How do you clean hot plates?

On the electric stove? I am super good at putting massive stains on them, even rust on the ones at our old place.
What cleans them without making them rusty?

I use a scourer and water and some good ol' elbow grease then dry. But we have one of those flat electric ones.

I know it gets mentioned a gazillion times, but bicarb and vinegar. I sprinkle bicarb over the top of the stove and then spray vinegar over the top and scrub scrub scrub, stopping to rinse off the cloth. Has worked a treat here- way better than the storebought stuff I'd been using!
