Still not really understanding what i woud need MCN wise...

Im looking into MCN for when bubs comes around and im still not totally understanding what i need to start with like can newborns go straight to mcns? or do they start with sposies? How many do i need and what brands? Do you need night ones or are they just for heavy wetters?

buying what nappies i have bought i have found that i would have been best to buy one size fits all or most saving me loads of cash rather than small medium and large types. And buy extra boosters to boost them up for night time use too if buying one size fits all. I am fairly new to mcn's only using for 6 months full time and preggers so will be using these nappies again.

My plain of attack is to use terry flats for a few weeks till new born is large enough aprox 4 kilo in weight to go to baby beehind one size fits all nappies. I have also got a bout 8 new born nappies just to help out of the magicals they have the water proof protector on them for night for newborns. Mind you new borns poop so much and wee heaps they u change them so often so i probably didnt need to invest in these.

save your $$$ buy mostly one size fits all if i was you. The baby beehind site has LOADS of info on how many you need and stuff like that google them

Ok, so for the first 3 weeks or so, bub will be pretty tiny for shaped MCN. You can buy newborn, but I found them a lot of money for only a few weeks of use. we used Pre-fold nappies, with gorgeous wool covers for the first month. Pre-folds require a little bit of folding, then a snappy and a cover. Its really easy and they dry quickly too. A pack of 12 would be heaps.

Then once bub is a little bigger, you can put them in MCN size small- you can get small fitted nappies and then keep using the same cover from the pre-folds, or you could get All in ones (Baby-beehinds MagicAlls in small would be perfect).

I personally bought 14 Baby-Beehinds one-size-fits all in bamboo as well as some MagicAlls in small and medium and that's what I am still using now (not the small though lol)...so thats 6 months so far. The prefolds I haven't touched since, but I passed them onto another new mummy, so they're getting used anyway.

hopefully one of the expert girls will pop in but I'll tell you what I have found worked best. Nate's been in cloth since the day he was born.

I know a lot of the girls use prefolds and a cover, or flannie flats and a cover. They don't need heaps of absorbancy as you change them so often, but thy do need to hold in that runny poo, that's why a good fitting cover for newborns is invaluable.

I used fitteds with Nate and covers for the first while. So I had one layer of elastic on the fitted and one on the cover (great for pootainment). They come in OSFA and sized. My faves are the Spunky Buts fitteds. I also have BBHs in hemp and bamboo. They fit much better now he's a bit bigger. Cute Tooshies fit well when they're little too.

When they are really little, sized or flannie flats seem to work best as the OSFA are just too big. Though Nate was big (9lb) he was still to small for OFSA for a few weeks.

Others use pockets and AIOs for tiny babies but for me they just weren't reliable enough to hold the poo in as their little legs were too small. Once he put on a bit of weight and grew a bit the pockets like Happy Heinies and BumGs were (are) great.

We have only started use a true night nappy in the last month or so, so initially no I don't think you should need to worry about them. That said I never ever had to buy one for Darcy as a boosted BBH with cover was fine.

I wish I had waited beyond the fitteds to see Nate's shape as different nappies suit different kids.
Aslo think about 12 nappies per day for the first little while and wrk out how often you want to wash. Don't forget about drying time.

For my newborn I have bought prefolds which are about $8-$10 each and I have bought some covers with leg gussets to go over them, so not a huge outlay given that I can also use the same prefolds (bamboo) as boosters and inserts in DD's nappies and in baby to be's MCNs.

I found that terry flats worked the best, along with a BBH PUL cover. To begin with we only had 3 covers in the small size and we managed with that, although I think that I'll be getting a couple of extra small covers for this bub. In fact, we didn't put DD into another type of nappy till she was a wrigglebot at around 9months, and it was just too hard to get her to lie still long enough. The only time I ever had a problem with poo-containment, was a one-off day when she was is sposie for some reason - never had an issue with her leaking anything in the terry flats.
