Questions about Losec (Suspension) and Thickeners (FF baby)
Hi All,
Thanks for all the help re my other Reflux thread. It's been a really difficult time!
Ari saw a Dr on Thurs and last night we got her Losec suspension. She's on the minimum dose (2.5ml) once a day to start off - Dr said dose will go up as she starts to gain weight.
I tried to give it to her yesterday and she HATES the taste. Spits it all out. It doesn't taste too bad to me (licked a bit of my finger), but she doesn't like it.
My only options are to stick the syringe in her mouth as far as possible and squirt (and try not to get it down her windpipe) or mix it with her formula (which I did this morning - she drank it, but still didn't like the taste).
Will it still take effect if I mix it with her formula? I can't seem to find an answer to this one.
Also - the thickener. We're using a seperate Karicare thickener which has worked to cut down the vomiting (still get one or two big projectile a day) - but it's been binding her up! Argh! She's very close to being constipated so we've cut down on the thickener (from 1/2 the scoop to a 1/4), but I have read that the Losec works best when the baby is also having a thickener, is this true?
Thanks for putting up with all my questions...I just want to see my baby looking calm and relaxed and without a horrible frown on her face or screaming all the time. :-(
Although I am BF'ing DD2 is on Losec (compunded version) eqivalent of an adult dosage (20mg) and also on Gaviscon which is a thickener, I do find that the combo does make a big difference.
If you do mix it with the milk, can you give her just a small amount of milk with the Losec in it first, mix it in a small medicine cup with some premixed formula (jsut some directly from the bottle), perhaps try using a neurofen syringe to administer it, because you can get 5ml in it and it seems to be successful with quite a few people I know (as well as us), that way you know she is getting the full dosage and then the rest of her formula with the thickener in it.
Oh and if you ever need to give her pain meds don't give her Neurofen, just Panadol, unless you really have to because Neurofen plays havoc with DD2's reflux.
When DS1 had it I would just syring into his mouth into his cheek or down his throat, it is not the best tasting thing and he fought with me the whole time he was on it 5 weeks till 7 and 1/2 months.
I did get our 2nd and bottles after flavoured, the pharmacist looked into what he could mix with it he was restricted with what he could add due the PH of things but in the end added cocanut and pineapple and it tasted slightly better. (baby pina colada LOL)
Its hard and upsetting to get them to take it but it does help them
