    Mirena - any info please

Having just given birth to our second child, I am wanting some reliable contraception without the drastic measure of tubes tied. Our intention is for no more children, however won't to have options further down the track if needed. My OB has suggested a Mirena, and whilst their brochure is predictably positive, I'd like some 'real' feedback before I try. I am nearly convinced that it is a great idea, but your honest feedback and experiences will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I recently had Mirena in for 6 months. I found the peace of mind, and ease of use was brilliant as it's literally set and forget. Unfortunately I got periods that lasted for two weeks, for the whole time I had it, and that's why I got it removed. DH did also feel the string which he found a bit off putting. Having said that, my friend got Mirena at the same time, and she has had no probs at all. It's been brilliant for her. I say it's definitely worth trying, because if it works out well, it's the best contraception ever.

Akmi, I was in your exact situation and have had the Mirena for a bit over a year. I have found it to be pretty good. I spotted for about 6 weeks when it was inserted, but since then I haven't had any problems. AF is a lot lighter, and a little irregular.

I recommend you at least try it. It's a pretty good option for bfing mums who have limited choices and while it's not for everyone, it is easily removed and not very expensive so you don't really have much to lose. GL.

I had a mirena inserted late Thu 7Aug (AF early Tue 5Aug - they recommend during AF), no problems so far apart from very slight occasional spotting. So far so good. Started leaking some breast milk after my shower this morning, only a little, not sure if this is normal or not as can't find anything in the booklet they gave me. I can't really feel the string, & my husband can't feel it during DTD. They did say however if he does notice it & it's off putting to come back in & they'd just trim it shorter.

Was just like having a pap smear done, they gave a local anaesthetic in my cervix which i didnt even feel, they just said give me a deep cough & did it whilst i coughed.

Have to get it checked 6 wks after insertion by GP.

I've only heard good stories so far & spotting on/off for up to 4mths then little or no AF at all. Apparently after 12mths of insertion the chance of no AF is greatly increased.

They said it's on par with having your tubes tied, 99.9% effective.
