Has anyone taken their families to Melbourne Cup (in Melbourne)? I am thinking of taking my family tomorrow but not sure f it is a family environment ?? Can you take a picnic and sit on the floor do you take fold out chairs or stand all day???
I have no idea what the experience would be like.. has anyone been ?
My brother and his friends had to pay quite a bit for their own picnic spot (about $130 per head). I'm pretty sure if you don't have a picnic spot you have to stand.
from what DH has said, it's really NOT a family environment - if you want family environment for races, you're better off going to a smaller meet that is family oriented (one of the local tracks has family carnival environment dec 27)
cup day is exxy, lots of people drinking heaps... prolly not great for a family day out...
Have a look at the Flemington Race Course webpage.
For general admission its $60 per adult and $10 per child.
For a picnic spot on the lawn its anywhere from $130-$240 per person. These tickets can only be purchased through ticketek.
ETA: My brother actually bought a "carpark" with his friend which is a 6x3 reserved picnic spot. They paid $200 each (there are 10 of them). It's so expensive!!!!!

Just to answer a few of your questions...even though you have decided not to go....
We are members of the VRC and I have still decided to bypass spring racing carnival.
You can sit and bring a picnic etc...that is if you get there at 5am! It is sooooo crowded, many drunken fools and for some reason it always rains on Cup Day!
Picnic races in country towns is a much better idea for bring Kiddies along to, heaps of space to run around and they often have children's activities.Just google 'country races Victoria" for locations.
