I am just wondering for those whose bubs have reflux, is there anything out there that will help bubs to stop vomitting???? We are currently using mylanta but that doesnt seem to have ease the flow of vomit, it shoots out and there is ALOT of it........... im just wondering if to make another appointment with the doctor today to get something a little stronger than the mylanta, but want to know if any medication actually eases the vomitting or stops it all together????
My dd had severe reflux and would vomit about 30 times a day!
After much trial and error we found out she had a milk allergy as well! The pead put her on pepti-junior and witnin a month the vomitting stopped altogether!
So maybe see if there is something else going on with your little one.
ok......well after today both my DH and i are at our wits end!!!!! Poor bubba hasnt kept anything down again his vomit is flowing like a river!!!! DH has just gone down the chemist to buy some of the reflux formula........as much as i want to breastfeed, i feel bad but if it works then id rather have my bubba happy and not in pain like he is......has anyone tried thre formula????
Oh I know how you feel. We tried everything and nothing really worked. We did try the reflux formula but he hated it. We used to add thickener to his bottles - Karicare I think does it. You buy it from the chemist. I got very used to walking around with a teatowel over my shoulder and telling people "He chucks" when they asked to hold him.
DS was on Losec which helped ease the pain of the vomiting, but didn't stop it. He was a much happier baby though! We also tried a chiropractor which helped a little but not completely.
Stopping the vomitting is almost impossible which is a pain, but like you said you can try antireflux formulas (thickened formulas), or adding a food thickening agent to EBM or making that into a gel and giving it with the breasfeeds. Although there are mixed opinions on whether or not this does anything, for some people it does make a difference in the amount bub brings up.
Medication wise, most of these either help to neutralise the acid in the tummy, or some prescription ones work on to reduce the amount of acid the stomach makes..so these help significantly for the discomfort associated with having reflux, but won't have an effect on the vomitting.
Sorry to hear about your bub's reflux. It's not nice to see your bub going through it, is it?
Have you considered asking your Doc for Infant Gaviscon? This is a thickening agent that can really help, although for some people they find it has little impact. We've been using it and it's definitely made a difference to the amount DD possets/vomits, and I think this is what it's really good for, rather than solving the acid problem as much.
You can mix it up - it's a powder - in a few mls of water/EBM and give it to your baby after a BF - this is what we're doing. You can either use a spoon or we're using a syringe, and I syringe it into her mouth (inside of the cheek) a little at a time. It does tell you to mix the dose up to be about 15mls in total, but I've just been mixing it into 3-4mls water to make it easier to get it down.
It takes a bit of time, and you need to learn how to get it into bubs without them choking/spitting to much of it up, but it is worth it especially when/if you really keen to keep BF.
I hope you find an answer for the vomiting - hopefully something like the Gaviscon will help.

I told my DH to go to the supermarket last night instead of the chemist to get the formula cuz everyone seems to be anti formula and all breastfeed breastfeed breastfeed!!!!! So he comes home and yep you guessed it he went to the chemist...........why dont they listen to us lol They talked him into buying the infant gaviscon.......im willing to give it a go, i started him in it on his next feed. I guess it takes a while to get results???? How long should i expect to see some improvement??? The confusing thing is, the chemist told us to give it before a feed and only half the recommended dose???? Also do you give it at every feed???
