i found shopping for a nappy bag, that would fit MCN supplies, harder than i thought.
i ended up taking the contents of my then current "make do" bag, with me, into shops that sold nappy bags, and having a "trial run" on the floor of the shop - to make sure it WOULD fit what i needed it to fit.
i ended up buying a Fisher PRice "bowling bag" style nappy bag, at baby target - around $55 i think. The straps were not long enough to hang over the pram. but the ones that had the long straps, i didn't like the insides of them. hard to find EVERYTHING you want, in ONE bag i found.
i already was using an old knapsack e.g open the zipper and you have one black hole - so everytime i wanted ANYTHIGN in that bag, i had to take ENTIRE contents out, to find the one thing i needed! didn't want to get another bag like that.
i soon discovered with a newborn, you usually only have ONE hand free to get what you need. SO bags where you can open them entirely with one hand, are very good.
i soon discovered i was after COMPARTMENTS, so i could open one area, see what is in the bag easily, and have things separated, e.g separate spot for the wetbag with the used nappies in it, separate spot for the clean nappies. Slot for water bottle to stand up in. SOme zippered pockets to keep tiny things in.
a slot for the portable nappy change mat (there are many places where you will be glad you have your own clean thing to cahnge your baby on. i got an $8 change mat at target that has two mesh pockets at one end, the right size to slot a baby wipes packet in, so you always have the wipes with your mat - handy. It has a little zip on the outer, i stick tiny things there, like a snappi, tissue travel pack, the hand sanitiser tiny bottle.
in the newborn stage, you change more often, so need to take more change of nappies with you. Plus need a good size wetbag. I think the baby beehinds wetbag ($15) is a good size for the nb stage. it has a loop and a sturdy zip too, great workhorse. Get two, so one is in use, one is in the wash.
what i packed in the nb nappy bag for outings
- five clean nappy combos e.g five fitteds in five covers, or five prefolds in five covers, microfleece liners laid inisde ready to go
- large wetbag
- spare bibs, spare clothing
- organic baby sunscreen, sunhat, muslin wrap,
- sample sized nappy rash cream satchets
- cloth breastpads for me, spare t-shirt for me
- water bottle for me
- flat nappy for mop-ups
- portable change mat with wipes inside
- bottle of hand sanitisier for when i had to change her outside (no taps, e.g side of the road, at the beach)
- tissues
- many people carry cloth wipes as well, i didn't manage that bit.
i had a spare nappy bag always left in the car as well, in an opshop nappy bag
