You CAN do it, Ticktoc. Haved your shoes and clothes ready to go, and maybe even just go back to the last week you ran, rather than going on to the next week - you've done it before, so that should give you the confidence that you can do it again.
Hi all!
I think I was the one who started this thread in 2011 . I've recently had #2 and really wanna start exercising again. I was really bad at this last time. I'm contemplating starting again but not sure if I'll stick to it....
Thank you for your support ladies I got up this morning & it was pitch black I walked past the oval where I normally do the program & there was barely any lighting which I feel is a bit of a safety issue -esp once I have my ear phones in. Think I'm just going to walk 30mins around the block until daylight savings ends & it becomes light again. At least if I stick to the footpath there's street lighting.
chody, that sounds like a very realistic goal. You can so it - Just get started again from week one, and you'll be back into it in no time! And all the support you want is right here! I'm looking for a 5km run sometime soon... There's a 4km run at the end of April, but I'm not sure about it, not that it's too soon, just that if I stick to the program, then 4km should be a bit too easy by then!
Ticktoc, that's a shame about the darkness. Could you run evenings instead? Could you run along the street, rather than do the walk? Many of my runs are footpath or road edge because I have the pram, and pushing the pram on grass would make it impossible for me to sustain a run.
I could run on the foot path but (here come the excuses) I have bad knees & trouble with my right hip so I find the concrete too jarring, plus I don't like exercising in public (sounds stupid but have a fear of people laughing at me) Exercising in the evening is a possibility but I always have less energy & don't get the same results. Being on this thread is making me wish I had someone to train with. Maybe I can convince DP to get a dog??
Yeah... I wish I had someone to train with too. You wanna come to Perth 3 times a week?
I'm a physio, so I get the no-concrete rule, for sure. Did you know that bitumen (ie, road surfaces) are a lot softer that concrete footpaths for running? You need to watch out for the camber it the edge where the water drains to the side of the road, but maybe bitunmen would be ok on your joints where concrete isn't?
And I'm the same in the evenings. Just not able to get out of the house except maybe for something social (I used to go to dance classes and things in the evenings, that was fine!)
As for the laughing bit... I'll bet they're admiring someone with the drive to run and the commitment to keep going when they're obviously struggling with it. If you ever see a smirk, it's a self-pitying smirk of jealousy, and the thoughts behind it are, 'Wow, check her out. She's knackered, but she's not giving in... I wish I could be that tough.'
Thank you Pholi, you've given me the warm fuzzies
The running on bitumen makes sense - it explains why I often see people running on the side of the road!
I finished the C25k about 3 weeks ago, and was covering 4.8km in 30 minutes of running, and the 5 minute warm-up and cool-down. I feel great that I finished it, but I'm not actually riunning 5km, so I clearly need to pick up my pace a bit.
So I started again, but this time doing slow jogging instead of walking, and striding out faster in the running sections. I'm now doing week 3 of that, but I've found that my pram wheels get the wobbles when I go faster - not everytime, but often enough to make it really frustrating. I really can't justify buying a brand new jogger pram, but I did pick one up from the recycling centre (cost of pram plus a dozen other smaller items, $25) that at least has 3 large wheels, and is in ok shape otherwise. It's a Steelcraft 'Terrain'. The padded bits have only just dried on the line after a wash, so I haven't tried it yet, but fingers crossed it's going to make it easier to run a little faster.
I also decided to enter the HBF 'Run For A Reason' - the 4km one, not the 14km, but who knows - if I keep this up, maybe I'll do the 14km next year. I'm really proud of myself for being able to run 30 minutes straight, even if it is really slow! I needed something to give me a bit of a kicj up the arse and make me keep it up despite the wheel-wobble frustration.
Well done pholi! Awesome job I have not been running for weeks! I'm working in some others parts of my life at the moment and am finding it hard to fit everything in, but am definitely aiming to get back into it soon. Really have to get my stuff together and find the right balance and work exercise back into my routine.
Way to go everyone who is still going or has finished
