Do you agree with Dr??

I was at the Dr's for something with DS last week and she asked how he was sleeping. I said he sleeps through most nights. She told me that I need to wake at least once to feed him as he is too young to sleep through without a feed. I then asked her when is it ok for a baby to sleep through and she said not under one year.

What do you think?

I wouldnt be waking the baby unless they were sleeping all day and night and not feeding at all! I could on wish that my ds would sleep through at any age!

Do what you feel is right! follow your motherly instincts they are usually the best indicato!

I'd let him sleep.

I wonder what she would have said about my DS1 - he slept through from 5 days til about 4-5 months old, then would wake for a night feed. By about 8mths he was sleeping through again. I know the first time he did it I woke in a panic. It was also our first night home from hospital.

NO way hun.... If they are sleeping well, gaining weight well, feeding regularly and are generally healthy why on earth would you wake a sleeping baby? Izzy did the same and James sleeps 12-13 hours most nights and has done so since he was 3 weeks old. Unless there is some medical reason or if bub is not gaining weight I totally disagree. James feeds 2-4 hourly after his massive sleep, some days 2 some days even 5, I feed him on demand and he is thriving. Have you had an issues with weight gain etc?? As PP said - go with your instincts hun - if he needed a feed he would ask for it.

Ummm.. Miss M was sleeping through since about then.. and I NEVER wake a sleeping baby if I can help it (we currently do a dream feed at 10pm which sometimes she wakes up whilst doing!)

i wouldnt wake either unless there are other issues with weight gain. If you bub is healthy and just sleps at night then you're boht lucky, enjoy it while it lasts.
My DS was one too that slept thru form about 5 days old.

Zander slept through for 3 weeks, then woke for a week for a feed again around 4am - then slept through the next week or so, and has woken again the last few nights around 4am (think heat) - BUT - I know he needs it otherwise he wouldn't be asking for it cos he doesn't do it all the time KWIM?

At over 2 months I would be clapping he is sleeping - as long as he is getting 4 big feeds in minimum during the day - preferable 5 - 6 normal ones.

well firstly I am going to say. Your Dr sounds fabbo. Yeah Ok, she may be a little over the top but its refreshing to hear "I was told to wake my baby" rather then "I was told he should be sleeping through by now"

But... I do think its a bit of big call to say under 12 months shoul dbe waking for a feed. Its so different for every baby & for every stage in the first 12 months.
What you should be looking at is how many feeds in 24 hours. Not just when they took place.
If it was really hot & you were concerned DS should be having more (say the number of wet nappies wasn't as many as you would expect) then sure wake him & slip a extra feed in. But as PP's have said. If DS is happy, healthy & meeting milestones then youshould just enjoy this stage of sleeping through.

I second that. I got a lecture off my dr because ds wasn't sleeping through by six months.

Wow sleeping through at 2 months! I would give anything for my 2 munchkins to sleep through. Personally I wouldn't wake a sleeping baby either. Surely if your bub was hungry you'd know about it. Just be happy you have a good sleeper - enjoy it I say!!!

i wish my son woulda slept right thru @ 2mth lol. I wouldnt be waking him, obviously he is comfy and getting enough to eat

MJ was sleeping through from about 8 or 9 weeks, i was really suprise as she was BF...
It didnt last too long, at 6mths she started waking for feeds again overnight and is just starting to go some nights now without needing a feed (but still waking).
I spoke the CMHN and she told me that around 7mths they start needing an extra feed and its likely to last a month or too (well its been 4 for me :O)

I dont want to sound cynical, but enjoy it while it last, catch up on your sleep as it may all change in a month or two...

I've always been under the impression that if your baby needed a feed during the night he/she would wake up for one.....i've never been one to wake a sleeping baby, of course if either of my babies where losing lots of weight or i had very good reason to be waking him for a feed then i might think about it but otherwise i say let a sleeping baby sleep.

You do whatever you feel is best for you and your little one!

woken Ollie from the start for 11pm and 3/4am feeds. But he has had a distinct lackof interest in feeding from when he was born and is a slim child- takes after his dad I guess. Even now, at 10mths, he sleeps better if he has his 11pm feed- sometimes I have to wake him for that, fight to get bottle in his mouth then he feeds ravinously and straight back to sleep. Do what YOU think is right for your baby hun.

I have been told to wake my baby, granted she was very ill and not gaining weight or weeing, but the Drs and Nurses all said that unless your baby is ill do not wake a sleeping baby. They grow most when they are asleep so they need a fair bit of sleep. As long as he continues to gain weight and wee heaps then do not ever wake a sleeping baby!!

My baby started sleeping through from the night I brought him home from hospital. (I actually think he would have done it in hospital too if the nurses hadn't been hounding me to feed him!)

I did have a weight loss of 30gms at about 2 weeks so my MCHN told me that he is too young to be sleeping through and I should be waking him etc. I was really upset by this, thinking I was being a bad mother but when I tried to wake him at night he just wouldn't wake up. Remained asleep and floppy! DH and I thought that there must be something wrong with him but nope, he is just like his parents - enjoys his sleep. He also stacked on the weight that week so I knew it was not my lack of feeding for that loss.

It was from that point that I decided to follow my instincts regarding how to bring him up. I still get upset occasionally when people like to tell me I am doing the wrong thing, but I think I get upset because people feel they have the right to tell me how I should be bringing up MY baby.
