    Reflux/medication

My DS 1 suffered with reflux till he was 2 yrs old. He was on Zoton. DS 2 is 9 weeks today and has been on losec syrup 5mg x 2 per day since about 4 weeks. About 2 wks ago his symptoms seemed to be coming back so I increased his dose to 7.5mg x2 per day. Things settled down again. Now over the last 3 or 4 days the symptoms seems to be coming back, wanting to feed all the time, cat napping during the day (even though he goes down well, he now wakes within 20 mins), thrusting his tongue, wincing in 'pain'.

Anyhow, I've now put him upto 10mg x 2 per day of losec and am giving him gaviscon in his bottle. The losec takes about 5 days to build up in the system when you start to I'm guessing that it will also take that long for it to build up to the new dose.

I'm wondering if anyone found that they actually had to swap medications to get good relief for their baby? I'm wondering if I should just put him onto Zoton.

Other question is did you increase your babies reflux dose and then get relief?

I've called the ped this morning just waiting for him to call back.

    Thanking you in advance...

I just replied to your other question and just copied and pasted it here, I do urge you to talk to your doctor before increasing the meds, but it should only take a couple of days to see an improvement once they are already on it and you increase it:

Hi there I was just browsing and just had to answer your question. The problem is the compounding. Although the pharmacies will say it lasts 4 weeks, it doesn't, it lasts more like 2 weeks.

I would find the exact same thing with my son, and searched around and found that most pharmacies actually compound it incorrectly by adding either too much buffer or use a sweetener, this decreases the stability of the medication.

I would get mine refilled every 2 weeks and split the script and had no problems.

I also wanted to let you know that 20mg a day is a hefty dose for a baby, I am on that much a day for my reflux. Although I am assuming if it has become instable he isn't getting that exact dose. But I would talk to the doctor about increasing it.

Losec worked miracles for my son, because he wouldn't take the beads with the zoton and had some side effects to it. I would think it hard to get them into a 9 week old, but different kids like different forms of the med, so if you think he will take the beads then you could try that also.

Also the gaviscon if given within 1 hour of the PPI will cause the medication to also become ineffective as the PPI actually needs an acidic environment to work. The longer you can space the gaviscon the better.

I am sorry that you sufferred so long with son number one, my son is 2 and a half and he has just gone off his meds, so I know how frustrating it can be when they 'don't grow out of it'. Hope that helps, good luck.

Hi, I had my nine week old daughter on Infacol with no success. Referred to a Paediatrician (sp!), he prescribed Zantac, and I am now able to put my daughter down during the day (previously could hardly have her on her back in comfort- but night sleeping was better than the day), she gets plenty of day sleep and will sleep thru the night more than ever. It took a couple of days to really help. Good luck.

My DD has had reflux for the past 8 months. We started off on Zoton with no improvement, then changed to Losec which seems to work. I have found amongst my friends that if the Losec did not work Zoton did and vice versa. Good Luck, I know it is a long sleepless road.
