    Question Sweetened Condensed Milk?

I've been looking around and can't see an alternative to buying Nestle Sweetened Condensed Milk!

Does anyone know of another brand?

Unfortunately I think they are the only ones that make it (surprisingly!)

I think they also make the home brands so even though it isn't ideal in that I feel I can't avoid them I buy the cheaper ones so that they profit the least from me

I make my own.... my kids are dairy free so I make my own using rice milk. You can google different recipes, basically you do a low simmer of milk with sugar until it condenses

I thought there was a Carnation brand. Not sure if they are an ok brand or not thought.

ETA: ignore that - looks like Carnation is also Nestle

i was reading a recipe for a cheese cake and one of the ingredients was something i hadnt heard of before

its a kind of sweetened condensed milk that you buy in gourmet deli's... sorry i cant remember the name.

Alternatively as mentioned you can easily make your own by slowly boiling milk and sugar.

    Thanks for all your replies!

I think I'll be looking up a recipe to use... I know it's just milk and sugar, but I'd like to get the balance right!

Carnation used to make it when I was a shop girl - and you could also get black and gold brand then too. Haven't taken alot of notice recently what's available. Oh just read someone else's reply oops.

It might be just Australia. In the US and France they have other brands. I think I might throw a few tins in my luggage on the way home. There is a shop in Melbourne that sells U.S. foods/brands that are hard to find in Australia so Melbournites might be able to stock up there.

I found another super easy recipe:

Put 1/2 cup boiling water into a blender
Add 1 cup of nonfat dry milk.
    Add 2/3 cup sugar.
Add 3 tablespoons of melted butter.
Add a few drops of vanilla.
Cover and blend on high speed for 30 seconds or until smooth.
    Remove from the blender.
Use in a recipe immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator.

It's possible (probable?) that Nestle/Carnation produce the home brand one too, but I'm similar to tk1999, in that I buy it and hope if it's Nestle at least they make less money from me...

I was thinking that was what I was going to have to do too! I *could* make my own, but to be honest with myself - I probably won't!
