Hi,
Ava is now 15 weeks old and has been sleeping long stretches 8-10hrs since about 8weeks. The past week she has decided to wake every 3 hours. She will have a feed and go straight back to sleep. She seems to be wriggling all over her cot and is waking as she bumps her head or wriggles out from the covers. I have not been able to settle her back to sleep any other way than a feed and she seems genuinely hungry. I thought it may be a growth spurt but read that these should only last 1-2 days. I have fiddled with her covers as it has been warmer lately and nothing seems to work. I do have to confess that she sleeps on her tummy, were unable to get her to sleep any other way and it really helped with her reflux (matress slightly inclined too) So it is difficult to swaddle her as she needs her arms out to m ove her head from side to side. Have tried swaddling just legs but she wriggles out. Is it a normnalish thing to happen, to just change sleep pattern? It has only been a week should I wait a little longer before panicking? I was just getting used to the one feed a night and all of a sudden it is 3-4. would appreciate any suggestions!
yep totally normal...babies have a growth spurt anywhere from 14-16 weeks...and they feed more frequently at the breast to stimulate your milk supply. This frequent feeding can last anywhere from a couple of days to up to 10days, depending on your breast tissue.
For sleeping I highly recommend a sleeping bag...a good quality one such as a gro bag. They are a bit $ but well worth it, when compared to sleep deprivation
As Yogababy said, this is very normal. You'll also find this is often related to developmental milestones too. The wriggling sounds like a new skill that she is practicising and this interferes with their sleep. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll go through these stages for things like sitting, crawling and standing milestones. But the good news is that since she was such a good sleeper before, she will more than likely go back to being a good sleeper when the stage passes.
Charlie is 17wks & started doing this too just a couple weeks ago. Only has he gotten back on track the past 3nights waking for just the one feed. It's totally normal around that stage, they are getting so more altert too. He too wriggles from covers so we've started using a Grobag...fantastic. Though now instead of sleeping a long stretch til about 3am then feed & bed til morn, he wakes around 12am feed & then off til morning - just when you think your on track something else rears it's ugly head!!!
Thank-you all for your replies. I feel much better about it all now. Have a growbag tried it earlier on with no success but may give it another go as it would be great to get moneys worth. Is great to hear others stories at times like these!
I hope bubs settles for you soon! I don't have any advice as Dylan is waking every 45min- 1 1/2 all night!! The most he seems to be going is 2 hours at a time and usually only once overnight...his sleep has gradually been getting worse and worse!! AAAAHHHHH! I only feed him once though...I have no idea what to do with him!!
Sorry to crash - I would love if he only woke a few times a night though! hehehe.
