Home insemination-can it work-question for my friend
I have a friend who is trying for a baby with her partner, only problem is he works away 6 weeks and is only home for 1 week then gone again, she ovulates when he isnt there so what she was wondering is can she freeze his sperm at home and defrost it when she ovulates and do self insemination, how long can she freeze it and how long does it take to defrost, she is on the phone at the moment with me so any help will be greatly appreciated.
freezing at home isn't going to work very well if at all - it doesn't freeze the swimmers quickly enough, so the tails that are needed for them to swim are going to be useless, making the whole sample useless. effectively the freezing process in a home freezer with denature the proteins and screw up the sample. when it's done by a clinic, the freezing is almost like "snap" freezing, and i believe they use liquid nitrogen so it happens immediately.
if your friend is wanting to get pg but having issues with timing, it may be better for her to investigate intrauterine insemination and get the clinic to collect, clean and store the swimmers and transfer them when she O's - home insemination, from what i understand, tends to only work with fresh samples - highly unlikely to get any decent sperm (if any at all) if frozen at home
My DH works away, we had his sperm frozen and I can use it when he is away via the FS .. Your friend could use IUI with a FS with the frozen sample. It defrosts well, and it would be a great chance to make sure his swimmers are in good shape .
