(i put this here cause its family related...i think its the best place)
My grandma is 92 and still lives at home on her own. does everything for herself. The only thing she doesnt do is mow the lawn. And she is still as quick wited as she ever! She recently hurt her ankle tho and despite now needing a special boot and a walker she was assessed as being able to stay home =)
my mum and one of my aunts are currently visiting and helping her with follow up appointments etc.. and now im not working i thought i would come and visit too (and take the oppitunity to visit my late nan who i miss insanely) so im here too.
Basically the point of this is to tell you how awesome and witty my grandma is, even as 92.. we all went out for lunch and as we were driving these 2 young teenage girls were crossing the road. Grandma started going on about them wearing short shorts on a day like this! it was grey and overcast and cold and not to mention the revealing nature if the shorts... You know all the normal stuff old people say about the youth. and then completely unexpected she jusr pipes up and says "well at least they are fat...the plumpness must keep them warm! I almost wet myself i was laughing so hard. just did not expect her to say that.
(i hope this isnt one of those you had to be there things...)
but just wanted to share and hear other peoples funny family stories =)
I miss my Nan's too! one passed when i was 14, the other only a few years ago.
My second nan, and my pop, lived in a big house on a huge block til they were 87 and 97 respectively - they used to travel all over the place with a caravan til pop was in his early 90's. Nan was blind for years before she passed away - and she made some of the funniest things cos she couldn't see - usually in the kitchen lol
couple of things that really stand out - cooking rissoles, going to pour a little oil in the pan,but grabbing vinegar instead - smelt like sweet and sour, and didn't taste tooooooooooo bad lol
another day, she was making vegie soup, and sent pop to get chicken noodle soup to go in it - given both of them had failing eyesight, she just added the packet and wondered why the soup was a bit sweet - turns out they'd put a packet of raspberry jelly in the soup! which is bad enough obviously - until they were recounting the story, and said that it was a bit hard to reheat it the next night, cos it had set, but they managed to break it up enough to eat it the next night too! NOTHING went to waste lol
That sounds like a cross between what both my Nans were like - one wasn't too afraid of giggling and gossiping with me (I'm tearing up typing this, I miss her so much ), and the other was obsessed with people's weight. Especially hers, and annoyingly mine
That just put a smile on my face. My grandmum was 92 when she passed away and it's been almost 5 years and the main thing I remember was her witty humour.
Love it. She sounds like a doll. I was very, very close to my Nan and miss her terribly nearly 8 years after she passed at age 91.
You put me in mind of an "oh nan moment" I had years ago. My nan had a terrible habit of whispering loud enough so people could hear, I'll never forget my mum and I took her to Melbourne when she was about 78 (she hadn't been there for decades). We took her to Chinatown and she kept "whispering" to mum and I "look at all the Asians, there are so many Asians here - look!". My mum and I were like "Nan, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!". The poor love meant it innocently enough, but it was a real "oh nanna" moment for us. (ps: she lived in a small Tassie town virtually all her life, so it probably was an eye-opener for her to see multicultural Australia at it's best). Not suggesting this was a witty nan moment - far from it - but it's still (for me) an enduring memory of my sweet nan.
yea my grandma is as sharp as a tac. Still does her cryptic crosswords. she is also an artist (better than me) and helped me develop my gift. She is such an inspiration to me.
My nan passed away a few years back and its so painful not being able to share Spock with her.
I wasn't that close to Mum's Mum, she was a very uptight woman. My strongest memory of her was seeing her after we'd come back from 2 weeks holiday, and she told me I was the only one who didn't look fatter!
Dad's Mum on the other hand, was my favourite person ever. When I was a kid, she and I and Mum went to see Mr Holland's Opus at the cinema, only they'd got the time wrong, and it wasn't on. So we saw Jumanji instead. It was only us in there, so Nana kept up a running commentary - every time the animal stamped went through, she'd say she was the one rhino lagging behind the rest. Then at the end, when everything was sucked back into the game, she was looking for her rhino friend, and said she didn't see him. I told her that they were going backwards, so she woulda been first - she laughed out loud and said that was AWESOME!
Another time, we were out witnessing, and there was a new couple who had moved into the congregation, and people were having trouble remembering the wife's name - Louise. Nana pipes up, right in front of her, and says, 'Just think of Louie the Fly!'
My great nan was 90 when she passed when i was PG with DD1 she was in a nursing home and was physically unable but mentally boy oh boy... she could make DP blush with her jokes and didn't mind throwing ina few expletives when needed.
I walked in once and she looked at me and said "you look a bit round, is that natural" because she wanted me to be PG
Silly things like "that man better hurry up & make an honest woman of you before you run away with the milkman" then she would quickly change her mind and say something like "not the milkman, the IT tech... get with the times"
That is so lovely Teirae! I have an awesome nanna too. I love her to bits and can't wait to visit her in the next week or so (we live 9 hours away from her now). She is 87 and is fit as a fiddle, she has the best stories to tell and has the best perspective on life. I can only hope to be half as awesome as she is at her age.
I have so many fantastic stories about her like how at her 90th she was up parting and dancing with the 20 - 30 year old grandchildren.
Im worried about her now tho with her foot.. Its so deformed...
