Can you get false positive tests?

Hi... I'm in a bit of a state of shock right now!! To say the least. I have been feeling a little "wierd" is how I'd describe it. Needing to pee all the time and when I pee it feels different - I actually said to DH I hope I'm not getting a bladder infection. To be honest, I normally worry a lot about falling pregnant unplanned and say maybe I'm pregnant then of course AF arrives and I'm good. Sometimes I do a test just to put my mind at ease (as I've have irregular periods).

I'm not due (as a rough guide) for AF until next week sometime. For some unknown reason I just walked into the bathroom and pulled out a test (I keep one on hand as I live in small town and never want to buy one here) went to the toilet and it says PREGNANT... It was a clear blue digital one. Can you get false positives???

My DH is at work on Night Shift and while I could text him - I don't want to do that. I'm freakin out here not knowing what to think. It's not a bad thing as we've been talking about trying around July 09. But I'm worried as I had quite a few drinks last Friday and been having 1 sometimes 2 coffee's. Haven't had any pre-conception tests etc

So sorry that this is so long for a simple question - must be the adrenalin and not being able to talk to anyone yet....

It is possible but the Clear Blue are quite reliable. Dont worry about what you did before the test. I still drink some caffinated drinks, just less than I used to. Congrats on your pregnancy.

Considering you do not have regular periods you need to go to the doctor and have dating scan. They try to make this around 7 weeks after your last period so there is a chance you can see the heartbeat.

Well it sounds like there is a good chance you are UTD! I think it is possible to get false positives from what I've heard, but they seem pretty rare. Do you have any more tests on hand? Maybe try another one and see if you get the same result. Otherwise book a trip to your GP and get a blood test done to find out for sure.

Don't stress out about the alcohol, a bub at this stage doesn't share your bloodstream. And you can have a couple of cups of coffee a day while pregnant so don't stress!

    Best of luck

WOW... Thanks ladies. I do have one test left cos it was a pack of 2 but am thinking I should wait till the morning and do it with DH. But on the other hand what if I stress all night for no reason.... What would you do? Test again or wait till the morning?

My head is spinning, I feel so nervous I feel sick. Have butterflies in my tummy!!! I really feel like I'm gonna get my period and have got some tummy cramps but have just read that it can be a sign. - I've a lot to learn!

It's up to you when you want to test again! If it will help you sleep tonight by doing one, then do it! You could always buy some more tests tomorrow . If you'd prefer to do the test in the morning with your DH, then go to bed NOW so it's morning quickly LOL!

If you want to do another wait to do it with DH. I've never heard of a false positive with one of those tests so I'd say congrats are in order.

By the way when I fell pregnant with my son I was super stressed and was practically living on coffee until I suspected I was pregnant and all turned out well.

my doctor told me you can't get false positives...

Mine did too but there have been a few girls here on BB who have had false positives using the PREGNOW brand HPT. It showed positive & they had a BT which showed no HCG levels.
That is the only brand I have ever heard of people getting false positives with though.

I believe those digital ones are especially reliable...

    Congrats

    Hey congratulations!

False positives are very rare, you sometimes get evaporation lines, but that's not possible with a digital - if it's the kind where you can eject the stick, and you DO eject the stick, you will see two lines on it. I actually know someone who's digital said NOTPREGNANT but when she ejected there were 2 lines, but the second was faint - 2 days later she got a PREGNANT.

Was your last period normal for you? It wasn't lighter or shorter than normal?

I rang the company of the test I used as my line was quite faint and they are completely accurate! they said there any line is a positive result no matter how faint!! (I'm not sure what brand I used now) I was too excited!!!

If you do one in the morning the line should be a bit darker looking....as the weeks go on the line will get darker also as your levels get stronger!!

Congrats to you I say!!! Do a few more tests over the coming days and make an appointment to see a doctor and go from there.....how exciting for you!!!!

Thanks for your messages ladies. I can see Belly Belly being my new home. I've not slept much at all, so have just done the second test - couldn't hold on any more and wanted to use the first morning pee. I'm pregnant! DH will be home in about an hour / hour and half... Just gotta work out how to tell him - I'm sure he'll be excited and embrase this big surprise.
