Swim nappies - do they work?

    Hi everyone,

We're off to Thailand at the end of the year with our 8mo DD, and plan to do a bit of swimming, so we're on the look out for swim nappies.

I have been doing a bit of research into swim nappies, but I am a little skeptical on how - and if - they work. I had a look at the speedo ones today, and they just looked like normal bathers with a plastic insert - the lady assured me it would absorb everything, but I just don't get how a swim nappy can absorb number 1's and 2's, without absorbing half the pool!? Do swim nappies actually absorb wee's, or does it just run out of the nappy unnoticed given the large body of water the baby is immersed in at the time? And, yes this next question is getting a little TMI, but I just have to ask sorry what happens when - heaven forbid - the baby lets loose with a number 2 in the pool? Does it stay in the nappy or come out the side?

What is the best brand to get re absorbancy? I have noticed people mentioning the Imse Vimse, Monkey Doodlez, Splashabout, Bambino Mio - which one is best in terms of absorbancy?

    Thanks for your help everyone!

Sorry - one more thing - is there an actual store (rather than online stores) that I can check these nappies out at? I also saw someone mentioned floaties aqua nappies - where do you get those from?

    Thanks again!

Hey Chuppy, I just bought a couple of swim nappies last week as I took DS in the pool for the first time. I believe that swim nappies are not meant to absorb wees, all they are meant to do is contain the poos. The chlorine in the pool takes care of the wee.

I got a pair of Zoggs from the retail shop at the local swimming pool. Not sure where you are but if you are in Perth, Beatty Park have them. Zoggs are "one-size" from 3months to 2 years. I wasn't sure if they would fit my DS as he is only little for 3 months of age but they fit perfectly. I think them being adjustable with velcro and studs helped get it tight around his legs.

I also got a Happy Nappy which I haven't tried yet but it looks like it will fit him snuggly as the elastic around the legs and waist is quite firm. This one is a size small, once he grows out of it that's it.

I had to buy these because the Huggies disposable swim nappies are too big for him and they don't come in a size smaller than 7kg. So you could also try the Huggies, not sure what they are like though.

I think if a poo escapes you are meant to get out of the pool straight away and change your bubba. Not sure what they do with the poo in the pool, haven't seen it happen yet!

    HTH.

Swim nappies are really only to contain no 2s. They don't do anything for wees. You can get them from lots of places. Kmart, Target, Big W etc have some, and you can get some nicer looking ones from many of the cloth nappy online stores. Or you can use the Huggies disposable ones, which can actually be reused a few times as long as there are no no 2s and you rinse them after use.

I use a monkey doodlez swim nappy and they only contain poo, wee just goes straight through but i think that is what happens with all swim nappies, including disposables.

Even if they dont work most resort pools wont let your child swim without them... As your DD is 8 mths they will hold in her Number 2's but like everyone has said nat many hold in the wee... So keep in mind that if she gets a upset tummy and her 2's become like 1's then it too could leak out....

Only know as when DS was 6 weeks we took him for a swim ( thank goodness at a river ) anyway you know know how runny BF bubs are.... Lets just say the fish though all there christmas'a had come at once... lol plus DS was a vomiter .... sorry TMI....

Thanks everyone!! I think we may be avoiding the baby pool - having your own baby wee all over you is one thing - swimming in the wee of other babies is another thing entirely! Will just have to make sure she doesn't get an upset stomach whilst we are there. How many do I need? Would one be enough, or is it best to have a few so one can dry out whilst the other is worn?

Also - completely unrelated to nappies - does anyone know if you can buy western brand baby food in Thailand?? We won the holiday to Thailand, and are rapidly discovering it is much harder to travel with a baby than just as a couple!!

Chuppy why do you thing baby pools are so much warmer than any other pool LOL...

I would have no idea if you can buy baby food over there maybe email the hotel...

With baby nappys I have always used the dispoisables and find that unless they did a poo in them they could be rinced out and dried to use again a few more times...

But with the others I guess I would buy at least two so like you said you can dry one while the other is been used...
