Olive - how did it go? I was thinking of going to one soon.:
I redid the hollandaise sauce/poached eggs the other day with more success. Cooked the eggs for less time and inserted the butterfly for the sauce! Doh! Forgot to do that last time. In another brain fail, I think I may have forgot to use vanilla to the vanilla ice cream I made last week. Tastes like nothing :(
What have everyone else been making?

I finally made my snickerdoodles. The recipe said it made 48. I made 22. I think they probably should have been smaller :) Very yummy, especially warm and soft straight from the oven. I'm telling myself that because I used rapadura sugar, they're not too bad for me :)
I've learnt with baking, that even thought the TMX recipe may say just throw everything in at once, that's it's still better to cream the butter and sugar first. Otherwise it doesn't seem to mix as well, or you have to mix longer.

Has anyone got a recipe for Buckwheat Pikelets? Can you substitute Buckwheat flour for regular flour

V-Love - lol at the quote! All the words were there, it's all good :) I don't have a buckwheat pikelet recipe, but I'm a keen substituter, I'd just try it and see how you go. Then you can tell us if it worked & we can do it too (ok, so maybe I'm just keen for you to be the guinea pig!). What went wrong with the cake? Can't be worse than my rice fail, I mean really - how basic!!
Speaking of rice, if anyone else does half recipe, do you reduce the time? I think that's where I'm going wrong.

AFM, well did another curry (thai curry again) with evaporated milk (coconut flavour) for me. was yummo. My first thai red curry in 9 years, seriously heavenly awesome! I'm so thrilled that a) I can make red curry paste I can eat and b) found a cocout substitute. I'm also right into the orange & carrot juice, it's awesome. I halve the recipe & make it just for me.
Does anyone else like the hommus? I just can't seem to get it right. Am gonna try it using some roasted garlic, reckon that'd taste great.
Olive - how was the butter? And did it go really hard in subsequent days? or was it ok?
belfie i mixed half with olive oil to keep it spreadable but i used too much (or need to use a neutral oil) as it tastes like olive oil now! i halved the recipe. i used the other half this morning to make hollendaise sauce.
when you half a recipe you reduce cooking time byt 20% ir if doubling increase by 20%
Belfie - wrt the butter - quirky cooking blog has recipe on there for spreadable butter - basically mix with oil and water in equal amounts as to the weight of butter.
My butter was great- was just like one you buy in the shops!

Hi all, just got my thermie a couple of weeks ago and have been using it more and more often. Today was "preserves" day and I sterilized heaps of jars. I made nutella, peanut butter, marmalade, lemon butter and strawberry jam. Poor thermie had a good workout.
My last strawberry jam is now a "dessert sauce" as it was so runny so I cooked this lot for longer and it's perfect! I don't actually like strawberry jam as a rule but I could eat this stuff by the spoonful. Strawberries are so cheap and yummy at the moment, I'm going to get more and do up a whole lot of jars to keep.
The marmalade went everywhere, all over the thermie, the splashback, the bench, the recipe book EVERYWHERE. I've cleaned everything a few times but we keep finding sticky spots lol. And I had to cook it for a lot longer than the book said to but we got there in the end. Not as tart as I would've liked but still good.
DH was very impressed with the peanut butter and nutella too. The texture is just like the real thing!
Question to you all, what do you do with the egg whites left over from yolk only recipes. I was making meringues but don't think it's good for the hips to have meringues every week. :)
I'm really enjoying hearing about all your adventures with thermie!

How long are people keeping their homemade spreads etc for? I stupidly gave myself food poisoning over the weekend with hummus. I should have looked up how long to keep it before eating it! Anyway, I then proceeded to throw out a heap of things including the lemon butter. Even though they've been in the fridge, I figure they should have a max of a week? WDYT? There's only the 2 of us, so we're not going through much. And DH wont eat hummos or lemon butter... Mr I Will Eat Anything indeed :) Happily, I discovered Apple Cider Vinegar is a good cure for food poisoning. I've been sipping it in water with raw honey the last couple of days. I also lost 1kg, so wasn't all bad.
v-love: the GF pancake recipe includes 100gm buckwheat and 100gm brown rice instead of flour. I am about to cook myself up a batch of the pancakes now. They're lovely. They include bananas so no added sugar. I threw some Chia seeds into the mix as well for added goodness. I also saw a recipe for buckwheat pasta on Quirky Cooking.
belfire - the snickerdoodles are plain cookies rolled in a sugar/cinnamon mix before baking. I haven't been well enough to eat them so I hope they keep (I used GF flour so that reduces how long they last). DH has nobly taken on eating my share for me :)
I am making more chicken soup today. I finished of the frozen batches over the weekend whilst feeling poorly.
I made "Not fried rice" from the Robogourmet app last night. It was OK. A bit weird steaming an omelette in the Varoma, but it worked OK. Good for a bland meal when you have a sore tummy.
Just so y'all know, you're making me flamin' jealous.

Oh dear! Hope you feel better soon. How old was it? I googled that very thing just the other day, and it seemed to suggest that up to a week was ok. (My DH wanted to throw it after 3 days!!):

I tried half buckwheat half plain forur in the Anzac Cookies from the EDC...gave them a lovely texture, nery nice.
Dantri- the Banana, Date and Walnut bread in the EDC uses 2 egg-whites. I've been freezing mine from the Ice Cream...I'm pretty sure they freeze ok.
One more thing- Flourless Chocolate Brownie Cookies from Quirky Cooking...MAKE THEM- AS SOON AS YOU CAN !!!!!!!:dance:
does anyone have a silicon baking mat? And if so, what do you think of it?
We hosted a varoma demo on Sat night, and I've found out that I can buy the silicon baking mat at a reduced price ($40 instead of $60). I'm thinking of getting it... but I haven't got my GF cooking book yet, so I'm not sure how much I'd need it?

Belfie - I bought a huge baking mat from a homewares store and I havent used it so far. I wanted to use it to help prove bread but GF bread is so cakelike, it normally needs to prove in a tin. I'm planning on getting another thermoserver at our varoma demo. You cant buy them in stores and we find them really useful. How did your demo go? Apparently there are steamed lemon coconut puddings involved. I'm looking forward to those :) btw - I've found the GF recipe book useful even with just finding out about different composition of flours
I had a fail last night with creme brulees from the EDC. It may be our oven or I didnt put enough corflour in. They didnt set :( They were also difficult to get out of the water baths without having boiling water go everywhere and DH dropped one whilst trying to help me. The remaining half cooked ones still tasted nice and he had the last of the coconut ice cream instead. I must remember to make more. Also, the creme brulee recipe said it made 8-12. I found it was more like 5. We had some left over and just added it to the normal custard mix we made tonight before cooking. Very nice.
Today I made a cardamon cake from the Indian cookbook. It says to let mature for a day so I havent tasted it yet. I didnt have enough cardamon seeds, so I added cloves to the mix. It smelt good. I shall taste some tomorrow.
I also made a caesar dressing without anchovies. Recipe on the TMX forum. I liked it, though it's not GF. DH went without. We made up a caesar type salad with leftover bbq chicken from last night. It included cos lettuce, cold chicken, crispy bacon bits, and a mix of brown rice & 3 colours of quinoa for added protein. I added the dressing and ground pecorino and it was yum :). I told you I made things up as I go. Sometimes they work. I plan on making a pudding with the rest of the brown rice & quinoa. Just like baked rice pudding but good for you :)
That sounds good Tash - all of it!!! I need to start having more salads, hard in this weather its so cold still and salads are such a summery type of thing!!!
I went searching yesterday for a recipe that needed condensed milk, and found one on the forum for a lemon slice, so I made that and OMG. Soooo freakin' nice. DH and I ate half of it last night... soooo soooo bad. Must get back to healthy eating!
My cook top is now broken thanks to DH, so I'm relying on the thermo more than ever to cook for us!!! Had a busy day yesterday made bread, butter (with a borrowed butterfly from my friend cos I can't find mine - I think a child may have gotten into my cupboard and taken it away some where cos the friggin thing can't fly away itself!!) and spreadable butter.
Oooh there are thermoservers on ebay for sale, but someone is asking for $260 for one!! Bloody ridiculous. Just go through your consultant and they are like $30 with a demo or something.. LOL I'm getting a new butterfly now ($25 for those interested) but I'm swapping one of them with some night nappies (made up with cash too haha)

arrrgh - in the middle of making chorizo & capsicum risotto - and I haven't got enough arborio rice. Can't go out, kids are both asleep. Darn it! I hope it will work if I "pause" for about 2 hours!

Hey, been using my thermie baby since July!! I love it!! Were also having risotto tonight. Mine is usually just any veggie that I can find. I got mushies yesterday and have craved zucchini for the last trimester, the pumpkin looks like it won't last so I'll add tht!! We dnt eat meat cause if health reasons for hubby, but I think I'll add a bit of chicken for the kids. Dd2 is sick and I LOVE a quick risotto!!

I made hummus with falafels for dinner last night, my hubby goes thru at least 1 recipe of hummus a week!!! The falafel recipe I used rocked!!! And made vegan mayo today... Nom nom lurrrvve garlic!!!
How many times a day do you girls use ur TMX? I'm quite obsessed! Made dairy free chocy ice cream last night, it's nearly gone! Lol

I'm just about to make a late dinner. DH is away so I can have risotto.
What recipe books do people have? I have the EDC, GF, Indian and the Traveling with TMX one. The last one isnt much good but the other 3 are good. I am thinking about getting My Way of Cooking, but it's $60 i think. Has anyone got it/used it? What do you think?
I've just got the EDC I get all recipes frm the net, the price of the books ate a bit of a crock IMO. I think they aren't the best recipes in the EDC, I find myself adapting them etc... I need to start a blog I recon...
So I'm not only one obsessed.. I hope my electricity bill doesn't go up toooo much...

I have my varoma demo this morning. Am looking forward to it - the food sounds so yummy! We'll be getting the varoma cookbook too, which will be good as I've barely used the varoma so far
Mine's not for a few weeks. The menu for it looks good.
I actually took a bunch of cookbooks to bed to read last night :) i've borrowed a le cruset dutch oven from Mum and want to use it tonight. I figure it's just like a slow cooker, yes? I want to make a chicken casserole. TMX will be used for herbs & spices and for making mash.
Big cookup weekend this weekend :)
I read on the forum about doing a roast in the Varoma. We shall give that a go at some stage. You brown it first. Apparently it comes out really tender.
btw - the chicken casserole was so yummy. I roasted and ground the spices with fresh herbs and made a sauce in the TMX then cooked in the oven. So yum. We couldnt get the timing right on steaming vegies in the Varoma, so DH thinks we should just do on the stove.
I am feeling blah so it's fish & chips for dinner tonight. I do want to try some baking over the weekend. I now want to try GF sweet rolls or cinnamon scrolls. I've been researching all day but not made anything yet, so that can be tomorrow's job.
Have people seen the Thermomix app that is out on Monday? Apparently it is the recipes from My Way of Cooking, which I've just ordered :) I'm interested in the shopping list/meal planner part of it.
What are people cooking up this weekend?
Sterla - how did the demo go?
The demo went really well - the food was so yummy and it made so much we had the leftovers for tea and lunch the next day. We got the Full Steam Ahead cookbook which looks okay.
We are having beef rendang for tea tonight for my dad's birthday. DH has also made naan bread to go with it. Can't wait to have it - smells really good!
How can you make a risotto taste like cr@p?!?? MAN!!!!! my risotto SUC&ed!!!! Going to make some condensed milk tonight with a secret recipe I've developed then turn it into caramel slice, also my own recipe... I can't wait to get another computer, ours is stuffed so have to use my iPhone for everything.

Just saw the email about the app... very excited! Tashybabe can you cancel your order of the physical cookbook?
I'd really like to be able to add our own recipes to the app, but I can't see whether or not this is possible. Any ideas?
We make our own chai lattes in TMX with milk and chai powder (cheating, I know, but atm don't have time to make completely from scratch although we have done it before and it's delicious!). So much cheaper than the cafes!
I'm happy to still get the cookbook. I like having pages to turn and be able to read without squinting at the phone. Very old school of me, I know :) i dont know if you can add recipes. I'd like to be able to add comments or adjustments.
Just watched Mum make bolognase. She puts 1kg in instead of the 400gm suggested in the EDC. Turned out much better. The EDC really does put too much liquid into things. We did a big cook up last weekend so I dont need to make anything. I feel like doing some thera-baking though. I will see tomorrow.
tash i use 500g of mince for spag bol, but i find it needs more liquid :lol:
