1 week old with wind at night

Our DD is just over 1 week old and BF'ing and she will feed for 20-30 minutes till she is "milk drunk" (what we call it anyway) and then she'll sleep for a good 4 or 5 hours. I'm having to wake her majority of the times to feed or I think she'd sleep longer.

Anyway, during the day she is good. I can get a few good burps + many farts out of her the majority of the time but during her night feeds it seems she is having an issue. We've been unable to string together two night feeds without at least one resulting in her being restless and crying for hours, pretty much until her next feed. I've tried feeding her more and it does not appear to be a hunger issue, she is pulling her legs right up and belly is going tight so wind is what i'm suspecting. Sometimes she is letting out wind whilst other times nothing happens. She may pass wind or burp and gives her a minute or two relief but then she'll suddenly wake with a jolt and start screaming, like she has belly pain.

I have bought some Infacol but it says only from 4 weeks of age so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest something to help?? Could it be that her night feeds she is not 100% awake so not getting the wind up as easily as during the day?? If so how I can I help more, I feel helpless when she is crying like that and in obvious discomfort and I cannot help her.

I would try Brauer's Colic Relief - 1ml every half hour to begin with, then every 4 hours if needed. It is safe for newborns, and has no side-effects, and best of all, you can buy it from health food stores and many pharmacies. You can also try tilting her cot slightly, so her feet are a tad lower than her head - this seems to be beneficial too.

If you need any extra help, and you live near Melbourne, drop in to the centre on a Tuesday or Thursday for a chat with Jocelyn or myself - we're both Naturopaths, and have many tools up our sleeves for safe and effective colic relief!

    All the best,

    xxx

snowchickie79- i brought the infants friend for DD. It can be used from birth... It saus on the bottle that it relieves the colic and wind in the bowel, helps allay restlessness and irritation caused by teething, will help keep the bowel regular, will produce natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from colic. i found it very helpful for my DD.

Also a small amount of cooled boiled water helps DD. Like mentioned feeding more upright, having the cot/basinette raised slightly.

We had a very windy newborn.. tried brauers, infants friend, infacol... they helped to a degree, but we still found ourselves spending the wee hrs of the morning massaging her tummy, pumping her legs (like a bicycle) until she let rip. DH also spent a few nights up on the xbox ( such a sacrifice LOL ) whilst keeping an eye on her sleeping on her tummy propped up over a cushion. At least it meant I could get some sleep You've just gotta do what works in those early days! It's hard seeing the poor little things in pain like that.. just have to try and help move that wind.

Another thing you could do is let her sleep on her tummy on your chest. That can be a bit more comfortable for them when they have wind pains. Perhaps you could strap her to you in a hugabub or something.. then you could drift off too in a rocking chair or something.

Hope you find some relief soon.

IKWYM about letting them rip... My little princess has started kicking about alot especially when i give her no nappy time (she love it) i think all the kicking helps her get the wind out... She lets go like a big baked-bean eating man. YUK... Its wrong seeing my princess do such loud smelly fluffs...

hehe.. i know.. it's amazing how much gas they can have for such little people! I used to joke that if I let go of her she'd fly around the room LOL.
