My understanding is that ovulation is followed by a period (unless pregnancy occurs), but periods do not always follow ovulation as we can fail to ovulate any month for a number of reasons.

You can absolutely, definitely, 100% have a period without ovulating.
Yep, what n2l and rhichichi have said. Saw an ob/gyn last month and she said you can definitely get a period without ovulating. As far as I know, the lining of your uterus breaks down after a certain time (if you don't ovulate) so you get AF.
