    Will my colic baby smile?

My DD is 5 weeks and I know that's too early to be worried about smiles yet, but I was wondering will she smile if she is so miserable? My son was smiling by 6 weeks, but he had no pain. It's breaking my heart that she is in pain and whenever she is awake she is crying.

Will I have to wait for her colic to be gone before I see her happy and see her beautiful smile.

My little boy is almost 4 weeks old and has been smiling however I was told this was not a real smile but more than likely just wind. Is this correct???? If so how I am supposed to tell if he is really smiling then???

Serena, my first bub didn't have colic, but it was AGES before I saw him smile. Maybe 3 months? He was a serious little chap. I was concerned too, with all my friends babies smiling early. Sometimes it's just their personality.

My second was pretty colicky to start off with, and he smiled pretty early - and is still a super cheery chap! Try not to worry - you might just have a solemn one? (To reassure you, I can hear #1 flicking a light switch on and off and giggling, so they still have their cheery moments!)

Shan, I'd heard that too. And I don't know. I think probably if they're making eye contact and smiling, then there's no doubt that it's a 'real' smile. But I don't know - I mean, kids aren't 'taught' to smile, so there's no reason why a baby can't have a genuine smile from birth, in my opinion.
(There are definitely poop smiles though, which are like a smiley grimace - hilarious. Look out for them one bub gets on solids down the track.)

DS has colic and he definately smiles.
The first one was around 6-7 weeks and now between all the screaming and crying at 4 months he will smile at me
Doesnt laugh as much as i remember DD did but he squeals if i stand him on on his legs and talk to him.

He doesnt like laying on his back much still but he is getting better

I think she is smiling I thought it was just wind yesterday, but then she did it when me, my husband or DS where talking or singing to her so I guess it is a smile YAAAAAY she isn't as miserable and sad as I thought she was. That makes me feel a lot happier knowing that not all of her day is painful for her.

    Thanks for your posts

my little man turned 6 weeks today and has suffered really bad reflux since he was 1 week old, anyway yesterday I thought he was smiling but I put it down to wind smiles.

but today he's been having a good day & yep he's been smiling at me all day

It's such a lovely sight to see & it made my heart melt, as I was starting to get used to seeing a screaming baby

Have you tried Infacol for her colic or wind? We have found it works amazing for my girls.. wish i knew about it when i had DS.. he had colic everyday until he was around 9 weeks old.. but we definately got alot of smiles from him.
