Opinions on Baby BeeHinds?

Hello,

I am considering using fitted cloth nappies for baby number 2. So far I have looked at Baby BeeHinds nappies (the 2 part system in hemp).

Has anybody used these? Do you like them? Are there any other brands out there that are better or comparable?

Hey Bek Yeah Baby BeeHinds (or BBH as you might see them abbreviated as) are great. They might not fit your newborn straight away, but it won't take long, they tend to fit from around 4kg. River pretty much fit into them straight away cos he was 4.2kg. We have maybe 8? 10? BBH, and they are a great 'workhorse' nappy, as in, they are reliable and do a good job.

You can get BBH in hemp or bamboo (the coloured ones are the bamboo), the absorbency is pretty similar, with bamboo being a bit more absorbent, but consequently taking longer to dry.

Feel free to pop into the cloth nappies chatter thread to ask questions too, or there's a few sites like ozclothnappies and nappycino that have info for people getting into modern cloth.

Oh yeah, comparable brands...Mandy Macs are a one size fitted, any Tots Bots nappy (they come in cotton, bamboo or microfibre), cute tooshies I think are one size too...

I like the BBs too. The covers fit Natalie well - we've never had a blow-out.

I find the hemp is a tad scratchy for us (although I did have the earlier hemp version, the hemp is softer now I think).

I think it must be... I don't notice too much of a difference in the feel of the fabric... But I like the bamboo because of the colours Although its a major design flaw having these lovely coloured nappies and boring white covers LOL!

I think they've recently introduced coloured PUL covers too Amy! I thought the white covers was so boring also.

I love the Baby Beehinds Bamboo ... they're so absorbent, so great for nights, especially now that Jambin's sleeping through. I do also often pop him in one without a cover, if we're just around the house. I can feel when it's damp and change it straight away. I don't use them alot for outings, because they are quite bulky under clothes when combined with a cover, but that's just personal preference, and I might change my mind once Jambin's older and they're not so bulky in relation to his size IYKWIM.
So yeah - a great, well made, reliable, absorbent nappy.

Is there any reason why you would buy hemp rather than bamboo? People seem to talk about using bamboo for nights - what do you use during the day?

Love them! Will be buying more I've got hemp & bamboo. Our hemp ones get a bit scratchy too, but they're ok (they soften up and get nice & stretchy if you do a few minutes in the drier )

Ezz - bamboo take longer to dry, so I like having hemp on hand for that reason. But bamboo are fantastic night nappies - I don't have to boost them. I tend to boost the hemp ones for night time.

But I'll also say, I hated BBH for the first 5 months. LOL. They were just too big & bulky, even tho he was past the 4kg weight. I hated the frilly bits around the legs etc etc. But then they suddenly fit him really well, and I just love them!

Im looking into the BBH too....theres to many other nappies to choose from and these sound the best to me. I get confused with hamp and bamboo and wat ones are for night/day, wat ones need coveres and dont... and the diff types!

Kim, you could use either hemp or bamboo for night or day - totally up to you. As others have said, the bamboo is slightly more absorbent, so lots of people use that for the night nappy because you need them to last the distance, KWIM? All the BBs need covers if you want them to be 'waterproof' on the outside.
Ah, I'd heard rumours of the coloured covers, but that they were still 'testing' them. Bring them on! LOL

sorry to brag i got a bbh pul cover (pink) on wednesday and its awsome will be getting some more this wednesday!!

Ok, just to go against the general love for BBH's.
I wasn't that fussed about them. I found the fit to be too low in the rise so Isla had a bum crack showing. They don't have any stay dry liner so you have to add that. I also found the covers (both the wool & PUL) to be a bad fit also, the touch tape /velcro stuff would stratch Isla's tummy.

The one thing to remember is that each baby is different & while over all the BBH nappies are good in their ways, they just didn't suit us. So as with all MCN, only get 1 or 2 to see how you like them before buying up big.

I have 3 mandy macs that I like a fiar bit. They seem a bit narrow but sofar that hasn't effected the ability to contain Isla's poo (still mostly runny BF poo's). I also like the Nappy chappy fitted nappies & The WildChild ones.

My boy is only 6 weeks old and I agree that the BBH bamboos I have are still a bit bulky. I prefer my Bumgenius's. Also I like the fact that the Bumgenius's have a microsuede inner that wicks the moisture away from his bum, so no nappy rash!

I'm with FionaJill on this one.
I had 5 BBB and 1 BBH (old style) and although the fit was great and flexible with my DD's rapid growth in the early months I found that she hated the feeling of wet BB next to her skin and would wake up crying in the middle of the night, not to mention complaining every time she weed during the day. We tried all the wicking liners etc etc but she still complained in BB's and I had no problems with other MCNs that had something nice and wicky next to her skin.

The other thing that drove me batty was how long they took to dry.

Friend of mine bought the deluxe pack for her baby just before she was born and I think she regrets it now. Her baby has almost constant nappy rash and I suspect it is because she is sitting in a wet nappy much of the time.

I've now lent mine to someone else and am not missing them from my stash one bit. There are much better alternatives around in my view.

The coloured covers have been available for a while now. I got these when I bought my package back in May I think it was, or April.

It's interesting seeing some comments on Baby BeeHinds.

I disagree with all the negative comments hahahaha.

I think that if your babies butt crack is showing, then you haven't placed the nappy high enough at the back.
As for nappy rash, my daughter is nearly 13 weeks and we have been using the BBH's since about 6 weeks and she hasn't had nappy rash once. We use a microfleece liner as well as Cornstarch to help keep her dry..............and she is a super soaker during the first half of the day.

We also have had no problems with the covers.

IMO, it's all user trial and error, for example, if a poo was to seriously leak down the leg, then you haven't put them on firm enough (you need to have them high enough at the back to make them firm around the legs.

I bought the Full-Time package prior to giving birth and I haven't looked back. I absolutely love BBH's bamboo nappies

If you don't like the 'frills' around the legs, you can turn the frills in. This is what they recommend for ULTIMATE LEAK PROTECTION.

And just to comment on drying times. Yesterday was a nice sunny day. I had them out on the clothes horse from 9.30am and brought them in at 4.15pm because I was worried about rain and they were practically dry. They just needed say an hour under the ceiling fan to finish them off.

When it's not sunny, I hang them under the ceiling fan and they take about 24 hours. I never find this a problem, I wash every second day and never ever run short.

You are much more patient and probably more organised than I am then... if I hang outside at 9.30am most of my pockets are dry by 1-2pm on a sunny day. BBB used to take about 36 hours by comparison. That could be Canberra for you too.

It might also depend on how many you have Kar. The more nappies I get, the less drying time becomes an issue for me! So if AmyBaby got the full time package, there's less worry to get things dry super quick. Depends on where people live too, those sunny Queenslanders seem to have much less trouble with their nappy drying! And I've got an undercover clothesline, so not many issues for me either.
