, which ensure a firmer fit around the legs, and I feel those are pretty key for those young baby explosions. :)
TeniBear, I found we needed only one Snappi, as you just take it off the old nappy and put it on the new one - so I also knew where it was! Only problem is if you take off a clothie and put on a sposie and don't have a place where the Snappi lives so you can find it again. So maybe one for the change table and one for the nappy bag, then you're not trying to remember where you left it...
I know what you mean with the covers, it's a bit confusing! I found that I could use 'small' sized Bummis, Thirsties and Motherease Rikki from birth (she was 3.27kg = 7.2 pounds) and she's only just growing out of them now, 6 months later, which is pretty good. I wouldn't bother with getting wool for a NB as they poo so often and it's liquid and leaks really easily, so you have to wash the covers much more often than with an older baby. I have no experience with fleece covers, I just got PUL; I think they are often cheaper? New Age Nappies and Baby Beehinds both have sales on at the moment, maybe check them out.

I have a dozen one size fits all (adjustable) pocket nappies that I was planing to use after the runny new born poo stage and thought I might use disposables for the 1st month or so but after reading your post I think I'll use prefolds instead as I can then use them as boosters in the pocket nappies later. I looked up Nurture Nappies and The Wee Wuns and think I'll get the new born size ones... but I have a question for anyone who can answer it... Do I need to put a cover over top of those prefolds if they are hemp or bamboo? If so I can see Nelle posted that about 4 covers would be enough?
if they're hemp or bamboo you will need covers (can't comment directly on use of pre-folds as I didn't use them) as they absorb liquid but don't prevent it from soaking other things once they're saturated (eventually it does happen).
Yeah you'll need covers for the reason Liz states. :) Sometimes in hot areas like Queensland people don't put covers on their bubs during the day because the moisture evapoarates off bub as they wander around (sort of similar to wool covers), but for a newie that doesn't move that's not a good idea.

My DS is 19 months old, and I am thinking of giving cloth a go for the first time. He is my 4th (and most likely last) baby, so I don't want to spend a fortune.
Have seen these on Ebay, are they likely to be rubbish because they are so cheap?Do you think I will need some kind of booster, especially for overnight as he sleeps approx. 12 hours.

ok, at risk of repeating a question (i started reading the thread but only made it to page 6 or 7...) what brands are recommended? my bubs is most likely going to look like a mini buddha but quite long if he takes after DF, a long skinny thing with no bum if he takes after me... i am mainly looking for nappies that are easy to use cos DF is a newbie to nappy changing entirely let alone figuring out cloth nappies! he still struggles to get the dog in her harness correctly after more than 2 years practice....
i so far have 2 itti bittis (1xAIO, 1xsnap-in) and 3 very baby AI2s. just ordered a bambam fitted nappy to try as well as thirsties duo adn a bbh pul cover.
SO: best nappies for a lil buddha baby?
best nappies for a skinny thing with no bum?
OR: something that will fit both maybe? (this might be wishful thinking)
AND: at least 1 brand thats reasonably easy to use

I would recommend side snappers in that situation cmarfol. They are more adjustable, so if you have a baby with a bigger bottom and smaller legs you can adjust the snaps to suit and visa versa. DD3 has a tiny bum and bigger legs so her leg holes are looser than her waist.

cmarfol I had a 4kg kiddo and he was looong and skinny but big. I loved spunky butts and tots bots that did up with a snappy - much more easily adjustable than being stuck with snap settings IYKWIM? They are fitteds but i found them better for NB (IMO only of course).

Just having a look there seems to be some real experts putting in their tips here, so I think this is the best place to put out my questions. I've asked a few times but seem to get really varied answers. So here goes.
We are having bub number 2. I am wanting to go full time MCN's but am also happy to use sposies for the first month or so till bub is big enough to fit into a OSFM. I have done quite a bit of looking round but I find myself reall daunted by how many options there are. So far Blueberry minkee OSFM pockets have been my favourite. I need convenience as I'm goign to be studying full time with 2 little ones so its a big priority that I don't spend 8 hours a day folding nappies lol. What I'm looking for:
Super convenience.
OSFM.
Narrow crotch (DS is narrow and as he was 6.1 pounds born I'm not expecting a giant this time either)
Durability. Money is a big issue for us so these nappies better last or DF will ring my neck lol kidding
Snaps not velco as I understand these last longer.
And anything else that is going to make my life easier basically.

I have DS to test nappies on thank God but I just feel like time is going so fast and I don't want to be 39 weeks pregnant and trying to buy nappies, plus we are hoping that friends and family will help us out with fluffy pressies so the sooner the better on the decision making side of things.

Just my 2c's worth! I was fixed on OSFM to get the best value for money out of my nappies. I since changed to sized nappies and have never looked back. The nappy i use the most is a Medium ittibitti, (followed by CK Auriel and wildchild sidesaddle.) The IB's have fitted my daughters from about 8 weeks until almost toilet trained. I did need a few large ones but not many. I have lots of others in the stash but they are my main 'workhorse' nappy. If you don't want to spend time folding then the AIO is great as there is nothing to fold/stuff/snap. They are cheaper than OSFM and i 'think' they have worked out more economical for us in the longrun. (i havn't done the sums, but it's not that much different) I wouldn't buy smalls if $$ is an issue as they don't fit for very long. Although my first was a little-un and was in them for ages, my second was average and fitted the smalls for about 2 months. i like that all my kids clothes fit over IB's as they are such a trim nappy. I have had friends with big bubs who don't like them at all though, they have issues with plumbers crack. ;)
I have a couple of blueberries' and they are great but i find the fit is not as good as a sized nappy. And i don't like the wide crotch. To be honest i got sick of stuffing them! I know a lot of mum's don't mind pockets, but i won't buy another one, maybe i'm just lazy. :p

we don't own ANY AIO's - i thought about the drying time, the fact we live in an area prone to crummy weather, and figured i'd need toooooo many of them to be able to use them full time and have a couple of days each to dry them. we have mostly AI2's and pockets

as i mentioned in your other thread, our preferences are Widdlewuns (side snappers, can be hard to get) CGR (front snap, can also be hard to get), bonnibuns (front snap pocket), trissy tots (front snap AI2), bcheeks (front snap pocket). have a few auriels and love them, but they are also very hard to get lol
do you know anyone nearby that uses cloth so you could test fit with your kidlet?
i have a strong preference for snaps over velcro closure - E undoes the velcro all the time.
I can't remember what I first started DS on - I snapped up a whole lot, I do know one of them would have been Green Kids pockets, that was my first fluffy mail, shortly followed by cushie tushies and some motherease fitteds. So I had some pockets, AI2's and fitteds. The fitteds weren't absorbent enough for him, the cushie tushies were absolute crap (but I did buy them off ebay) and my Green Kids I loved, but he developed a reaction to suedecloth after a year of using them, so now I avoid anything with suedecloth as the inner material. I only buy it if its microfleece now.
Yep, they do sound similar BG... that's a good point about the AIO & drying time. Part of the reason I have taken so long to get to it is I don't keep on top of washing very well... so maybe something that is a bit quicker drying would be better.
So how do the AI2's work? If I have it right they have a bit that snaps on top? or inside? How are they different to pockets?
with a pocket nappy, you have the shell, and the material that is against bubs skin, and then you stuff the absorbant materials in between these two layers. the outers dry relatively quickly, and you can have extra boosting so you can use the shell wash it, let it dry (some of mine dry within hours in the right conditions, and even if that boosting isn't dry, you can use another set. you can essentially use anything to boost, provided it fits in the pocket
with an AI2, the inners are generally tailored for the nappy, and like you mentioned, they snap in. we have added boosting to some of our nappies as DD has times that she is peeing like nothing else, but when you put the nappy on them, you have to make sure it's all laid in properly. much more painful to do. thankfully it's only been the Ittis we've had to boost more, everything else seems to have enough - so we just keep the Ittis to use at home.
with either system though, you have to make sure, if you've boosted extra, that you still get a good fit around the legs - if you don't ahve a good fit, you will end up with leakages no matter how much you've stuffed them with boosting
Ittis aren't that great for heavy wetters, DS got to the stage where he could blow it out with one wee.. LOL
i agree mel - they look like they have ample boosing, but not really enough IMO. we add a second trifold (got extra when we bought them) and they seem to be still comfy for her (she doesn't whinge) and keep her dry. we only use them at home though as a spare nappy. i don't send them when she goes to mum's or anything. we have three larges so i figure we may as well use them

I am thinking of getting a few mcn but want some value for money as i dont have much extra cash these days... anywho I have looked at the itti site and have seen they have 6 nappies for $165 SIO PK is a weed so think he will last in midium until TT ( 5.6 kgs at 14 weeks ) so he wont quite fit into them just yet but he will grow into them soon, but dont know if this is a good deal or not, is there any other brand I should look at, Its all very confusing lol...
If i buy SIO will i need extra bosters or do they come with all they need ? or would I be better of with AIO washing I have to do every day any way so thats not a issue but this crappy melbourne weather might be... I have a dyer can I dry them it that...
I don't need any extra boosters with my itti's. I like the SIO's better than the AIO's but everyone is different. I find them more absorbent and easier to dry. If you need to you can just check the inserts in the dryer with the snap in ones.
I haven't bought nappies in a couple of years, but last time i bought itti's the bulk packs were a bit cheaper than that and the best deal around. I guess prices have gone up?!
The mediums lasted my first DD until TT, but DD2 was a bit bigger and needed a few L's, but the M are definitely a value buy for the size.
If i had $165 to spend and i had no nappies, i'd get SIO ittis. :)

we only have three large for E now, and a lot of other nappies that take priority as faves, but they are a great work horse nappy

so..out of AIOs, AI2s or pockets, which have you all found the easiest. obviously all in one sounds great,but is it more practical to have an AI2 with a clip in liner thingy that you just replace. rather than washing the whole nappy. is that how it even works lol.

I've used pockets and AI2s and I bought extra boosters for both. Early on I preferred pockets - greenkids as my preferred brand - one size fits most too. But they were velcro closing so not so good after awhile - DS can undo it now. Still have these as back up nappies. Some of the pockets can be a bit snug to try and get your hand in to stuff too so that is something to be aware of.:
I went over to AI2s (or snap-ins) with Itti bittis and their sized nappies and preferred these. I can re-use the outers in these if it's just wet but usually I don't bother. Can't re-use the outers if they're pooped on. But with the extra boosters I find that when I wash I just put a dry booster set in when the outer is dry and let the wet boosters dry for a bit longer (I have about 10 extra booster sets to nappies with the ittis)
IF I was going to start clothing it again from scratch, I would probably do something similar or try the itti bitti tuttos. I've just bought a couple of these with a couple of extra boosters to see how they go - so far going well. They're also a one size fits most. They're snap ins still too. So these would probably last without you "having" to buy more. (Be WARNED - MCNs are very addictive!!!)
I would try and see if there's someone near you who can let you try a couple of different brands to check fit around legs and tummy - these are important. If that's not possible I'd probably only by one or two of a brand in a AI2 type nappy and check the fit around the legs particularly.
If you don't want to buy nappies too often for sizing I'd go with a OSFM (like the tuttos or greenkids). However, a lot of people prefer the sized nappies - problem here is not everyone uses the same sizing - check out rise and weight for these. (rise is measured from back of plumbers crack to bellybutton - I think - somewhere in the nappy section there's info on this)

i like snap ins because they dry quicker than an all-in-one due to coming apart (so not as many layers to dry). I always wash the whole nappy each time, cover + booster inners.:
I think my bub was starting to fit into medium nappies around 3-4 months. I prefer sized nappies because i reckon the OSFM never really fit little bubs.
I am happy to get second hand nappies so save money this way. It's also a good way to try a few different types, and now i know what i like i have bought some new ones during the sales.
I like itti bitti snap ins, and also BBH pockets. The 2 companies size differently with BBH being a larger fit.- So my bub can now wear medium or large ittis but can only wear medium BBHs.

Have you guys found this style good for small bubs? Or are fitteds better for this age? At what age do bubs usually start to suit SIO's?
Hey hope. W has one d'lish... He is tall and skinny, 4 weeks old and is on the 2nd snaps (so not the smallest setting) I love it but not sure it will fit for long. It's very gorgeous tho!
Hi hope :) about 2 years ago, ittis formed the bulk of my stash. They are good until bubs becomes a heavy wetter, usually as they get older. When DS was about 2, he could blow it out with one wee. We also got horrid wing droop so switched to side snapping nappies (which is my stash now for my 2 older girls)
I have a small itti here and my youngest is nearly 3 weeks old and it's still too big for her around her legs. Waist wise and rise wise it fits fine, just not her legs.
I use a mixture of ai2's and flats for the older 2 girls, and a mixture of fitteds and ai2's for the baby. I think it's personal preference which is better, I'm not a fan of pockets as most these days are lined with suedecloth (which gives us nappy rash) plus I got sick of stuffing them. It's easier to snap an insert into a shell than to stuff a pocket - and these days - I'll take the easy way out lol
Would you bother with MCNs for only 6 months?
I've been flip flopping on the question of cloth nappies a few times throughout this pregnancy and after having settled on all disposables a couple of months ago, a disapproving look from my mother-in-law this weekend has prompted me to reconsider yet again. (Probably not the best motivator I know.) I'm expecting baby no 1 in August (Melbourne winter.) I'm planning to take 6 months off work after the birth but then back to work full time with a combination of child care & nanny most likely. I'm sure some of you will say that's no reason to stop using cloth nappies but at the moment I barely manage to keep my own clothes laundered on time let alone adding caring for a baby and sleepless nights, so I don't think it's realistic to assume I'll keep using cloth regularly after 6 months. Cost is not a big motivator for me either - we can afford disposables and I don't think I'd be restrained enough in my purchases to come out very cheaply from a MCN perspective (there are so many gorgeous designs out there to try.) I'm more interested in just finding what works best on balance from a comfort, nappy rash, explosion minimization and convenience perspective while not being too big a hassle.
So would you bother even trying cloth in my situation? I figure it won't hurt to get a stack of prefolds and a few covers. At least I can use the prefolds as spit rags etc even if I don't stick with the cloth nappy thing. Then maybe just a couple of AIOs/pockets/AI2s to experiment with... (although I can see that being a slippery slope.) Should I just buy the cheapest prefolds I can find or are some brands better than others?
The first 6 months (pre baby eating solids) is the best, funnest time for cloth nappies. I love fitted nappies with a cover on young babies. easier than prefolds and they seem to contain poo-splosions better than aios or disposables. especially if you are only thinking of doing it for a short term, with a newborn, go for sized nappies (newborn/small) rather than osfm.

Now I'm wondering about a few things:
1. When is the best time to order a starter kit of cloth nappies? Is it too early to do it now? Should I wait until I'm 8-9 months or something?
2. What's brand/type is best for a newb like myself? There's a home business (I think) advertised on the main BB site a lady who sells MCNs and starter kits, I was thinking to just go with that? I'm happy to support smaller businesses as long as their products are good.
3. How does it work, exactly? My impression so far is that you get liners for the nappies so the poop and pee doesn't go on the actual nappy but on the liner and you throw the liner away? Then you wash the nappies if they're soiled? If this is the case what if the nappies themselves are fine not soiled at all do you still need to wash them after every single use? Is there such thing as reusable liners? If not then wouldn't buying all those liners still be nearly as expensive as using disposable nappies in the long run?
4. How do you deal with negative silly comments about MCNs? Like "eeeew why would you use MCNs they're GROSS!" etc? I've only had one such comment so far as I've only told a couple people I want to use MCNs but I anticipate many more when people see me using MCNs!
I'm sorry for the newb questions, especially if they've been answered before, I just don't have the patience for going through past pages/threads looking for the answers :o.
1. When you buy the other baby things, buy the nappies. It depends on you. I bought nappies at about 5m pg, just before we bought the nursery furniture (from memory). That was just newborn nappies, I bought bigger ones a few months later when I really got into nappies.
2. I went for nappies you fold but not pin because I like making up nappies. But I also liked to try other ones - I had bamboo nappies for night time, AIO/AI2s made up for days out etc. Why not get a mixed starter kit for newborn and figure out what you like for the next stage?
3. Depends on the nappy. Some you have to shake the poo off before you wash, others have fleece liners so you wash the liner as well as the nappy and cover, others use throwaway liners that you can flush. Flushable liners were better for DH, but I didn't always remember to buy them so I preferred fleece ones. (I would have forgotten to buy nappies at all if I didn't have cloth, it was essential to my disorganised sanity!)
4. Why would you bag up poo and throw it away into a landfill and years later when archaeologists dig out our remains, looking for signs of culture, find your baby's dirty nappy? Ewwwwwwwwww. That's just wrong (and that statement converted a room of 15yo girls to considering cloth for when they did, eventually, have babies. Cloth nappies also look cute on (I think I uploaded a pic of Liebs in a cloth nappy many years ago to BB). Plus, in Australia, it is illegal not to flush poo so you're supposed to do it with disposable nappies too. Another bonus was when Liebs was in nappies, I was studying Chemistry at Uni. I could do all the ammonia-based practicals without a problem as I was very desensitised to the smell (which when you wash every 2-3 days is not an issue at all except for bending down at the washing machine to unload the bucket). I am re-sensitised now, bad luck me for ammonia-based work.
Dot face, if you have a look at the first couple of pages of this thread Nelle has posted some great info. It's a bit old, but the basis is still the same.
1. For me, nappies can be exxie so with DS I just bought some when I could. Instead of products/nappies every grocery shop, I bought an MCN. I am not a fan of having only one type of nappy in your stash (ie all from one maker). Different nappies work great for some and dreadfully for others. Having all of one kind would suck if they all didn't work for you. A few different kinds at least lets you work out what is best for you a bit cheaper.
There are a few second hand MCN pages on FB that can be good for a bargain, and there is also a nappy sale thread in here.
2. Ultimately All-in-ones are the easiest for a newb, but they aren't necessarily the best for NB poo. I second Nelle and many others in saying that fitteds with a cover are the best for NBs, however it's been a while so I couldn't recommend any currently.
3. I have only ever used a fleece liner for times when I need a heavier duty bum cream. I know others swear by them, but I've never really needed them. Fleece liners you wash with your nappies. The liner basically just protects the nappy and 'should' aim to draw moisture away from the skin. The nappy will always be wet and yes needs to be washed. However you can get All-in-2 nappies where the absorbent bit snaps out and if the shell isn't dirty you just snap a new absorbent bit in.
4. Smile and wave girlfriend ;)...pretty much like any parenting decision you make, someone will have an objection. Fluff on little bums is cute. Some people love it when they see it, and some can't get past it.
I agree with Kim - I'd try a few different brands and options. I liked some AIO nb nappies (Rumparooz and Cheeky Butts minis), but others didn't work for DD2 at all. So glad I only got a couple of each to try! Fitteds with covers are always good, I alternate with them still. I started with some secondhand and some new.
When I remember to buy them, I use flushable liners. I'd wait until your baby is well and truly on solid food though, before that you still need to rinse the nappy anyway because bf poos are so liquid.
Good luck! There's no need to stock up on enough to get you to toilet training right now. Start with the smaller nb sized nappies and go from there.
