Ah Sue, you've been having a hard time with sleep recently haven't you?
I quite like the book.
We tried the ncss when dd was about 4 months old and it was terrible at the time. I followed it to the letter, but she was way too young in hindsight and all it did was stress me out and upset her. As you know, however, recently we've been moving dd into her cot/own room and despite a good start towards her sleeping through the night too we've taken a few steps back over the Christmas break (4 beds in 2 weeks, bless her) and I'm now using some ncss and sleeping like a baby elements along with a few suggestions from bb and my own ideas to night wean and encourage her to sleep through.
I don't think I could do it to the letter again - staying in all the time to make that my only focus was soul destroying! We do however have a very set bedtime routine, and a rough (as in give or take 1/2 hour) bedtime, which works well for us and dd is always happy to go to bed. I leave it totally up to her whether she feeds to sleep or not - I know she can settle without being on the boob, so I don't stress it. Until recently I had to get her completely to sleep before I got her to sleep, so I'm gradually putting her down more and more awake. I'm still staying by her side, sometimes with my hand on her, sometimes not, until she's completely asleep at this stage.
I haven't re-read the book recently, so I'm only going with what I can remember, and I'm definitely not getting hung up on any timelines - we're doing this strictly at DD's pace. It does seem to be working - it's not the quick fix that DH would prefer, but I can see gradual improvements. I think above all, the thing that's helped me the most is waiting until she's ready. It might not be the right time with teething problems, but it might be ok too, so I'd say test the water, and if it doesn't work, don't get disheartened, just have a break and try again in a couple of weeks.
