We had the falling out problem - our bed is quite high, so we tuck pillows on either side of the mattress to minimise pain! Luckily, my two seem to be quick learners and have only fallen out once each :)
I don't tell very many people at all that our 4 yr old is still in our bed...made the mistake of telling a couple of friends and very quickly learnt that I should just say that he sleeps well. My Mum and Dad are a great support, as my younger brother shared their bed for many years. He's now nearly 18 and I can assure you that he is well and truly in his own space and comfortable with it!! We had got our 4 yr old into his own bed, but then our baby girl arrived and was in his former spot, so he ended up back in!

Our little boy is 17 weeks old and sleeps in our room every night. He has however many 'boobies' he likes during the night and often ends up in our bed from 3 - 4 am. Otherwise he is right next to our bed in his bassinet. Ascher is a lovely boy, very settled and happy with his mum and dad.
I'm sad for those people who are so quick to isolate their little ones.

DS fed at night until he was almost 10m old, we only stopped then because he wasn't feeding back to sleep. That was making a rod for my own back because he then refused to cosleep with me so I had to get out of bed every time he woke up for the next four-five months, when the I gave him a homeopathic remedy and he slept through.
Why should people be doing XYZ at a certain age? Why sleep at this age - did your GP get his first chest hair exactly to date? Does he have the "correct" number of chest hairs? Or is that all individual... like sleeping through? (Seriously, I'm thinking of saying things like this next time.)
You know what's worse? If your child does sleep though, you're so lucky because someone else didn't sleep through for seven years. Why didn't you tell me this when I was struggling a couple of weeks ago? Grrr.
