Hi. DS2 (5 months tomorrow) has just been put on losec for a little while to help him get through a new bout of reflux now he's started rolling... we thought it was all going much better and mylanta was helping enough, but then he started rolling and it got worse again with him not settling well during the day and having to have multiple changes of clothes again... he's not a classically screaming reflux kid but we do hear him swallowing it back down again and when he chucks it's not til about 2 hours after a feed and then you see the acid coming up with the bits of 'cottage cheese' in it...
So GP put him on a half tablet of losec once a day for the next 2 weeks to try to 'break the cycle' he's in at the minute... but I just read the fact sheet about it on the net and the list of side effects worried me somewhat... how do i know if he's having dizziness or nausea etc... and changes to sleeping habits are listed as a serious side effect which needs to be mentioned to the doctor urgently... in some of the other threads on here that one seems to be common... little ones being more wakeful... What have others experienced with the side effects and when should I be worried?
You'll know if your little one isn't right. DD has been on losec for months now - we're slowly weaning her off, tried to take her off but her reflux came back.
She didn't suffer any side effects at all. Just keep an eye on him, and report anything you're not happy about to your Dr.
thanks for that, will do. Dr said to try him on rice cereal seeing as he's not far off solids anyway... he is like his brother, however and won't have a bar of them... DS1 was 7 months before he wanted them... I've heard reflux babies can have a really sensitive gagging reflex too... is this the case for your DD? Anyone else found it a problem?
I found that giving DD rice cereal made the reflux worse, so try it by all means but keep an eye on that too. I know a few other mums on here said the same thing. It seems that health professionals think that giving babies solids is the answer to everything (I'm a little annoyed at myself for trying DD on solids so early at the recommendation of our paed - and it made things worse).
Yes, Missy also has a very sensitive gag reflex. We're doing BLS and she gags all the time on stuff. Scary!! But not a problem, babies in general have their gag reflex more towards the front of their tongues - it's their bodies way of coping with foreign objects going in their mouth. The gag reflex moves back over time.
Hi, my baby is wakeful - but I think its the reflux that causes that, not the losec. My DD is a shocking sleeper and I think it is because she got herself into horrendous habits and now has pain association with sleep. She has been on zantac since 3weeks - 4months and losec ever since. She has just turned 1 and I have been told by the paed she will prob be on it till she is at least 2. The benefits of being on it far outweigh the side effects for my DD as she would not eat or drink and would have a burnt out osopheagus? So its important to talk to your doc if you are concerned. For us Losec has been a fantastic drug - I hate her being on meds for so long but it is much better than failing to thrive!!!
