My son is on 20 mg of Losec twice daily and hes been on Losec for a few months, hes just gone 6 months. He also used to take lots of other things such as a probiotic,Lactulose syrup for constipation, teething powder. On Friday night he got a terrible vomiting bug.As he was getting the Losec in pear puree we had to stop his medication as hes just started drinking proberly again and wouldn't have been able to stomach the pear puree. The thing is since he stopped everything his sleeping at night has improved.Hes much easier to settle also when he does wake. The only thing I've noticed is that he is burping more and he gets a sour face when he does so hes getting some heartburn. But I don't know if its enough to warrant putting him back on such a large does of Losec as I do worry about the side effects of it.Hes seems happy enough too.i was thinking of trying maybe some gaviscon for the heartburn.Has anyone had anything similar happen I would appreciate any advice.I think as well he may be still recovering from the vomiting bug as he was really bad ended up bringing him to the hospital.
That does sound like a large dose. My son is on 15mg a day and he is 5 months. If you are finding that he is better without losec I would keep him off it and try mylanta/gaviscon. Or have you tried stomach calm (brauer). Its a natual product from the chemist. It seems to help my son. If it were me I keep my little one off the losec and if stomach calm, gaviscon wasnt helping then i would introduce a smaller amount of losec again.
Good Luck. I hope your little boy gets better soon.
The medication may take a couple of days to fully get out of the system, so what you may have been seeing is an improvement off one of the meds, or just because he wasn't eating (and eating is causing the reflux)
I would have to agree with the other posters that 40mg is way, way too high for a 6 month old. We see a specialist gastro dr and she is hesitant to put my 4 year old on 30mg. Unless he is on it because of inflammation or gastritis (as shown on an endoscopy) I think your dr has made a mistake with dosing.
I would try and get the dose reduced to 20mg (which is an adult dose by the way) you may find an improvement in the fact that the losec is working, but because the dose isn't so high not getting so many side effects like sore tummy, etc...
