Hi expert MCN ladies!
I am trying to be very organised before bubs gets here and am getting all my nappy stores now.
I originally bought a box of huggies newborn disposables for hospital and the first week or so but I want to use cloth.
I have ordered some baby beehind hemp on line : 12 onesize nappies, 4 PUL covers, 2 wool covers, 12 microfleece liners and 2 boosters.
I also have about 8 coloured flat oldfashioned cotton nappies.
What else will I need for full time cloth in a not very warm winter climate? Summer drying should be fine and we do have a dryer.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge!
I used 36 cloth nappies as you need to soak them and dry them so you need enough to go around plus a few spare so you will need a about two good size buckets with lids ( you can get them from bunnings) one for the dirty naps and one for soaking. stick with the white ones so that you can bleech them back to white, as they will stain. I used the coloured one a spew cloths as I had a spewy baby. always have a few disposables ready as if you have a bad night and have had to chage the bed sheets a few times due to leaks then its always nice to know you have back up that shouldnt leak..
plus if you have a baby girl she will always use them for her dolls in the future.
Sounds like you have a good stash going there. I would add some quick drying MCN like pockets or quick drying fitteds if you want to stick with fitteds like Nap Naps, sugar peas or Itti bitti boos as BBH can take a while to dry even in warm weather. I also have two nappy buckets, one in the nursery with cold water in it for the wee nappies and one outside the toilet with cold water and a tiny bit of purity in it for the pooey ones so they don't stain. Have you got one of thse little clothes racks they are good too
To start out I have 12 white cloth squares and 5 MCN and I had to wash every night. I now have about oh 2 or so, I've just given away quite a few small and mediums so have to build up my stash again. and I wash every 2-3 days.
Well, I dry pail, not soak. The thing with BBH is that if bub is small, they might take a couple of weeks to fit. No worries, since they'll probably fit til TT!
I'm going to use prefolds for mine, relatively cheap, with less folding. And I'm thinking of getting some more tots bots fitteds too, ones that do up with a snappi. Maybe even some tots bots covers, they have gussets (a bit at the legs) which means they really shouldn't leak!
I didn't find summer drying a prob, a clotheshorse and fan overnight usually worked. And you do have the dryer as a backup.
You can use BBH's on a newborn, just depends on the size of your baby and the size of his/her legs.
We used disposables for about the first 5 or 6 weeks I think it was. Then changed over to our BBH's and have been using them ever since (bub is now 15 weeks).
For us, we bought the 25 bulk pack. That does us enough to only have to wash every 2nd day and not require disposables or anything else as backup.
They can take a while to dry, but if you have a dryer, then you really have no concerns, same if you have warm weather. We even dry them under our ceiling fan with no probs.
It is recommended that you dry pail with BBH too. If you do choose to soak though, you should only use water, no bleaching agents etc. as this will damage the nappies. If your nappies stain from the poo, then simply hang them outside in the sun to dry after washing them and the sun acts a natural bleach. It's amazing to see the poo marks just disappear!!!
So just buy one nappy bucket. I would even recommend buying a Little Squirt for your toilet, as it makes getting poo off the liners and nappy alot easier.
Hmm ok thanks. I was thinking of getting a bigger pack but thought "what if I dont like them?" so only got 12. I didnt know if I liked the idea of pockets cause even though you change the wadding the layer next to the skin still has wee on it. Do you wash the outer everytime too? I have seen Almost in ones which are like a cover with wadding layed inside and if it doesnt move around too much I think they would be ok... will have to investigate more. I really dont want to have to buy lots of different sizes which is why I like the BBH.
Thanks for your input girls
Sazz, you change the shell of the pocket nappy every time too, the thing people like about pocket nappies is that you can adjust the absorbency to suit how your baby wets, and because the stuffing comes out, they dry quicker! I used BumGenius One size pockets on River from birth, they were the only ones that didn't leak his nb poos out, they were our shopping nappy! They can be hard to come by these days, think you can pre-order them from some places, like Nurture Nappies.
Good idea about the bbh, you can always buy more if you decide you really like them. I didn't start to love my BBH til Riv was a little older though, just liked them at the start.
Isnt it the weirdest thing how excited everyone gets about MCN? I havent even used one yet and have spent hours looking for and thinking about them!! I will look into those bubgenius ones as the leaky BF poos talk is starting to scare me lol...
coloured terries are fine. you shouldn't need to bleach, the sun will do it - a little napisan babycare if necessary. I'd get another half dozen flat terries, or 6 more mcn's. AIO's are good for goign out.
I would agree not to buy too many before you try a brand. some brands jus don't suit some babies.
I have some motherease fitteds which contain poo very wel, especially when combined with their great rikki covers. Sadly though I have to sell them as the snaps are aggravating a childhood wrist problem. anyone want some 2nd hand nappies????
Nicole, are they one size? If so, I would be interested... how many do you have? and what kind of covers are suitable?
I have ordered 3 bumgenius pockets (even dared to get one pink one cause everyone says it will be a girl) I am not sure how good flats are when bubs are a bit bigger... are they absorbent enough when not folded small like newborns? I guess they are still ok for daytime at home.
I'm still going to use my terry flats (I have about 30 that I used for DD) at home and I have brought PUL covers to use with these (x2 tots bots and x2 BBH). I've also stocked up on some pocket nappies (I have x4 pea pods which I brought second hand and I also got x2 baby kangas last week because they were on sale). I have x3 Mandy Mac fitteds which I also brought second hand.
I am going to get some BBH fitteds for night time use once bub arrives and is a little older and am also planning on getting some BumG pockets once bub arrives (I'm not brave enough to order pink or blue like you - most people think I'm having a boy but I'm far from convinced!! )
I thought it was best to try a few different types before I brought too many and some I want to wait until bub is here so I can buy gender specific colours and prints etc.
The terry flats will be used at home to get me through in the mean time.
I know what you mean about getting excited - once you start you can't stop!!
Wow Willow, not long now... exciting! Did you find your terry flats absorbent enough when not folded so small (when bubs is bigger?) and what fold did you like? Do you like snappys? Enjoy your mat. leave rest time!!!
